Rhetorical Analysis of Mike Rose Emotional, ethical, and logical appeals are all methods used in writing to perused you one way or another on various topics. Mike Rose used all of these techniques in this essay, to show how student who are pushed aside, distracted, or fall behind and fail. In this essay Rose describes that students who have teachers who are unprepared, or incompetent majorly contribute to student failure. He is trying to show that many children have potential that is overlooked or sometimes even ignored, by authority. Emotional appeal is a method using persuasion to receive and emotional response, a good example of this is when Mike Rose’s scores got switched and his parents didn’t know the consequences of the schools’ actions. Mike Rose took an admission test to find out where he would be placed in the school system, there was another child with the last name Rose. Apparently this other child had done poorly on his admissions test, being placed in a vocational school. While the author Rose had done well enough to get into a standard school. The two children’s scores got switched so the author Rose got placed in the vocational school. “The other Rose apparently didn't do very well, for I was placed in the vocational track, a euphemism for the bottom level.”. Rose and his family were unware of the scores being switched, and they didn’t realize what this meant for Rose and his future. The school should have taken action on this problem by switching the scores back and placing the two children in the programs they tested into originally. The lack of ethics fuels a sense of superiority in product users through brutal subjugation of those who don’t use them. In this society, violent imagery is commonplace and immoral behavior is encouraged to sell products. Society pardons characters like Kevin for their actions because they are winners who are propagating the consumerist message (they help sell the product). This vindication is further illustrated in the third vignette when an orange’s polite questioning of a Slap-of-Wack bar is answered by violent stabbing.
Jack MacFarland pushed Rose and recognized the greatness within Rose. When MacFarland discovered that Rose was put into Vocational Ed in error, he had Rose transferred to College Prep classes. Through doing this MacFarland gained Rose’s trust. Rose respected and looked up to MacFarland. MacFarland become more than just a teacher, he became someone that Rose trusted and a mentor.

The preacher that Edwards was that,“The Puritan preacher Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) relies heavily on the use of repetition in order to impress upon his audience the urgency of redemption from sin. His style is very unique in all of his writings, and different from other authors. Pitts mostly focuses on the outbreak of the daily news. In Niccolo Machiavelli's book, The Prince (1513), he evaluates on how a prince can be a successful leader. Machiavelli’s purpose of this guidebook was to construct his argument to the rising ruler Giuliano de Medici for when he comes to power in Florence. He adopts a casual but authoritative tone in order to convince the prince that Machiavelli’s evaluation on how to be the best prince, is the right thing for the prince to do without coming off as he knows more than the prince or is trying to intimidate him.. Machiavelli’s reference to previous rulers and whether their tactics failed or succeeded helps to benefit his credibility along with his allusion to historic text. He appeals to our logic by simply stating a prince can only do what is within his power to control, and his use of an analogy furthers his argument.
A recent study released by Pearson that questioned over 400,000 students in grades 6-12 shows that only “48% of students think their teachers care about them…and only 45% of students think teachers care if they are absent from school” (Hare, 2015). This shocking statistic demonstrates what American students think about their teachers. Most students are under the impression that their teachers don’t care about them. When teachers don’t care about their students and allow them to fail, many students with unrealized potential give up on education. Mike Rose’s “I Just Wanna Be Average” describes his journey through high school on the vocational track after the results of his “tests got confused with those of another student named Rose” (Rose, 1989, p. 2).

He explains in a more detailed fashion why the students end up behaving so uninterestingly towards anything academic. This appeal is also logical in the sense of following the mind process of a student in a remedial class; from wanting to learn something new, to telling him or herself “Why bother?” and giving up on school. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability.
