Martin Luther King Jr. was a gifted child from an early age—so smart, in fact, that he was accepted into college at the age of 15! MLK is a changemaker who was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He helped enact the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act and is renowned for his peaceful fight for Black Americans' equal rights. It led to his being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was accepted to Morehouse College. According to History.com, “A gifted student, King attended segregated public schools and at the age of 15 was admitted to Morehouse College, the alma mater of both his father and maternal grandfather, where he studied medicine and law” (Somerstein). may be best known to many of us as the speaker of the "I Have a Dream" speech. However, what other things did he help bring about or contribute to? King is referred to as a "civil rights legend" by National Geographic. The civil rights movement that ended segregation was also led by King. The National Geographic points out, “Through his connections with the Big Five civil rights groups, overwhelming support from Black America, and with the support of prominent individual well-wishers, King’s skill and effectiveness grew exponentially. He organized and led marches for Blacks' right to vote, desegregation, labor rights, and other basic civil rights” (Who was Martin Luther King, Jr.?). Due to his prominent position in the media, he frequently received threats against his life and, at one time, had his home firebombed. He also organized the bus boycott, which in addition, elevated him to a position of national prominence. He gave the renowned "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Monument in front of a gathering of 250,000 people. King is commended for his nonviolent protests. At the age of 35, Martin Luther King, Jr. became the youngest person to win the Nobel peace prize. His advocacy for social justice and civil rights earned him the Nobel Peace Prize.
