The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has defined six key values for social work practice: service, social justice, the importance of human relationships, dignity and worth of the person, and competence.
Social justice is an essential core value within Mission Australia in guiding its programs and campaigns. This is exemplified by Mission Australia addressing and educating the community on social injustice and disadvantage, pushing for systemic change to enhance the lives of marginalised and at-risk individuals. By offering services and programmes that aim to address the underlying causes of social problems, like education on homelessness, Mission Australia exemplifies the fundamental concept of social justice and why it should be addressed not only by charity organisations but the general public. For instance, their housing and homelessness programmes work to give those who are homeless or at risk of becoming so safe and affordable accommodation in which donations of the community are accepted. Adding to the collective stereotype; bogans and yobbos have played a developmental role in the Australians characteristic identity.
This paper will review the relationship between the Commonwealth Department of Human Services (DHS) and the Australian Government. DHS supports millions of Australians from all demographics, backgrounds and ages. The Minister for Human Services (the Minister) is responsible for the delivery of these services. The Federal Minister for Social Services, the Hon Christian Porter MP is the Cabinet Minister who represents DHS and has the overarching responsibility of the policy and legislation for these services. According to many historians, 1917 was the worst year in WW1 for Australians. This year was the third year in a devastating war that many Australians believed we should have been involved with because it was on the other side of the world. Due to the distance and the number of deaths, volunteer numbers dropped considerably. It was because of this, that the Australian government wanted to introduce a divisive policy of conscription. 1917 Was truly a destructive year for Australia and Australians.
Fairchild opened his piece with a play on the wording of the national anthem, using ‘Advance Australia, fair!’ to highlight the irony of how Australians were acting in a manner distinctly unfair to Indigenous Australians. He then moved to use a personal anecdote about his experience as a social worker to inspire feelings of trust in his audience, as a social worker is generally deemed as a person who is working for the greater good of society. His specific work with the Wurundjeri people also helps to establish him as an expert in the matter, and positions the readers to feel that he is not simply another person with a loud opinion.
The legacy of the role of social work and welfare services within the implementation of government policies in the past can still compromise relationships within communities, social workers are responsible for ensuring our practice is culturally responsive, safe and sensitive to stop this perpetuation of distrust in support services. As social workers it is important to commit to reconciliation, to addressing divisions and inequities between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australian’s and improving these relationships. Critically Analyse components of the Closing the Gap campaign and identify how these components impact life opportunities of Indigenous Australians The Closing the Gap campaign aims to improve things relating to Indigenous education, employment, health and life expectancy. In regards to education Indigenous school completion rates are significantly low (Helm, 2011). There are a variety of reasons that many Indigenous students do not complete school some of the reasons are that some live in remotes areas which means lack of access to schools, lack of jobs to seek and there are not many adults who have completed secondary education. Empowerment is a social work theory rooted in social justice, with a main goal of reducing social inequalities through community building and redistribution of access to power. However, in order to change one 's environment or self, there must be options available and opportunities for individuals to have control over their own decisions. Thus, clients should feel empowered in their own lives. At my internship, my supervisor is aware of my commitment to social justice. In addition, it is my job to empower the clients I work with. Specifically, the parents that I work with. In addition, there is limited access to power for clients receiving services through the county.
