Michelangelo was a sculptor, painter, and architect from the Italian Renaissance period. He is considered to be one of the greatest artists of all time and has many well-known pieces. He worked with many different styles of art, including frescoes and sculptures. Many of his pieces have mythological or classical themes. A few of Michelangelo’s most famous and world-renowned pieces were the Pieta and the statue of David. Michelangelo was one of the talented artist of the Renaissance period and of modern history. Michelangelo was born in Caprese, Italy on March 6, 1475. He was born into a family who had a background in banking, but his father learned rather quickly that he was not interested in the financial business and offered to apprentice him to Ghirlandaio, a master fresco painter. After only a year into his apprenticeship, he moved into the palace of the Florentine ruler, Lorenzo the Magnificent, to study sculpture in the Medici Gardens. It is a 17 foot marble statue that depicts the biblical hero, David. Another one of his more famous works is the Pieta which is located in Vatican City. The sculpture depicts Jesus on his mother Mary’s lap after the Crucifixion. This is the only piece of artwork that Michelangelo ever signed. The Last Judgment is a fresco that Michelangelo painted on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel. This fresco took four years to complete and depicts God’s final judgment of all humanity. Michelangelo also painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and one of the most famous pieces that is painted on it is The Creation of Adam. This fresco illustrates God breathing life into Adam.
