A major means of social interaction in the 21st century is social media with nearly two thirds of all Americans using it. As social media is extremely widespread it is bound to have its ups and downs. Those who see it in a positive light say it provides information and is an extremely simple way to connect the world. On the other hand, the negative side of social media, presents the cyber bullying, incivility and unreliable information. Ever since the first social media site sprouted in 1997, social media has grown exponentially. Along with this expansion the positive aspects as well as the negative aspects of social media have grown. The circulation of false information is a major problem on social media. “The Effect of Twitter Exposure on False Memory Formation,” written by Fenn, Kimberly M; Griffin, Nicholas R; Uitvlugt, Mitchell G; Ravizza, Susan M, presents the issue that the false information spreading on social media can affect people unfavorably as it leads to memory distortion. In addition, the article also states, “Social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter have increased drastically in popularity. However, information on these sites is not verified and may contain inaccuracies”(Fenn et al.). Since various sites have gained popularity many more people are using them and many more people are becoming susceptible to the information on the sites that are “not verified and may contain inaccuracies”(Fenn et al.). As sites grow in popularity the spread of information will accelerate and so will the growth of false information. On the other hand of this argument many measures are made to insure that false information does no run rampant. In the article, “ADDRESSING BEHAVIORS THAT LEAD TO SHARING FAKE NEWS,” written by Tsipursky, Gleb and Morford, Zachary, the authors start by stating the problem of false information on social media, but they then continue by providing a solution. An example of this would be how the younger generation of adults, rather than read or watch the news on television and newspaper they turn to social media as their source of information. This access of information for young adults is valuable and beneficial to them. In addition, users of social media claim that social media is an outlet for self-expression, self-presentation, and community building which experts verify as beneficial to mental health. This is simply another great aspect of social media on the long list of benefits that is greatly helpful to our society. Sadly some social media sites do include some negative aspects along with the positives. One of such is the distribution of false information, but many measures are taken to make it so the false information does not run rampant. The benefits of social media are limitless, but they are also unknown to many of the older generation. As children of the older generation, we as human beings should take responsibility and teach them the ways of social media. Not only will it benefit them it will for you as they will stop criticizing your use of social
