Professional Association Membership Professional nursing organizations, such as the American Nurses Association (ANA), are dedicated to supporting the field of nursing and advocating for nurses all across America. The ANA is committed to recognizing and advocating on important issues that impact nurses. Some of the issues that the ANA advocates for include safe work environments, better pay, better benefits, and better nurse-patient ratios. The ANA represents approximately 4 million nurses as they work to empower them, support them, and protect them. Furthermore, membership in the ANA is not limited strictly to individuals.

Nurse Practitioner are registered Nurses who serve as primary and specialty health care providers under a physician. Much like a geriatrician, Gerontological Nurse Practitioners work with elderly patients, diagnosing illness, conducting exams, and prescribing medication. (“Geriatric Nurse…”). These type of nurses work at nursing homes, with home healthcare services and in hospice facilities, or run your own private practice. A geriatric nurse work with finding illnesses and diseases, prescribing medication and therapy, routine check-ups and screenings, etc…etc.

My passion for nursing practice defies description; leading to the reason I am opting to pursue a higher level of education in nursing. The George Washington University School of nursing has one of the highly ranked master’s programs in the country, which offers a competitive curriculum and highly defined leadership skills that integrates technology into learning. It is therefore my desire to pursue an advance education at this facility because it prepares practitioners to become great clinicians ready to solve real-world clinical problems. Moreover, the opportunity to pursue a degree in this facility will afford me the ability to be a competent and highly efficient family nurse practitioner; that will serve the community and mostly the underserved. I am the last child in a family of eight that has aspired to pursue my education at the graduate level.

The value of inter- and interprofessional collaborative practice as a DNP nurse and how it may impact my role. With the healthcare transformation occurring around the world, a partnership relationship between a doctor of nursing practice and doctor of philosophy-prepared nurses continues to develop. According to Ford, (2009), doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) plays an important role to play in the always changing health care system. According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the United States, nursing has the largest number of health care workers. With the current growth in health care, Advance practice nurses (APNs) will be taking up leadership roles, collaborating with other health care professionals to improve health care access and promote quality care.

The world today as we know it is developing constantly and changing frequently. Healthcare is evolving, and practices are expanding. Nurses like myself are continually seeking education and desire to practice at the most advanced level. Doctorally prepared nurses have become more well known, and have increased the scope of practice for advanced practice nurses in an extremely positive way. Doctorally prepared nurses are known as Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) and are often notable for being high quality and cost-effective health care providers.

Many nurses do not get involved in health care policy even though the nurse should. Most nurses do not know much about health care policies, some view it as “foreign and complex” (Falk, 2014, p. 203). I consider myself one of the nurses that do not know much about health care policy and I am one of the nurses that do not get involved in health care policy. I do not get involved with health care policy because I was never taught about it, so I do not want to get involved in something that I do not know much about. I look forward to learn more about health policies and becoming more involved in health policies.

The professional nursing values I believe are things you can be taught and some you cannot. Nurses are special individuals who ultimately want to care for and help others as much as they can. I agree with all of these values and believe some I will need to work on myself such as competence, illness prevention and patient education. Others I believe I have based on my experience I have already had while caring for others. Some of the qualities I believe I have include: caring, compassion, dependability, empathy, focusing on the patient- defining quality of life, having a holistic patient centered care, kindness, openness to learning, respect for others their dignity and worth and sensitivity.

My Personal Philosophy and Values of Nursing Nursing is proving care, support, and serve people who are in need. The purpose of nursing is to improve patient 's health condition to a better life. The school of nursing also stands out as a national leader when it comes to education of health professionals. I am very eager to start my experience as a Rutgers Undergraduate and I believe that it’s well known academic curricula of the baccalaureate-nursing program would be consistent with what I have learned so far. Not only do I feel that being accepted into the program would prepare me to become a nurse who is prepared to provide quality health care needs of the diverse population, but will also give me the local, national and international leadership skills for great health care

Christian nurses are given the unique ability to provide compassionate and spiritual care to a variety of patients. The purpose of this paper is to explain my definition of nursing as a caring art, describe how Christian faith impacts caring, describe my personal philosophy of nursing while identifying my own personal values and beliefs, and discus how my beliefs impact my nursing practice. To me, nursing as an art of caring, is defined as caring for the whole person, building meaningful relationships, and providing compassionate care. Holistic nursing care involves healing a person physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I believe the art of nursing is embedded in the steps we take to address problems that are not simply physical.

What is reflection? Reflection is described as the process individuals use for self-development in their future career. The process of reflection has been used for many years in professional health fields such as midwifery and nursing (Lillyman. S & Merrix. P, 2012). Florence nightingale pioneered the practice known as reflection-on-practice, this is a tool that is needed in developing improvement and knowledge to enable an individual to grow in their nursing profession.

What does nursing mean to me? Nursing means helping people heal, meeting their needs while they are in your care, listening to concerns, protecting them from harm, and educating them how to care for themselves while treating them with dignity, compassion and respect. Nursing is giving of yourself to the care of people and community, while expecting nothing in return. It is having compassion for people and their health, being a humanitarian, and making sure patients receive the best care possible. Nurses must also deal with families of patients with gentleness and kindness, realizing they are going through a stressful situation also.

During these past weeks at the Archbold ER, I had the opportunity to put into practice many of the content learned in class. This included but was not limited to the proper placement of a Foley catheter using sterile techniques, insertion of an NG tube, and assessment of patients. Even though I attempted to complete some of my initial goals for this internship, I noticed that I couldn’t complete a few of them due to lack of time and lack of experience in the field. Therefore, some of my goals that I’ll need to address during the following three weeks include improve my assessment skills, have better communication with my patients, and improve my questioning to get a better understanding of the cause that brought them in.
