Mentzer starts off by giving the reader some context as to what influenced Burgess to write a Clockwork Orange. He recounts how Hitler used a huge propaganda campaign and while his tactics were denounced by our government, the Allies were doing the same thing by using our own propaganda to encourage more participation in the war. After the war, some reports came out about Communist brainwashing which led to popular books including 1984 and clockwork orange which helped make mind control a national obsession. Burgess wrote to book to warn the public about the danger of mind control and the danger that we will not realize the negative effects until it is too late. Next Mentzer expresses his belief that modern mind control can be found when looking at behavioural psychologists. A well-known Harvard professor …show more content…
When it comes to ethics, some methods are seen as brutal and dehumanizing. Many people believe that deprivation should be replaced with reward systems, while others say the end justifies the means. The second topic of controversy is the question as to whether behaviour modification actually solves the problem. Ludovic’s technique brought Alex under control, but he never stopped wishing he could go back to his old ways. One view is that with mental illnesses there will always be underlying problems, while a more recent view is that problems are caused by improper learning experiences which can be corrected by other learning experience. Burgess did not know this when he wrote the book, but if he did maybe instead Alex would have been reformed. The third topic of controversy is when behaviour modification methods are applied without knowledge or cooperation. Alex consented but would he still have if he knew what he was going to happen to

As for my own use of Beck’s techniques, I will integrate cognitive aspects of therapy more heavily on clients that seem to be suffering from their anger, hate, hostility, or prejudice. Techniques such as the thought watching can be simple ways of slowing down clients when they are being influenced by their cognitions or emotions. In such cases as domestic violence, Beck’s automatic thought technique, as previously described, is certainly a useful tool for cognitive behavioral

They might just stop us from making the same damn insane mistakes’”(69). This quote shows that censorship has led to to this society going into anonymity while wars and world conflict occur, all the while, no one from the society truly knows what has happened and what is going on in the outside world due to the lies and censorship they face constantly. This display of mind control is directly linked to the censorship they face in this quote because the people of this society are led to believe that everything in the outside world is fine, all the while, they constantly have bomb planes flying over their city threatening complete destruction of their
Through The Psychologist Eye In Lauren Slater’s book, “Opening Skinner’s Box,” we discover in the first three chapters the mysteries behind a few psychological experiments and the discoveries that three profound psychologists have made. Each chapter is about a different psychologist, the first is B.F. Skinner; a behaviorist who designed a process of learning in which behavior is controlled, he called this operant conditioning. Lauren Slater wanted people to know about his experiment, she read his books, talked to friends and family members to unearth the features behind this man. She found that he was a loving father, who could train animals to do unordinary things, like play the piano for an example, through the processes of operant conditioning,
Though Burgess felt A Clockwork Orange was one of his worst works, I’ll have to disagree and say that a couple of aspects of his novel makes it one of the best books I’ve ever read. What sets A Clockwork Orange apart from other coming of age stories is that Alex does
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, by Ken Kesey, considers the qualities in which society determines sanity. The label of insanity is given when someone is different from the perceived norm. Conversely, a person is perceived as sane when their behavior is consistent with the beliefs of the majority. Although the characters of this novel are patients of a mental institution, they all show qualities of sanity. The book is narrated by Chief Brodmen, an observant chronic psychiatric patient, who many believe to be deaf and dumb.
Behavior therapy was studied by Ivan Pavlov and his famous dog study in which dogs were conditioned to salivate upon hearing a bell. It was later continued to be studied by John Watson who has the famous “Little Albert” study in which an 11-month old infant was conditioned to be scared of fuzzy white things because a rat was paired with a loud noise. The conclusion of the two conditioning experiences was that, behaviors followed by satisfying experiences tend to increase in frequency and behaviors followed by aversive experiences tend to decrease in frequency” (Thoma, 2015). Watson’s assistant Mary Jones, used this principle to clinical applications reasoning that, “if conditioning could be used to induce a phobia, perhaps it could be used to undo a phobia as well” (Thoma, 2015). Thus, behavior therapy was developed and began being used for

Thought Police, Thought Crime, and Face Crime gave great examples of the topic of psychological manipulation that occurred in the novel. The illusion that nowhere remained safe to live a private life and one’s self being watched was given by these topics. This made the citizens of Oceania scared to show what they truly felt about the government or the society itself or even local things that happen. The citizens then did not want to question anything in fear of
While this movie may not be for everybody it does contain an interesting and controversial commentary on society. It seems that the primary message argued in A Clockwork Orange is that through abuse Alex has been considered cured, people must not be used as scientific experiments even if the experiment is for the greater good of society. The needs of the many do not outweigh the rights of one and by breaking this moral code by the elected officials drastically changes the way the society favors their government and its practices. Social engineering is not the answer to eliminate a disruptive youth culture and maintaining order within society. Violent impulses, sexual urges, the enjoyment of music, participating in social camaraderie are all essential parts of the human experience and eliminating any part of that experience would eliminate what it means to be a
The biological approach has been effectively practising and treating mental disorders . Drugs therapy has been very popular among the patients and has enabled patients with mental illness to live a reasonably normal life, anti depressant and antipsychotic medications (Tablets) are popular among the patients. Behavioural approach focuses on the behaviour and looks to eliminate unwanted or maladaptive behaviour such as addictions, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) as they believe the behaviour is learned and can be un-learned via different therapy( Counselling- directory.org.uk, 2017).. Desensitisation and reinforcement technique are popular therapy. Similarly, psychodynamic therapist uses the talking therapy (counselling) to treat people with mental illness, they listen to the patient’s feelings and talk about what had happened in their early life and try to resolve the problem they had.
The theory views the offender as either a patient or a victim or both. According to this theory a person who has committed an offense is not morally responsible for the offense he or she has committed because the offense might be the product of an illness in which treatment is required; this type of person is regarded as a patient. When the offense is the product of a dysfunctional social environment the person is regarded as the victim. The advantage of this approach is that it focuses on the offenders, instead of punishing the offenders this approach focuses on repairing and treating the dysfunctional areas that the offenders are experiencing by means of behavioral therapy and other therapeutic programmes.
Alex has no regard whatsoever for the rights of others and the rights of society; the behaviour mentioned is common amongst psychopaths. Alex, spent his youth stealing, torturing,
Thousands of psychologists concern themselves with researching how behavioural and mental phenomena can improve a person’s life. For example, Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) is a clinical technique which is extremely successful in assisting individuals with acquired brain injuries (Cooper, Heron & Heward, 2007). This technique focuses on the functional value of tasks in improving an individual’s deficits. ABA does not train non-functional skills, in line with the functionalist-behaviourist tradition. Functionalism’s concern for practicality and application has been influential for many psychological and behavioural
