Establishing Professional Presence to Promote a Healthy Work Environment As nurses, we exemplify authentic leadership by not only providing high-quality care to our patients, but also by ensuring that we work in a healthy and joyful environment. To successfully achieve this, authentic leaders exhibit professionalism and a positive social presence. They promote mindfulness and a culture of joy in the workplace. And most importantly, they are equipped with social and emotional

Nurses can promote mindfulness in the healthcare setting through interpersonal communication. By employing our active listening skills when we are communicating with our colleagues and patients, we show that we are physically and mentally present for them. We express caring and compassion by conveying that we genuinely care about what they have to say. This then helps build mutual trust and respect within the team. Social awareness is also another way to display mindfulness in the workplace. Being socially aware involves displaying empathy and taking the perspective of others. By putting ourselves in other people’s shoes and being open-minded and sensitive to the feelings and experiences of others, we can further enhance our mindful awareness and responsiveness as …show more content…
It is important to promote honesty and open communication in this step. Thus, I would implement it by conducting an anonymous online survey in which staff members can answer open-ended questions about the sources of joy and pride in their work. I will also use the strategy of sharing the overall findings with everyone through an email or an announcement during unit huddle. Through this, we can identify the strengths and successes that we can further build upon as a
Delegation Paper Breanna Lake Department of Nursing, Davenport University NURS433: Nurse Manager and Leader Professor Debbie Bosworth February 17, 2023 Delegation Paper Introduction For my leadership experience, I spent seven weeks on a medical-surgical unit in Hastings, Michigan. I worked alongside my nurse preceptor on night shift, and as the clinical experience unfolded, I learned numerous new skills and gained knowledge that will be extremely beneficial moving forward in my nursing career. I evaluated the hospital’s mission statement, the leadership and communication styles among team members, and I evaluated how my skills and leadership style evolved over the course of the clinical rotation. General Information
In the past decade or so, increasing numbers of hospitals and academic programs in the United States and other parts of the world, have begun to use Watson’s Theory of Human Caring in very specific ways. Watson’s theory can serve as a guide to changing nursing practice. It can change the culture of hospital nursing and academic nursing (Watson, 2009). Watson’s caring theory can be incorporated into many current nursing interventions. Some of them would include active listening, preventing falls, preventing illness, controlling pain, promoting self-care, and restoring health.
HCIS 725 Leadership in Healthcare Practice Kirsten Blatchford Contrasting Leadership Models Leadership models are developing to adapt to the changing needs of people and the surrounding environment (Dye, 2017). It is important for leaders to be flexible and take part in change to guide their teams and organizations to success. Over time, the theories of leadership have grown and taken different forms. The great man theory and trait theory were the initial concepts used to explain leadership. Situational leadership theories and transactional theories then emerged to help shape our understanding of leadership.
Schwartz goes on to explain how the industry arrived at its current structure and the driving force behind it. He then provides actionable measures organizations can take to improve the overall quality of life and work for employees. He presents his opinion and anecdotal information, and backs it up with studies. The study conducted by Professor Amy Wrzesniewski on hospital custodians, is one of several studies she has conducted. “Her research explores how people make meaning of their work, with a focus on the impact meaning has on employees and the organizations in which they work.”
Work with an awareness of your own limitations in self and social awareness. A. Social awareness gives you the ability to understand and respond to the needs of others, understanding the other person’s emotions, needs and their concerns. Understanding the politics within an organisation and how these affect the people working around us. It's the ability to understand and meet the needs of patients and co-workers. Awareness of social situations means you carefully consider what other people want, and taking their situation and needs into account
In the medical office setting I can help create a positive organizational climate. When it isn’t positive I have the tools to help change it. When forming work teams I can make sure I have the same goals and values. I can ensure the teams I’m forming have the same goals and values as well. I can look for the kinds of games people play and decide not to play them.
Professional Presence and Influence of the Advanced Nurse Jessica L. Sookram College of Health Professions, Western Governors University D024: Professional Presence and Influence Michele L. Miller, EdD. MSN, RN March 14, 2023 Professional Presence and Influence of the Advanced Nurse The practice of nursing is an art that combines science and compassion to provide excellent patient care. A nursing team that provides this level of care typically has a well-rounded nurse leader that guides them through difficult situations. Leaders need to frequently practice their social and emotional intelligence (SEI) power skills in order to manage complex situations at work and lead their team to success. Along with fine-tuning their skills, effective
Health is viewed as a part of the whole, is variable and teeters between synchronization and disagreement. Nurses depend on theories and models to promote healing, well-being, and mindfulness when providing care for individuals and interacting with
The authentic style of leadership is defined as “building honest relationships by remaining true to personal values and honoring all relationships” (Barnett, 2023 [PowerPoint slides]). Nurse Cantrell does this by leaving her office door open and having an open door policy, allowing any staff to come to her for help any time she is in her office or around the unit. This fosters a trusting relationship between the staff and herself. She also intentionally checks in on her team regularly and seeks out their feedback. This displays the skill of actively listening and valuing the input of others which supports relationships within the
In addition, employees who experience more positive emotions at work make greater contributions to organizational effectiveness and, when people are in a good mood, they are more sociable, less aggressive, and better able to recall positive information (Pinder, 1998). Also, those employees who are more positive possess higher confidence, optimism, self-efficacy, likability, and sociability, which in turn, making them more satisfied with their job and increases workplace achievement (Lyubormirsky, King, & Diner, 2005). Happy employees bring their happiness from the office to their home and they also transfer their happiness from their home to the office (Lyubormirsky et. al,
These factors provide guidelines for nurse-patient relationship, and the goal of nursing to help persons attain a higher level of harmony within the mind-body-spirit, healing and health. The 10 caritas processes include the practice of loving kindness, equanimity, and belief system for oneself and other. She promotes cultivation one’s world spiritual practices, self-awareness, authentic relationship with the patient, and support patient’s expression of feelings. In addition, she encourage to creatively use the nursing knowledge as part of the caring process, engage in genuine teaching-learning experience, and create a healing environment at all levels. Watson believes that the nurse’s assistance with patient’s basic needs potentiate alignment of the mind-body-spirit.
According to Bramhall (2014), Effective communication one of the basic skills of nursing staff, which enhances patient care. Add to this the communication plays an important role in showing empathy and thus it becomes easy for the patient to report positive experiences or even the bad ones. I think that the most important things are to communicate not only with the patient but also with healthcare team members. In addition, nurses need to be able to communicate successfully with all member of the health care providers and to provide and give the full information about the patient
They are able to connect, communicate and coordinate across multiple departments, professional opinions and voices, and the daily schedules of patients. Advocating and designing care with the patient and family is a true skills set and cultural attribute that adds tremendously to a culture of safety and patient – centeredness but requires the most able leadership to build these bridges across the many professionals engaged in care. Building this culture is a leadership challenge and there is no one in my experience better able to make these changes than nursing leaders ( Maureen Bisognano, 2009). Nurses should not just be at the bedside or within the nursing community but must be involved as leaders and decision – makers throughout the healthcare system. As Maureen Bisognano (2009) points out, the best nurses are accomplished envoys among different players and interests involved in direct patient care, which is a skill needed throughout organizations and businesses, not just in hospitals or
According to Maetrix.com (2014), a high social awareness score means I understand others and take an active interest in their concerns, organizational awareness, and can navigate politics. In my current employment role I need to be able to understand where the applicants are coming from and show that I care about what interests and concerns them. I understand organizations and can navigate organizational politics in order to keep my work in line with the organizations
One of the ways I can be social is by knowing a lot of people with whom I can communicate. It can also help me gain more knowledge from others and appreciate other points of view. By knowing people in my math class, I can talk with individuals asking if they need any help and
