Never in the recorded history of all mankind has there been a larger mass murder and persecution than the holocaust. Elie Wiesel was a holocaust survivor, author, and nobel prize winner, and wrote the book, “Night” chronicling his experiences during the holocaust. When Elie first arrives at Auschwitz he is stripped from his clothes and his former identity to work at the concentration camp. For about two years he struggled to stay alive under the intolerable conditions of the concentration camp. In the novel “Night” by Elie Wiesel, the character Ellie was effected by selfishness, loss of humanity, and the shift in their belief in God.

Elie’s perceived losses are actually his gains. Elie’s deterioration and eventual loss of the relationship with his father seemed sorrowful at the time, but actually led to his survival. The Nazi’s would “dehumanize” the Jews by taking away their identities their belongings, and putting them in concentration camps. In order to control the Jews and force them into concentration camps, the Nazi’s would beat the Jews, threaten them, and use the fear of death against them.

Broken, imbruted, and barbaric are a few words that could be used to describe the effects the Holocaust had on its many victims. Though many Jews lost their humanity during the mas genocide that was the Holocaust, a man named Eliezer Wiesel refused. Throughout the novel Night, Elie recollects how even through such horrifying hardships he keeps his humanness. In Night, Elie’s rivetingly miraculous memoir of the Holocaust, Elie displays how easily the human soul is destroyed. Elie also shows that despite the fragility of human nature, its longevity can be increased through family, faith, and the will to live.

Survival is key. However, most people do not realize what one of the keys to survival is. One key to survival revolves around family and how family is always there for one another. They began to feel as if there was no point in life, and wanted to die. Elie too began to feel as if there was no point to life, “Death….It stuck to me like glue”, but did not die because of the relationship he had with his father,”My father’s presence….stopped me”(Wiesel, 86). Elie did not die because his love for his father kept him from leaving his father alone during the great terrors of this time. At this point in the novel Elie’s father was not the most liked man, and was repeatedly beaten.

When Elie’s dad is first introduced in the book, it is evident that he did not have a good relationship with Elie. Elie’s father does not seem to care for Elie and just about his duties for the town.
