SPM 140 Assignment #5 - Anthony Anzalone

The National Football League has a very rich history. There are many aspects of it that make it what it is today. Some of these aspects include the amount of teams in the league, the financial aspect both in terms of salary cap and media deals, and drug testing. The NFL was originally formed in 1920 in Canton, Ohio. There were originally ten teams in the league at the point of initial formation. Later that year four more teams were added to the league. “In 1920, ten football teams gathered in Canton, Ohio to create the American Professional Football
Association (APFA), now known as the National Football League (NFL). Four more teams joined the league later that year, rounding out the 14 Original Towns”

There are two conferences, the AFC and NFC, that have 16 teams each. The league is currently considering expansion teams in the future as well, although nothing has materialized with these plans yet.
The teams in the NFL have a restriction on how much money they can spend on their roster. This is called the salary cap. The NFL’s salary cap is a hard cap. “The NFL uses a hard cap, meaning that no team is allowed to exceed the cap limit for any reason” (Brooke, 2017). The amount of cap space each team has each year is determined by the value of all streams of revenue for the league. Each team must spend a minimum of 89% of their cap space each year.
The league itself must also spend at least 95% of the cap. Signing bonuses are used to persuade players to sign more back-heavy contracts. These bonuses provide guaranteed money to the player, whether or not they are on the team for the duration of their full contract. There are also many incentives players can earn. Most of these are performance-based and can be for achieving a certain number of statistics, team success, or a Pro Bowl appearance. Overall, the NFL has a good system for managing a team's financial status.

The NFL is not only a sport that grosses millions of dollars a year in this country, it has blossomed into an industry in and of itself. Due to this large amount of revenue, players are naturally compensated very well however, there are policies in place to regulate this money. This is where the salary cap comes into play. A salary cap is basically an agreement between the league and players that does not allow the league to pay a player more once they reach the maximum. The NFL uses a hard cap which means the cap limit cannot be exceeded no matter the reason.
Founded in 1920, the NFL is an independent association that now includes 32 distinctly owned professional football teams. With the teams, they each have their own name, logo, colors, and owns intellectual property. The 32 teams produce an annual season of football games that ultimately leads to the Super Bowl championship. All of the teams made their own arrangements for licensing their intellectual property and marketing trademark items. In 1963, the teams came to a collective agreement to form the National Football League Properties (NFLP) to license, develop, market the intellectual property of the teams.
In the book Crunching Numbers Jason and Vijay go over in detail the ins and outs of contracts. NFL contracts are the heart and soul of a team. This is how the team acquires top-notch talent within the budget of the salary cap. These contracts are complicated and take a dedicated team on both sides to come up with a deal that both parties feel comfortable with. The league has a Salary cap that teams are not allowed to go over in salaries for that year.
Until it does, player values may continue to rise at a startling rate. At this point, it will be impossible to eliminate much of the wage distribution among the MLB, but a salary cap could help limit how much a team can pay an individual player to prevent, even the thought of, one single player earning a billion dollars. Proponents of salary caps believe that since the most talented athletes command the highest salaries, a cap on salary spending prevents more
Pete Rozelle The NFL today consists of 32 teams, 2 conferences, and 4 divisions in each conference. In February, one team from each conference battle it out in the Super Bowl. But the NFL wasn’t always like this. In 1955, there were 12 teams.
The national football league has been a nonprofit organization for some time now, but they are looking to drop that label. The NFL makes a lot of money, and in their opinion the benefits to becoming profit outweighs the obvious thing that they will have to start paying
The article “3 Things to Know about the NFL’s New Drug Policy” by Tom Pelissero, is about the NFL’s new drug policy and some of the things that are included in it. This article includes many of the revised edits of the new drug policy and why it will be more orientated for the NFL. One of the big things that’s important is the fact that recreational drugs will be treated as a lesser to performance enhancements. This is one of the few things that I talked about in my second topic. That would be the main reasoning for why I chose this
The teams competing against each other were the Saint Paul Ideals and the Rock Island Independents. The first head to head games occurred a week later as the Dayton Triangles beat the Colombus Panhandlers. As the APFA evolved and gained more attention the team owners decided to replace Jim Thorpe as president of the APFA with Joe Carr owner of the Columbus Panhandlers and rebrand the APFA into the National Football League in 1922. While the APFA was growing in popularity it wasn’t everywhere yet, because of this in 1960 Lamar Hunt and Bud Adams created the AFL (American Football League), the AFL was created by seven businessmen from cities, hungary to form a football league. The AFL had football teams from Boston, Houston, Denver, Dallas, Oakland and Los angeles.
It is an invitation-only event and is generally used to evaluate the top prospects before the annual NFL Draft. The first NFL Combine was held in 1982 in Tampa, Florida. It was later held in New Orleans and Arizona before being permanently relocated to Indianapolis in 1987. When is the 2018 NFL Combine?
The NFL was determined to take over the AFL and keep the league intact. At first when the AFL was formed, nobody though that it would last (Fleming). Nonetheless, Lamar Hunt and the other owners had proved everyone wrong. The AFL was disbanded after that year, and the two leagues came
The league has a salary cap, which limits the amount of money that teams can spend on player salaries. This allows for more competitive balance within the league. The NFL is heavily involved in community service initiatives, including supporting youth football programs and charitable organizations. One of their biggest programs is the NFL play 60 program which
According to an article by Larry Weisman, “The salary cap (per team) for the coming season is $102.5 million, up $17 million from 2005 the cap was $52.4 1998” it’s close to doubled in only the past 8 years. “The NFL's salary cap for 2022 will be $208.2 million, a healthy increase from the previous, pandemic-impacted years. The cap is going up from $182.5 million, which was down by nearly $10 million from the 2020 season. Adding in benefits attached to the cap, teams will be allowed to have a total player cost of $284.367 million. Quarterbacks, of course, will have the highest franchise tag hit at $29.7 million.”
It could cost the NFL over 1 billion dollars in the next 65 years. Later, august 29 of 2013 another lawsuit had come to an end and it was another big victory in a Philadelphia US District Court House. The settlement was set for $765 million.
In the NFL a rookie salary cap needs to be implemented. A salary cap limits the amount of money an individual can earn. A rookie is a person’s first year in a specific category. So a rookie salary cap would limit the amount of money a rookie in pro sports could earn. This salary cap can bring many benefits to the the league.
Generally people think that the NFL should adjust the game, and its rules to increase player safety, statistics clearly show that too much adjusting has been done and the NFL is suffering because of it. Too many rules have been changed for player safety and the current changes being discussed, like getting rid of the kickoff, are going to far and the game is not like it was. Players sign contracts and are aware of the risks they put themselves at when playing the game of football at a professional level. Referees are throwing more flags and the NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, is handing out a record high of fines. These adjustments by the National Football League are going too far and some rule changes need to be reverted back to their previous rules.
