Literacy narratives help accomplish multiple tasks so their work can fall into the genre of narrative literacy. Looking into Graff , Barrientos , and Alexie narrative stories we see they all share the same task, which is to share their experience with reading. Other task they incorporated into their stories was to share tips o how to read. For example, using cliff notes to give you a heads up on what you will be reading. Graff shows us how he used cliff notes to engage in a "classic" book, therefore he was able to annotate the reading. Alexie expresses that kids can teach themselves how to tread by picking up any interesting book. He used his comic book to help him learn how to read, eventually he read every minute of his life. Lastly Barrientos shows us how assimilating can cause a negative impact on your roots. She …show more content…
Graff story is about how he judged a book by the cover, but later was interested in it. He always saw classic books as "alien" to him because it was something he was not interested in. Eventually, he found a way to get himself involved with the book, he used cliff notes or review s on the book. The interest increased causing him to reread the book. As for Alexie experience he liked any book because his father had a whole house full of variety. He talks about how a book can help you learn how to read, and learn the structure of a book. He saw life as an "item of paragraphs" because everything belong to a section that made up a story or meaning. Just like Alexie saw life as a paragraph and that everything needed to fit into a section, in contrast Barrientos did not fit into the category. She assimilated to the wrong category which caused her to have trouble coming back to her roots. She "wanted to call (herself) Latina ", but she knew she did not belong there anymore. Even though, she tried to learn the language again she was not able to digest all the part of the
Taking different English and writing classes has allowed me to write different types of papers. One paper that can be very challenging is the personal narrative. There are certain requirements that you must follow; each paper is different depending on who assigns it. When I am assigned to write this type of paper, usually it is dreadful to start and accomplish. This type of paper should just be removed from college writing courses.

Literacy Narrative Essay Well, there are many things that made me the reader and writer I am, only a few important events had huge impacts on me. Events such as; teachers constantly correcting my grammar, not being able to pronounce certain words, and a soccer injury that made me a pick up a book. These things helped me become the reader and writer I am. It gave me motivation, strength , and courage.
In my literacy Narrative I will be tackling two problems. The first being my illiteracy in fanti, and the second being my struggle with speaking and pronunciation when I was little. I will be covering a small moment from preschool when I first started to struggle with pronunciation, and discuss how I fixed my english, but at the same time lost any linguistic connection I had to fanti. The second problem will more primarily be focused on in the introduction and conclusion, while the first will be the subject of my small moment. The defining moment any particular will be when my teacher talks to my parents, about me having a literacy problem with speaking english properly.
Sherman Alexie is an Indian boy who started to read books because of his father who he looked up to. Since he loved his father’s devotion, he picked up a book and there he first understood the purpose of a paragraph. “The words themselves were mostly foreign, but I still remember the exact moment when I first understood… the purpose of a paragraph…” (Alexie paragraph 3). When he discovered what a paragraph was, he started comparing his family to a paragraph.
When Alexie realized what the purpose of a paragraph was, he felt delighted and experienced happiness. “I didn’t have the vocabulary to say “paragraph,” but I realized that a paragraph was a fence that held words… This knowledge delighted me” (Alexie 583). With learning the definition of the word “paragraph”, the author’s curiosity of reading increased. The author also began to see his family as paragraphs (Alexie 583).
Graff’s father was frustrated with him for not reading, he kept him supplied with a variety to read. The books that his father would bring would excite the average person, they included: the hardy boys, detective, adventure, war and scientific discovery. Graff contended that out of all the various subjects he
The first time one is able to comprehend the meaning of a word is a momentous childhood moment that is forever engraved in one’s memory. Books and reading are significantly impactful to people’s lives; Mark Twain said that, “books are for people who wish they were somewhere else.” This statement is apropo for Sherman Alexie, who was a Native American living on a reservation during the time he learned to read. Sherman Alexie convinces his audience that an education is crucial to being successful by using personal anecdotes to captivate and create a connection with his audience and repetition to reiterate the importance of having an education. Alexie's use of personal anecdotes fortifies the impact he has on his audience.
Alexie’s analogy of a paragraph to a fence creates a new importance of the paragraph distinguishes, and gives deeper insight to the author’s childhood and views. The author states how important he views a paragraph to be, which tells the reader that the distinctions between paragraphs is important. This also allows the reader to see how the narrator views the world. Fences can keep people in and protect people, but they also keep new ideas out. The author describes the reservation as paragraph, simultaneously calling it a fence.

1. Single stories are stereotypes that are based off of one perspective of a group of people. Single stories are built upon each other and define people;however, single stories aren't always true. There is a saying "don't judge a book by its cover". However, people of all generations are very judgmental.
My relationship with literacy has been a journey all on its own. From learning how to sound out letters and words, to reading my first sentence , I have developed quite a valuable foundation and platform, that will eventually guide me to success. I have had the pleasure of experiencing a love that just continues to blossom. A love that will never fail, nor will I fail it. This love that I speak of is my passion for reading, writing and literacy as a whole.
Literacy has applied over the course of my education and my life. As an education major, I believed that literacy was an ability to learn how to read and write. Furthermore, literacy has been a part of my education. I have come to an understanding that literacy is a lot more than what it seems. It’s about expressing yourself that includes your opinions and feelings.
The history of my literacy has been a long road of a frustration and learned lessons. As a child, I was a bit of a loner so reading and writing were the closest thing to a social life for me. The things that I bottled up inside came out through my writing and it became somewhat of a pass time for me. As long I could remember literacy as has been an important value for me in my life because from very young age I got express my true self without being judged by the outside. Even though in my later years I would deal with some heartaches and set back that lead me to give up on my love for reading.
Stories of realism have no once upon a time or happily ever after. It is realistic, lays feelings aside, and tells the truth about how life really is. Authors of realism stories are all interested in the same thing, exposing the truth about the world. Every realism story has a struggle, and instead of giving each story a happy ending, authors use a detached tone to explain that bad things do happen in life. In the stories The Jungle, “The Men in the Storm,” and “To Build a Fire,” the authors display realism by describing the struggle against overwhelming odds, the gritty details, and an unemotional tone.
