A recurring motive runs through Shakespearean plays, in which deaths happen relatively frequently. Looking specifically at Romeo & Juliet, in which most of the play's major characters do not survive the ending of the play, either by murder or natural occurrences, this motive is made clear from early on in the play. Even before the play turns to a tragedy, as Shakespeare has written the first part of the play as a comedy and the second part as a romance, there are already many deaths that take place during encounters between the strife of the two feuding families; the Capulets and the Montagues. This tendency for character death at first glance seems to be a mere plot device or even coincidental, however, a clear explanation can be given after …show more content…
For sake of chronology and order we will go over them one by one, from the beginning of the play to the end. In the third act of Romeo & Juliet a duel ensues between members of the houses of Capulet and Montague, which Tybalt had arranged to put Romeo in his place after he attended the Capulets’ ball. Initially Romeo refuses to fight Tybalt, which is why Mercutio takes his place and duels with Tybalt. Mercutio loses to Tybalt and is stabbed under Romeo’s arm, marking the first death in the play. Quickly thereafter, Romeo takes revenge for his fallen comrade, in turn killing Tybalt, leading to his excommunication. Hearing of her son’s exile, Lady Montague is tremendously struck with grief and dies of a heart attack, which is mentioned later on, as his happened offstage. At the end of the play, Juliet fakes her own death, to avoid marrying Paris and to be able to run away with Romeo, according to Friar Lawrence’s plan. However, Romeo was not properly informed of this scheme, so he thought Juliet had really perished. When Paris himself wanted to say his last goodbyes to Juliet, he found a grief-stricken Romeo, who murders Paris after a short duel. After this encounter, believing he would never see his love of his live again, Romeo takes a bottle of poison, killing him on Juliet’s apparent deathbed. On the sight of her deceased lover, Juliet takes a pocket knife and also commits to
In my mind this gives me every reason to believe the death of Romeo and Juliet is a result of the hatred between their families and the tension of their love to keep it secret. Another main character that I thought played a huge role in the deaths in Romeo and Juliet is Mr. Capulet (Juliet's father). In Document D Mr. Capulet says “But fettle your fine joint’s ‘gainst Thursday next, To go with Paris to Saint Peter’s Church, Or I will drag thee on a hurdle thither” DBQ Project: Romeo and Juliet Who’s to blame Document D. In my opinion Mr. Capulet is the reason Juliet later fakes her death to get out of the marriage between her and Paris.
First, in anger after Tybalt put death to Mercutio, Romeo killed Tybalt just moment after mercutio. Romeo and Tybalt were sword fighting and Romeo stabbed Tybalt that put an end to him. The Prince warned them the previous time they fought that they will be sentenced to death if it ever happens again. Second, the conflict within the Montague family and Capulet family rose even greater after this incident.
Tybalt takes offense to Romeo's presence at the Capulet's party and challenges him to a fight, despite attempts by Mercutio to claim the situation. This leads to Mercutio’s death. “Alive in triumph, and Mercutio slain! Away to heaven, respective lenity, And fire-eyed fury be my conduct now!” (3.3.118-120).
The play, Romeo and Juliet, is about two star-crossed lovers that had been led to their death because of various actions of different characters. The actions that caused the death of these lovers were foolish. The characters that greatly impacted the death of Romeo and Juliet are the two households, Montague and Capulet, Friar Laurence and the two lovers themselves, Romeo and Juliet. Whether deliberately or unintentionally, their actions have all lead to the tragic death.
Romeo in his new home, receives news from his close friend that Juliet is dead, and was carried into the Capulet family tomb. Romeo instantly buys a poison potion from a local drug dealer, and rides on his horse to the Capulet household. He breaks his way into the tomb where he finds Paris, the man who was also supposed to marry Juliet. They engage in a battle, and Paris falls to the floor, dead. After this, Romeo finds Juliet and decides it is time to end his life to be with Juliet in heaven.
My suspense of these three main characters are responsible for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. Lord and Lady capulet,Romeo, and Friar Lawrence have all had parts in the deaths of the two characters. They either had parts by force of marriage, out of love, and trying to help. Romeo and Juliet was a very love-stucken play that falls in the hands of the wrong
After he saw Romeo lurking at the party for the Capulets, he challenged Romeo to a duel. Of course, Romeo could never back down from a duel so he accepted. Tybalt ends up killing Mercutio and Romeo says “either thou or I, or both, must go with him.” (III,1,134) Out of anger and revenge, Romeo kills Tybalt. Romeo had killed him in vengeance, so he was banishèd to Mantua.
Tybalt stabs Mercutio” (Act. 3 S. 1 L. 89). In this quote, Tybalt stabs Mercutio which angers Romeo and leads Romeo to kill Tybalt in a battle shortly after. The Prince exiles Romeo to Mantua for fighting in the streets of Verona, sparing him death only because it was self-defense. This splits Romeo and Juliet apart which led to Juliet’s plan of faking her death being miscommunicated to Romeo, leading him to think she truly
In the morning, the nurse discovers her and pronounces her dead. Of all the things the Friar has done so far, giving Juliet the poison is the worst of his actions. As the Friar’s plan goes, Romeo did not receive the letter from the servant describing the situation of how Juliet is not dead, only sleeping. Romeo then kills himself when he sees his ‘dead’ wife, and when Juliet rises only to see her dead husband, she ends her life with a

The long standing-family feuding and fate is ultimately to blame for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. Some people may think that Romeo and Juliet are ultimately to blame for their own deaths, because they both killed themselves. They are wrong, the
Heartbroken, he found Juliet’s body, still affected by the potion on her tomb. He drank a poisonous potion so he could die beside her. When Juliet did eventually awake, she was greeted with the sight of her dead lover and stabbed herself
Through the predominant influences of certain characters, inconsistency of decision making, and secretiveness amongst the characters, these events quickly lead to the grievous incident of the play. All the way from past hatred and persuasive friends, to emotionally driven decisions such as Romeo’s desire to be married and his vengeance, the play concluded with potions that provoked counter outcomes. Romeo and Juliet displayed the risks they were willing to take in the name of love, but in the end, poor choices took responsibility for the continuous occurrences that lead to dreadful ends; however, opposed to the idea of fate, or a stronger force guiding the character’s actions. With this, the play closed with the poisonous idea of the love that Romeo and Juliet shared, including all that they would sacrifice to have a chance at a life
“Romeo is banned from Verona, which leads to him to seek out some pretty bad advice and guidance from Friar Laurence.” (Shmoop.com). The news Romeo receives is that Juliet is dead and in the Capulet's tomb Romeo does not know abou the fact he is supposed to be at Juliet's side when she wakes.
