Mt. Vesuvius
Mt. Vesuvius is a stratovolcano in the Gulf of Naples, Italy, only about 9km east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. A stratovolcano is a tall, cone-shaped volcano which is composed of one layer of hardened lava, tephra, and volcanic ash. Stratovolcanoes such as Vesuvius are known for periodic, explosive eruptions. The lava that flows from them is usually highly viscous, or thick. Mt. Vesuvius is best known for its eruption on August 24, 79 A.D, which destroyed the cities Pompeii, Herculaneum, and multiple other Roman settlements. The cities were destroyed by a large pyroclastic eruption. Pyroclastic eruptions are large, lava spewing eruptions with immense flows of fast moving volcanic ash, gases, and rock which can reach speeds of 450 mph and temperatures of 1,830 °F. Mt. Vesuvius is currently still an active volcano of the Campanian volcanic arc, which consists of multiple active, dormant, and extinct volcanoes centered on the bay of Naples. The arc formed over a subduction zone created by the convergence of the African and Eurasian plates. Underneath Vesuvius, the lower section of the subducting slab has torn and detached from the upper part to create what is known as a “slab window”, causing the rocks erupted from Vesuvius to have a slight chemical difference from the rocks erupted from other Campanian volcanoes.

Starting in 1631, Vesuvius entered a period of stable volcanic activity, which consisted of lava flows and eruptions of ash and mud. The most recent eruption was in 1944, during WWII. The eruption caused major problems for the newly-arrived Allied Forces in Italy when ash and rocks from the eruption destroyed planes and forced evacuations of the nearby
The recent eruption of Mount Barujari in Bali, Indonesia on the island of Javi has led to the evacuation of over 1,100 citizens, and the search for 389 foreign tourists. Although no injuries have been reported so far, the disaster damaged over 3,500 meters near where it occurred. The incident closed several airports in the area, stranding a ton of people. In the article, Mt. Vesuvius: Day of Disaster by Lauren Tarshis, it talks about what happened when this massive volcano erupted, in Italy, next to a town called Pompeii. At the time, they did not know that it was a volcano, or that it was going to become one of the most famous eruptions in history. The author walks the reader through what probably was going on before the eruption, and also made it seem like the reader was actually part of the story. She also tells the reader some facts that a lot of people may not know, such as some information on what happened before the eruption. In the end, Mt. Vesuvius ' eruption was one of the most famous and destructive eruptions in history.

The “Black Death” is history’s first pandemic. This pandemic originated in China in 1334 and peaked in Europe. This plague wiped out entire towns. There were so many deaths, that there were not enough survivors remaining to bury the people who have passed (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). It is believed that the cause of this outbreak was because of the bacterium Yersinia pestis, according to forensic research (Saylor).
The hot material deep within the surface of the Earth melts to produce magma beneath the Pacific Plate. Each of the volcanoes in the Hawaiian island chain go through a series of stages in their lifetime. In short, the shield stage, postshield stage, erosional stage, rejuvenated stage, coral atoll stage, and the guyot stage. The shield stage is divided into three phases, the submarine, explosive, and subaerial. Following the gentle explosions of the pre shield stage, the submarine phase begins with pillow lava eruptions.
Unexploded WWII bomb creates havok in Italy Italy was cut in two this morning as an unexploded WWII bomb was removed from a field in Umbria, causing traffic to be stopped on Italy 's busy A1 motorway that joins Milan to Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples . Between 11.30am and 1.30pm the Italian army worked to defuse and remove the 450kg bomb – an operation which everyone within a 1.9 kilometer radius to be evacuated and stopped traffic between major Italian cities. The closure of the road and nearby railway lines between the Umbrian towns of Orte and Orvieto plunged commuters into chaos. By the time the Italian army had removed the unexploded bomb – which was found last Monday – there were queues of cars a kilometer long in both directions along the motorway.
Following up the information about the formation and deadliness of volcanoes is an example of a volcano, Mt.Tambora, one of the deadliest volcanoes ever. This volcano erupted over 200 years ago, but made a big impact all around the world. It erupted for three months in total. You could hear the explosions from over 1,000 miles away(Lassieur 4). This covered things in lava and was very hard to recover because the lava cools and hardens turning it into something as hard as bedrock(Lassieur 3).
There are many natural disasters that affect the world, for example, volcanoes. Mount St. Helens is known to be the most active volcano in the Cascade Range in Washington; effecting the people and the state. It was first recognized as a volcano in 1835! Before the eruption on May 18,1980, Mount St. Helens was a beautiful symmetrical cone, 3,000 meters above sea level. For most of the 20th century, many people viewed this mountain and recreation area as a beautiful and peaceful place, but after the volcano erupted in 1980 that view point was shattered.
In theory, the Mauna Loa could have been erupting for 100,000 years. Mauna Loa is second youngest of the five of volcano on the Island of Hawaii. It began erupting about 700,000 to 1,000,000 year ago. It is one of the five volcanoes that was created as plates in the ocean moved over the Hawaii hotspot in the Earth’s underlying mantle. From the past, Mauna Loa had begun as a submarine volcano, growing underwater until it finally surfaced and created a great part of the land of Hawaii.
However, the eruption on May 18th was a true surprise. Within minutes, the mountain went from calm and quiet to become one of the greatest powerful natural disaster ever recorded in the U.S-
Triggered the largest landslide in recorded history and a major volcanic eruption that scattered ashes across a dozen states. The blast removed 1,300 feet off the top of Mt. St. Helen, making shockwave flow across the land, flattening forests and melting snow and ice, making it all muddy everywhere. A 57 total
On May 18th, 1980, thirty-five years ago, Mt St. Helens erupted and changed the course of history. This towering Washington volcano is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. During the eruption the mountain spewed hot gases, rocks and, ash into the sky causing a mud flow down the mountain 's sides. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration," this was the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in the history of the United States".
