Nonviolent Social Movements: The Civil Rights Movement

The Civil Rights Movement is known as a 1950s-1970s era but has been ongoing throughout the history of the United States. The Movement started once the first African-American slaves rebelled against their owners. These crusades continue as all groups fight for equal rights. However, without one particular group, the Civil Rights Movement would be an unjust battle for American liberties. The Supreme Court is the most powerful entity in the Civil Rights Movement with the national authority of the Constitution, for the Court had the necessary power to spare and the state governments were overshadowed by the federal government.

(Roark, P. 924) What set civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s apart from earlier acts of black protest was its widespread presence in the South, with a large number of people involved, their willingness to confront the white institutions directly and the use of non-violent protests and civil disobedience to bring about change. The arrest of Rosa Parks in December 1955 is probably the most famous example of this. The African Americans boycotted the bus system in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Montgomery bus boycott lasted a full year. (Roark, p. 924) These were good tactics.

The Civil Rights Movement began around 1942-1968. The main goal and focus of The Civil Rights movement was the elimination of segregation and for all African Americans to have equal rights and the same opportunities (Gates Jr.). Important leaders that were involved in this movement included individuals such as Dr.King, Malcolm X, and Rosa Parks who all made a huge impact in the movement (Janken). During The Civil Rights Movement many African Americans were mistreated in various ways. For example many civic leaders and general citizens were beaten by police officers for simply trying to vote.

During 1954 to 1968, African Americans and whites alike were fighting for the rights of African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement. Throughout America, protesters used different tactics to earn their freedom. Some used violence, while others chose a non-violent path. Non-violence overall was more effective than violence during the Civil Rights Movement. Furthermore, bus boycotts are an efficient strategy that was used in the 1950s to 60s.

America has long been considered “the land of the free”, illustrated in many historic documents from around the time our country was born. The Declaration of Independence of 1776 immediately showed that freedom, as we declared ourselves independent of Britain’s rule. A little over a decade later, in 1787, the Constitution was created, after the failed attempt of the Articles of Confederation. The Constitution initiated the setup of America’s government during the Constitutional Convention, in which George Washington was selected as the first president of the United States. Another four years later, in 1791, the Bill of Rights was adopted as part of the Constitution, giving Americans their basic freedoms that are very much debated about today.

In general, the non-violent protests orchestrated by Dr. Martin Luther King and other successful black political leaders were viewed as a success as the mistreatment of African Americans had improved. However, racism is viewed as deeply rooted and it was going away overnight or years to come. The whites were still finding ways in the law to discriminate against African Americans and believe the non-violent protest didn’t benefit them so, this sector of the African Americans led to existence of black power. In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law. Therefore, this new law outlawed segregation in public accommodations of every of every kind throughout the country (Robin D. G. Kelley, 2000, p. 236).

The civil rights movement was a movement that was started to go against segregation. During the civil rights movement there was multiple marches, protest, and many other things that individual or groups of people did to try and get equal rights for African Americans. One of the types of protest is called a sit-in. The sit-ins were mainly started by 4 african american students at a Greensboro lunch counter. At first the four students just wanted some lunch but when they went to go order they refused to serve them.

I learned a lot about the Civil Rights Movements. I chose to research the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) because I am a student; I hoped it would help me to understand how people my age were feeling during the 1960’s. The SNCC was active from 1960 – 1966. I learned that many other groups and people were working towards public awareness and racial equality. The movie clips that I got to watch showed how violent the protests were.

The civil rights movement was a non-violent protest to renew black rights. Great Leaders fought in peace with people without using their fists. History.com states, “Nearly 100 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, African Americans in Southern states still inhabited a starkly unequal world of disenfranchisement, segregation and various forms of oppression, including race-inspired violence.” First, racial segregation in the South made it hard for African Americans to live and or do much of anything in white communities. In 1955 racial segregation continued in the Southern region of America.

Introduction: There are many social movements that happen changed the society. For example feminist movement, civil rights movement, Arab spring movement, children rights movement, ect. In this paper I choose to write about civil rights movement, which it is one of the most important movements that happened. It led to transforming of all aspect of social, political, and cultural American life.

Introduction The story of the Civil Rights Movements of African Americans in America is an important story that many people knew, especially because of the leadership Martin Luther King Jr. Black people in America, between 1945 and 1970 had to fight for rights because they had been segregated by white people, they didn’t have equal laws compared to white people. In the early fifties there was a large non-violent integration based movement spearheaded by figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. However, as the time progressed, the movement started seeing a more aggressive leadership with figures such as Malcolm X, but eventually it turned into an extremist movement

This time in history was known as the Civil Rights Movement, a movement from 1954-1954, in which people fought against racism. Although the Civil Rights Movement mainly affected African Americans, but involved all of American society. Because most racism against ancient African Americans took place in southern United States, civil rights was extremely important to African Americans who lived in the south. Racism was so widely spread it even found its way into professional sports.
