In Left Neglected, Sarah Nickerson lives a fast paced life where she juggles her role as a mother, wife, and vice president of Berkley consulting. She strives to please everyone in her life yet she is completely unaware of the negative consequences that this lifestyle may cause. In her attempt to be a “good” mother, Sarah focuses on devoting her time to her children, attending every possible game and assisting them with their homework. (Genova, Lisa, 2011, p.15). Moreover, she senses that her personal relationship needs improvement because the overall chemistry has condensed.

Babies are mysterious, fascinating, little creatures. They form in about nine months, and roughly a year after birth they have developed into little adults, doing many of the same things as adults. When I read Infant-Mother Attachment by Mary D Salter Ainsworth, I thought mostly of my niece, a baby I have seen develop greatly in her first year of life and how my single sister played a part in it. Throughout her life, she grows up to meet to people and learns how to become successful in something that she loves to do, cooking. Knowing how her mother was when she was younger, Ruth automatically assumes that nothing has change but, seventeen years later, she learns how her mother’s manic depression has worsened.

Exploring Psychology by David G Myers (2014) says that a psychological disorder is a syndrome marked by a “clinically significant disturbance in an individual’s cognition, emotion regulation, or behavior” (American Psychiatric Association 2013)(p. 506). In the movie Mommie Dearest directed by Frank Perry we see Joan Crawford played by Faye Dunaway. The character Joan portrays many different psychological disorders, which affects how we see her role in the movie. Multiple disorders were evident throughout the film, but three major disorders that were noticeable were obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar, and borderline. Mommie Dearest is a story about Joan Crawford (Faye Dunaway) who is a great Hollywood actress.

When she was young, she could not process the way her father raised and treated her, so she believed everything he said. When she is able to understand, her tone changes and becomes clinical and critical remembering the way he constantly let her

Simone’s struggles started early in her childhood. Her mother was a drug and alcohol abuser; she did not even know her dad. Her grandparents took her in, and she knew them as Mom and Dad ever since then. Having a strong relationship with her mom has been a very positive thing in Simone’s life.

While reading the story, you can tell in the narrators’ tone that she feels rejected and excluded. She is not happy and I’m sure, just like her family, she wonders “why her?” She is rejected and never accepted for who she really is. She is different. She’s not like anyone else

In this case, Sinead’s problem should not be looked at as her own issue but instead an issue that may have been projected upon her by her family who seems to have set very high standards. Next I also looked into attachment theory and I have learned that problems with attachment at an early stage, such as disorganised attachment where the child is confused or disorientated about their relationship with their parents, could lead to immense stress upon the child. Hence the child, in this case Sinead, may want to find connection and comfort with other sources. Sinead may develop an unsafe obsession with certain celebrities or models that appeal to her and this could result in an obsession with losing weight, working out and achieving the same beauty as her obsession.
