Pro Stowe or No Stowe: The Correct Answer It is nigh impossible to find a more influential piece of literature in American history than Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It provided one of the first moral arguments against slavery and sold so many copies that the only other book at the time to outsell it was the Bible. It is even considered to have sparked the Civil War. Although the impact that she had is undeniable, Stowe’s effectiveness as an author is questionable.

By establishing three colonies: New England, Middle, and Southern, men were finally gaining their independence from Britain in various ways. One way was by being able to make a living.
In the years on up to the Missouri Compromise of 1820, tensions began to rise between pro-slavery and anti-slavery groups across the country. The horrible compromise that sacrificed the rights of African Americans in favor of a more stronger union in the states exploded once more in 1819 when Missouri requested to join the United States as a slave state. In 1819, the nation had eleven free and eleven slave states creating a balance in the U.S. senate. Missouri's entrance threatened to throw this parity in favor of slave’s strong feelings toward it. The debate in Congress over the admission of Missouri was unusally and extraordinary bitter after Congressman James Tallmadge from New York put forward an idea that slavery be banned in the new state.

The effect of the Missouri Compromise was the immediate satisfaction of the members of Congress that no national decisions about slavery, applying to every state, would be made by a majority. Similarly, the Missouri Compromise is related to the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 in which Stephen Douglass allowed the new states Kansas and Nebraska to decide amongst themselves whether slavery would be legal. Because Kansas and Nebraska were not in the Louisiana Purchase, this new act had to be created to again distribute states as free or slave. It is important because it immediately settled the disagreement over what new states would be free or slave, but highlighted the overall
It gave slaves who were fighting for their freedom a reason to hope again, and it gave those who supported the Union moral support to depend on. However, a fully realized victory did not arrive until the Thirteenth Amendment completed the Emancipation Proclamation and freed all the slaves. This was when the Union truly won the Civil
It socially led to many positive outcomes for the north like the emancipation proclamation did. Abe Lincoln gave the Gettysburg address November 19, 1863 to remind americans what they were fighting for. He referenced the principles of equality and the declaration of independence. The north took well to the speech and gave americans hope and drive again to beat out the confederates. Many would agree that this was the “turning point of the civil war”.
The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was an attempt by Congress to ease some of the political rivalries between the North and the South (history.com 2009). The compromise stated the fact that all states up north would not have slavery and all states south would allow and continue the act of slavery (history.com 2009). It went both ways since it split the country up evenly between slave and free. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was handwritten by Henry Clay in 1820 (ancestralfindings.com 1995). On March 6th of 1820, President James Monroe signed the Missouri Compromise and made it the new law of the land (loc.gov 2017).
This proposed plan was called the Missouri Compromise. The compromise stated that slavery states could not be admitted higher than the 36 degree 30’ north parallel-with the exception of Missouri. However, to balance the addition of one pro slavery state, a district of Massachusetts, named Maine, was also admitted to the union as a anti slavery state. This allowed both factions the addition of a state, without losing or gaining any power over the other. This was why the Missouri Compromise truly was a compromise and benefited both the pro slavery states and the anti slavery
The Missouri compromise was an agreement between the north and south. It allowed Missouri to be the 24th state. Maine was also established, therefore Missouri was a free state. The Mason Dixon line was established, this created a line between the slave and free states. This rule was broken, and even more conflict was contributed to the start of the civil war.
The issue the compromise was about was whether there should be slavery in the western territories. Maine wanted to be added to the Union, however, slavery was banned there. If Maine were to be added to the Union, it would upset the balance between free and slave states in the nation and the Senate. So, the Missouri Compromise, proposed by Senator Henry Clay, allowed Maine to enter the Union as a free state, and allowed Missouri to be entered into the Union as a slave state.
Harriet Beecher Stowe was one of the outstanding essayist in American society in the 19th century. In Uncle Tom’s Cabin the issue of slavery is at the fore front of the book, which is why it is so oftenly discussed. This tale, in my opinion, is one of the best books in which the topic of slavery is vividly portrayed. The author, Harriet Beecher Stowe, possessed the skills to clearly portray the lives of slaves who were viewed and treated like items which others could sell or barter. Close to if not every part of the book nags at the humanity of the reader by showing the horrors of slavery causing the reader to realize that there is no role for such a cruel system in a civilized society. The author also points out that while in the most suitable living environments, slaves still experience misery.
