Nathaniel Hawthorne’s ancestors were the very men who put the accused to death in the famous Salem Witch Trials. Hawthorne was very embarrassed to be the descendant of such people, so he clearly showed his distaste of Puritan customs and culture in his writings. As an example, in The House of the Seven Gables, Nathaniel revealed his repugnance at the ancient ancestors that put innocent people to death for witchery, as it is shown in the book in a symbolic way with his characters, such as Matthew Maule. Nathaniel was not a transcendentalist, but was definitely influenced by the transcendentalists of his time, while he was himself a Dark Romantic, just like other famous writers in his time, including Edgar

Perhaps this is why throughout many of Hawthorne’s books we find he wrote in a bad view of the Puritans, their somewhat superstitious practices, and so forth that exhibited the bad taste in their religion, in his opinion. It greatly embarrassed Hawthorne to be their descendant and dramatically affected what he would wrote about in his stories throughout his life, that are known to this day as great exhibits of American Romanticism.

In both stories Nathaniel Hawthorne offers a portrait of how he views puritan society by setting each story in a small Puritan village, and in “Young Goodman Brown” he shows his true contempt by setting the story about villagers conspiring with the devil in Salem, his childhood home. He portrays the villagers in each story as gossiping, in “The Minister's Black Veil” and as followers of Satan in “Young Goodman Brown”. These stories would not have the same impact or offer the in-depth look at Hawthorne they do if the stories were set elsewhere. Nathaniel Hawthorne was a transcendentalist. He judged his Puritan ancestors in their deeds, especially the witch persecutions. Transcendentalism, Puritanism and the idea of witchcraft were reflected in his novel The Scarlet Letter. Although The Scarlet Letter doesn‘t address witchcraft directly, witchcraft saturates the background of the novel. Many factors factors had their influence on the Puritan society, be it positive or negative.
During the time at which the novel The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, was written, people were help to higher standards regarding what was viewed as acceptable in a society, mostly shown through religious moral standards. Hawthorne was also able to show the effects of guilt specifically during that time, following a sin that was seen as completely unacceptable in this society, and how it would affect someone in their life, especially if kept private. He relates many of his stories to Adam and Eve and the fall of mankind with the introduction of sin. Many characters, in both Rappaccini’s Daughter and The Birthmark, will relate to a biblical character or a mythological character with how they relate to something or how they act. Hawthorne relates his writings to things that are well know and makes it much easier for the reader to understand or relate to. Some of these examples are displayed in Rappaccini’s Daughter with how the garden and the scientist relate to biblical figures.

In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel, The Scarlet Letter, Hester is scolded for her adultery but through 7 years of penance, only then, she starts to be accepted into the Puritan town of Salem again. Puritan beliefs valued seeking salvation from God through acts of kindness and honor. However, the novel reveals the truth behind Puritan Society to the extent that keeps the reputation of the Puritans flawed but still righteous. I founded interesting that the author noticed that the Salem village is the center of the witchcraft misbelief. By everything the evil noted in Goodman Brown; it makes sense that Hawthorne would use a Salem village for this story. In my reflection about the story, I realize that is a place where the events continuously happened because it has a different incidents or devices that are widely found in the literature and recognized as motifs appear. He later added the “w” later in his life to distinguish himself from his ancestors, such as John Hathorne, who dappled in the Salem witch trials. After graduating from college, Hawthorne submerged himself in researching his ancestral roots and his Puritan past. His research helped to push him into writing his many stories.
Nathaniel Hawthorne was the only son of Captain Nathaniel Hathorne. Nathaniel added the “w” himself after he graduated college. In 1838, Nathaniel met Sophia Amelia Peabody (soon to be Mrs. Sophia Amelia Peabody Hawthorne) and the next year they were engaged. Some very important people in Hawthorne’s life that effected not only his life but his career as a writer were Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. The well-known transcendentalist influenced most of Hawthorne’s ideas and fumed lots of his inspiration towards his career.

I wore the letter D on my shirt. I took the letter and stapled it to my shirt to get as close to the sow job that happened in the book to Hester. This was a cool experience that I can’t wait to share with you. I thought originally that it was going to draw a lot of attention to me but barley any one noticed. The only ones that asked me any questions were my friends.
