History Report My job shadow is a certified nursing assistant (CNA). Nurse aide jobs were first established during World War I due to the surplus of injured soldiers. Since there was a lack of trained nurses, there was a desperate need for volunteered assistance to treat soldiers. The Red Cross began the program called Volunteer Nurses’ Aide Service which increased the amount of assistance for nurses to help hurt soldiers. The program was implemented again during World War II. This time about 12,000 people volunteered as nursing assistants. At first, nursing assistants did not have formal training or certification. In 1987, the Omnibus Reconciliation Act (OBRA) was passed by Ronald Reagan to certify the standards for nurse assistant training, requirements, and education. It was pushed mainly for the lack of care for patients in nursing homes across America. Congress wanted to make sure that high standards of care were given to patients. Through this act, it greatly changed the field for nurse aides. …show more content…
It mainly originated from America and possibly other European countries who also needed nursing assistance during World War I and II. Due to the substantial amount of casualties from the 20th century wars, nursing aides were heavily depended on. This catalyzed the step for CNAs to be a part of the hospital and aide nurses with patients. Afterwards, nursing assistants flourished across the world. CNAs have become an integral part of the hospital community and environment. For example, currently, there is a global organization named National Network of Career Nursing Assistants that is a non-profit group that provides support, research, and education for career nurse assistants. This clearly exemplifies the progress nursing aides have made in hospitals and nursing homes around the

According to ANA's 1917 Certificate of Incorporation, two of the purposes of the organization are "...to promote the professional and educational advancement of nurses in every proper way; to elevate the standard of nursing education..." The association, however, did not take any significant action in this area until the 1960's when the association made a definitive statement on nursing education, A Position Paper on Educational Preparation for Nurse Practitioners and Assistants to Nurses. ANA's Committee on Education proposed the establishment of an autonomous commission which would design and spearhead a comprehensive study regarding the results of the consultant group. Both the American Nurses Association and the National League for Nursing
In 1942, a large number of nurses worked in medical centres in the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Young nurses treated gunshot wounds for the very first time. Nurses treating soldiers were in constant danger of enemy forces.
Initially the perception of nurses working by the Army was negative. “Women working in army hospitals are objects of continual evil and have a very uncertain, semi-legal position, with poor wages and little sympathy” (Robertson, 2012). Doctors and physicians described nurses as “old hags” who surround the army surgeon. Army nurses did not always have the most experience, but they saw what needed improvement and sometimes challenged the surgeons and hospital staff regarding what they viewed as cruel treatment of soldiers (Robertson, 2012). Ever since the beginning of nursing, one of the most important aspects of nursing is being a patient advocate.
The workforce in most industrialized countries is aging and becoming more age-diverse. And immigrant workers play a large and important role in our economy and society. As child-care providers, food preparation workers, home health care aides, software programmers and construction workers, these workers constitute a significant labor force and provide services that millions more workers depend upon. Currently, I am working with a significant shortage of certified nursing assistants (CNAs) in our CCRC communities.
It 's true, not everyone is fit to be a CNA. Being able to care for the elderly and bring happiness to their day, brings happiness to my day. The special calling to bring others joy, is extraordinarily rewarding. As a Certified Nursing Assistant you provide in the basic care and safety to patients as well as assist them with activities of daily living. Daily duties are given to CNA’s by the supervising RN, often referred to as Charge Nurse.
During the 1960s and 1970s, blacks were fighting for equality and against racism and discrimination. Nursing was no different. Black nurses were fighting for equality and access to membership into the American Nurses Association (ANA). When the ANA granted membership access to black nurses, they felt that the health care needs of black people were not being adequately addressed by ANA. So, therefore causing black nurses to establish their own organization.

As a senior nursing student, I am preparing to utilize the knowledge I have learned and the skills practiced to become a professional and excellent nurse. Safe, compassionate, quality care is a standard that I will be incorporating in my practice. Northwestern Memorial Hospital displays these goals, standing behind excellent nursing practice, as well as making an environment that encourages the highest standards in care. Excellent nursing practice is not an individual accomplishment, it is a team effort that requires collaboration and respect amongst healthcare providers. I believe Northwestern promotes team nursing that is dedicated to patient-centered care, while achieving positive health outcomes.
The movement of suffrage and feminism helped expand and validate nursing as a woman’s profession. After the Nineteenth Amendment was passed women were allowed to vote as well as own their own property. It also allowed young female to become emancipated if they were recruited into the military during WWI. Florence Nightingale believed that every woman is a nurse (Malka,2007). That statement helped bring women out of being just “homemakers” and helped them turn into respected professionals.
I actually worked as a CNA while I was going to college because I knew I wanted to be a nurse, and so that kind of a job made sense, and then of course probably helped me get into nursing school because I had some perspective on what nurses really do. Anyway, I worked as a CNA in a nursing home. Lots of CNA jobs are actually in nursing homes, and even though it wasn't the setting I thought I wanted, it ended up being what introduced me to hospice. Working at the nursing home, it wasn't uncommon to have residents convert to hospice care plans. Not everyone does it, I think there's this instinct we all have to fight against the idea of death.
