It is essential that stress is managed to avoid negative stress responses such as loss of appetite, suppression of the immune system, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation (Halter, 2014, p. 166-172). To manage stress, there are several stress reduction techniques that can be used. One of them is the use of relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), meditation, and guided imagery (Halter, 2014, p. 172-175). When she is stressed, she cleans the house, arranges her closet, or does the laundry in order to distract herself. The student nurse assessed also her husband’s coping style, and it was the use of humor. He laughs out the problems and turns a negative or bad situation into a positive one. In addition, both have agreed that physical exercise, specifically going to the gym to exercise, is the coping style they wanted to use in order to reduce stress and to have a healthier lifestyle. Burnout and stress can happen to any individual within any organization but if I were in charge of socializing the newly hired nurses at the local hospital I would ensure that the new nurses went through new hire orientation by knowing what the hospital stands for, mission, and expectations. I would expect them to adhere to our values and the importance of patient care and the services we provide. I would have to make certain they are qualified and right fit for the job and hospital. Ongoing training is most important and would be provided from beginning and throughout the nurse’s career. Since burnout is the underlying issue, stress counseling or various forms of relaxation methods are needed to cope with this condition.
For example, the results of the study Memarbashy et al. (2011) showed that the relationship between task -oriented coping strategy and staff health was positive and significant (13). A study by Soleimannejad et al. (2012) also showed that there is a significant and inverse relation between coping styles and mental health (15). Generally, the identification of effective forms of coping as a mediating variable in relation of stress-disease is the forefront of research in this area (16) and regarding the importance of nurses ' health in providing care to patients, conducting research on stress and coping strategies is required.
