Throughout this piece there are twenty-one words that contribute to an underlying belief of this article, such as “social media,” “web,” “internet,” “forum,” and “post.” These words show that one of the focuses of this article is the form in which rumors are spread on the internet, as they are the terms that appear quite often. In addition, the context in which social media is presented can be identified through further examination. The repetition of words such as “gossip,” “commenters,” and “comments” sixteen times shows that not only is the author focusing on the internet platform, but also what negative things are being presented on these sites. Finally, the way in which this story paints social media can be determined by the use of a negative word choice sixteen times.

Through social media outlets like Facebook, users are able reconnect with long lost friends and family, small and large businesses alike are able to connect with customers and reach more consumers, easier, and faster than ever before. However, along with these benefits are the risks that this easy access and instant communication come with. As scripture states, “All things are lawful”, but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful”, but not all things build up” (1 Corinthians 10:23 ESV). From cyberbullies to predators, users of ages are not immune to the negative effects of social media.

In fact, according to an analysis done by Buzzfeed News, found that false news stories were actually getting more Facebook engagement by about 100 000 engagements than the real news stories (Silverman). While one may not see this is as an immediate problem, it can have far reaching consequences when considering the function of the media. One of the media’s roles is to inform citizens of items that concern them (McNair 19). However, once the public’s trust in the fourth estate falters, this function of the media is severely impeded. This can have a great impact on society as vital information that they may need in their daily lives becomes mistrusted and ultimately

Social media is a new and impressive tool in today’s world. It helps individuals communicate with each other online and it can also help the law enforcement agencies with evidence surrounding criminal investigations. By recognizing the induction and deductions of certain articles or sites, they will give overall better understandings of certain topics such as criminal acts. After reading Robert D. Stuart (2013) “Social media: establishing criteria for law enforcement”, it can be concluded that the impacts of social media are leaving the world filled with bias but, also providing various sources of information at the same time.

Throughout the past ten years, social media has increasingly become a phenomenon all over the world. In the United States alone, 81% of the population owns some sort of social media account (“Percentage of U.S. population”). With this increasing number, social media has reached an extremely large audience in which resulted in a melting pot of diverse discussions on daily topics. Due to this enormous audience, one must be quite cautious about what they share online. These platforms have become a useful tool that may result in real-life consequences if used in an inefficient way.

The perpetuation of this fake news problem has created anxiety among politicians in free democratic societies.

The internet age has led to the creation of numerous reputable organizations and databases devoted to political fact checking, making it easier than ever to find to identify debunked statements. However, these organizations’ credibility is being actively undermined by the politicians they try to hold to account, and the growing anti-institutional sentiment amongst voters is causing an unsettling number of people to fall for the fallacies of conspiracy theorists over the word of institutional authorities.
