Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION Mucoadhesion is due to strong interaction between chemical groups of polymers and mucosal lining of the tissues. Mucin, the principal component of mucus, is responsible for the gel-like properties of the mucus. Mucin, basically glycoproteins, which consist of a protein core covalently attached over its length with carbohydrate chains. Mucus helps in protecting the tissues from chemical and mechanical damages using its lubrication properties. Mucoadhesive interactions achieved mainly by hydrogen bonding of carboxyl, hydroxyl and other hydrogen bonding groups between glycoprotein and mucin.1 Transmucosal delivery of therapeutic agents attained much attention compared to other methods of drug delivery in recent days. Transmucosal …show more content…
However, typical controlled release formulations are limited by insufficient retention in the stomach. The strategies which are developed to overcome this includes, (a) low density floating DDS b) high density DDS retains in the lower part of the stomach, (c) mucoadhesive delivery systems, (d) swellable which unfolds in the stomach to hinder its escape through the pyloric sphincter. An alternative strategy which combines bioadhesion with the ability to expand by swelling, would be beneficial. This may overcome challenges for oral mucoadhesive systems such as harsh environment of the stomach, which, due to its low pH, results in an inactivation of a wide range of drugs. And also, it prevents the low residence time of the drug at the site of absorption due to wash out effect in the GI tract due to the intestinal motility. Mucoadhesive controlled drug delivery systems are very beneficial, since they provide a controlled drug release over time and localize the drug to a specific site of the body. The prolonged residence time of the drug in the body is believed to prolong duration of
Limaye PMCY 6510 Take Home Final Exam Metformin hydrochloride (N,N-dimethylimidodicarbonimidic diamide hydrochloride) is a white to off-white crystalline compound with a molecular formula of C4H11N5•HCl and a molecular weight of 165.63. Metformin hydrochloride is freely soluble in water and is practically insoluble in acetone, ether, and chloroform. Metformin belongs to BCS class III with high solubility and low permeability. This also allows for designing a controlled release formulation of metformin hydrochloride. However, due to the high dose amounts and dosing frequency, it has been a challenge to develop once daily metformin formulation.

Q1A: What is the mechanism of action of colistin? Colistin is an antibiotic that works best against Gram-negative bacteria. It works by binding to LPSs (lipopolysaccrides) and phospholipids in the outer cell membrane of the bacteria. This, in turn, disrupts the outer cell membrane by displacing cations and leaking the intracellular contents, combining it with outer cellular contents, causing the bacteria to be unable to differentiate the bacteria’s intra and outer cellular contents from one another.
MAYO AND KETCHUP “EW DISGUSTING IT SMELLED LIKE A DUMPSTER IN THERE”! I said as I ran out of the white house nauseously. I shouldn’t have dared my brother to drink mayo and ketchup. I ran back inside as I felt blue with illness. I heard vomiting noise from the bathroom “UCK PLUCK”!
Elizabeth Barron Winters OA April 17, 2017 Case study 2 Immunological malfunction Question 1 IgA is a monomer in plasma and is a dimer in mucus, tears, intestinal secretions and milk. Its function is to prevent pathogens from penetrating underlying tissues and sticking to epithelia. IgD is a transmembrane protein of B cells and its function is to help the activation of B Cells by antigens. IgE is a transmembrane protein of basophils and mast cells, its function is to simulate the release of histamine and other inflammation mediators. IgG is the circulating antibodies in blood plasma, it is secreted in the secondary immune response.
Summary for Poop Pills Article New discoveries involving the use of stool pills for medication has aided patients in relieving themselves of the infection Clostridium difficile. Clostridium difficile, or more commonly referred to as C-diff, is an infection of the bowl system that can be deadly. Previous remedies for C-diff included uncomfortable and expensive colonoscopies, in which a tube is place through the rectum to the colon. The newer method of stool pills proves increasingly successful, while being less uncomfortable. Feces is taken from a healthy donor, then to a lab where bacteria and food are withdrawn from the stool.

Improvement or Deterioration In modern society many doctors and scientists have distinct thoughts about the many cancer treatments that they believe will defeat the disease. Some scientists and doctors question whether or not the new advanced treatments in the medical field actually benefit cancer patients. There are many new treatments being made in the cancer medical field which include infection, surgery, and new combinations of medicine. In Emily Eakin’s article, “Bacteria on the Brain”, she explores Paul Muizelaar’s treatment of infecting cancer causing brain tumors with Enterobacter Aerogenes to lessen the tumor.
Adhesive tape is still used today in modern hospitals all over the world. Adhesive tape is used now to hold together wounds and to wrap around a sprain or to cover up stitches. If someone was to look at the ingredients in a drug you would probably see honey in a lot of them. The idea of honey to help an illness was invented by the Egyptians. Honey was one of the most popular drug used in Egypt.
Other than photographing bloodstain, a rough sketch is also helpful to demonstrate the usually looks of the blood stains and additionally their relative position to different zones of the crime scene (Saferstein, 2011). The sketch must include the location and direction of the blood stain (Saferstein, 2011). Utilize high force lighting in finding blood evidence, typical lighting is lacking for little stains, for example, high speed. After finishing a scene investigation, the investigator should go over it one more time with ultra-violet lgith (Saferstein, 2011).This might uncover stains possible overlooked with the bare eye or with the utilization of high power light (Saferstein, 2011). Search for spots where blood should be however isn't,
It is produced by the pharmaceutical company Abbott, and was FDA approved in July of 2016 [20]. The fully bioresorbable scaffold contains a polymer platform 150 µm thick made from polylactic acid (PLLA) and a poly-D,L-lactide (PDLLA) layer for rapid degradation. The PDLLA eludes the drug everolimus at a concentration of 8.2 µg/mm to prevent restenosis [3,5]. Within the first 30 days of implantation, approximately 80% of the everolimus is released, followed by a more gradual release of the remaining 20% [3]. Figure 4:
In order to compare the adjuvant activity of compound mucosal immune adjuvant (cMIA), two novel compound adjuvants (cMIA I and cMIA II) were prepared and mixed with Newcastle-disease (ND) vaccine. The humoral and cellular immune responses were determined by means of hemagglutination inhibition test, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, semi-quantitative RT-PCR, immunohistochemical examination and histological examination. The results showed that two compound adjuvants could promote CD3+ T lymphocytes, IgA secreting cells, intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes (iIEL) and Mast cells formation and enhance serum and content antibody titer. The best adjuvant activity of cMIA II in promoting cellular immunity and cMIA I in enhancing humoral immunity occurred in whole immune period. Based on good synergistic effects of their components, two cMIAs would be expected as new-type mucosal immune adjuvants for mucosal immune.
Fix or replace damaged tissue; biology has always been the main concern for scientists. Today, the most important instrument for tissue engineering scientists to produce replacement tissues and implants to repair or replace damaged tissue. Tissue engineering is generating a new field of study in which the principles of engineering and biology to correct the damaged tissue, uses and can renewal, operation and maintenance of tissue healing. In order to use an ideal scaffold Tissue engineering should have features such as non-toxic Cell and tissue properties to be fit.
