Michael P. Lynch's 'True To Life Why Truth Matters'

The perception of prisoner radicalization is an extrusive issue and as of recently, has quickly developed itself as a growing concern in the United States. Prisoner radicalization manifests within the enigmatic subgroups of prison inmate gangs and radical elucidations of religious values which overtime, stimulate the formulation principles based upon fanaticism, abhorrence and violence (Hamm, 2017). Currently, our government is unaware of the actual extent of the issue regarding terrorist’s impacts on prison inmates. However, many of the scholars and experts in prisoner radicalization through terrorist influence, believe that immediate attention needs to be focused in this area, further improving upon our understanding of the growing potential threat.

In Richard Wright’s “The Ethics of Living Jim Crow,” an autobiographical sketch, Wright an African-American man, describes his experiences during Jim Crow and more importantly because of Jim Crow. Richard Wright’s work is heavily based on writings that relate to race. Wright grew up in the South of the United States where Jim Crow was far more intense and notable than other places in the United States. Throughout his piece, Wright uses different appeals such as the pathological appeal and self-experiences in order to convey the severity of living in Jim Crow by using expressive and informative methods. Wright’s argument develops through examining the causes and effects of living in Jim Crow, juxtaposition by relating the experiences to other things which hold similar resonance and overall defining what it meant to live in Jim Crow through learning experiences.

Chapter One: My Story In the very beginning of this book, the author, Josh Dowel, relates a story from his childhood in which he couldn’t find satisfaction from his church, and thereby abandoned attending church. He quotes a country saying “when something doesn’t work, get rid of it” as a way of explaining his attitude toward church, and consequently, religion. Later in this chapter, Dowel explains a revelation which led him to once again explore Christianity. He realized a valuable truth: Jesus Christ and religion are two separate entities.

On the first DVD of “The Truth Project” small group study, Del Tackett considers the subject of truth. He defines “truth” as conformity to fact or reality. In that study, Del tells us that we all suffer from common insanity. “Sanity” is being in touch with reality. “Insanity” is losing touch with reality.

After the attack on the World Trade Centers in 2001, conspiracies began to fly, fingers were being pointed, and accusations were being made. Nine years after the attack, Omar Ashmawy wrote an essay “Ten Years After 9/11. We’re Still in the Dark” to the Washington Post. In his essay, he argues that US citizens are not well enlightened on the cultures of the Islamic and Arabic people and that ignorance gets in the way of obtaining a healthy relationship with Arab and Muslim countries. With his wise use of pathos, logos, and ethos, Ashmawy creates a well written essay that captures the heart of his readers and gives an inspiring glimpse into the effects of 9/11.

Safi also made it known that terrorism is happening everywhere. However, the world only seems to care when it takes place in a major city, or cities in the West. In order to beat this problem, the world must open their hearts and “let the light permeate us,” (Safi, par. 36). Sadly, in today`s world, any religious violence that occurs is immediately associated with Islam. Many people in the world isolate Muslims because of the fear that all Muslims are bad.

A larger, more intimidating threat still is the knowledge of domestic terrorists unaccounted for. Titled under “Intelligence Crisis,” Schwarz writes openly about the ongoing misconduct from “numerous agencies, including the FBI, CIA and NSA” (5). He appeals to a vast majority by recognizing that the world is changing; and calls for a “new and comprehensive nonpartisan investigation”

Following the attacks of the World Trade Center the September 11, 2001, President George W. Bush pronounced a speech standing ''enemies of freedom committed an act of war'', claiming they, the American citizens, were facing a ''war on terror'', and ''the only way to defeat terrorism as a threat to our way of life is to stop it, eliminate it, and destroy it where it grows'' (President George W. Bush, address to a Joint Session of Congress and the American people, September 20, 2001). Therefore, in order to justify their action, a global military campaign in the Middle-East, the American government ''has to persuade society that such an undertaking is necessary, desirable and achievable'' (Jackson:1). According to R. Jackson, little attention had been given to the role of language and discourse in the construction of the ''war on terrorism'' (Jackson: vi), hence this book plays an important role in addressing the issue of the official language of counter-terrorism.

In Nothing But The Truth by Avi Philip Malloy 9th grader hums/sings to the Star Spangled Banner recording in homeroom. Homeroom teacher Ms.Narwin follows the rules and the rule is or the recording is that you have to be silent. So after the second time of asking to stop, Philip gets sent out and refuses to apologize for being a ‘disturbance’ or according to Philip it was being patriotic. So it was either apologize and return to class, or get suspended. He chose suspension.

Gork & Kilcullen become concerned about radical ideologies after 9/11 attack and look for ways how to counter similar attacks. During the article, ? Who?s winning the Battle for Narrative? Al-Qaida versus the United States and Its Allies?, the authors are concerned the West is losing the battle due to poor communication with the Muslim world. They recognize the communication problem and suggest from a single counter-narrative to communicate to specific audiences (Gork & Kilcullen, 2009, pg.

The war against terrorists of global reach is a global enterprise of uncertain duration. America will help nations that need our assistance in combating terror. And America will hold to account nations that are compromised by terror, including those who harbor terrorists— because the allies of terror are the enemies of civilization.... We will seek to deny them sanctuary at every turn.” The "war on terrorism" is merely viewed by many as ideology of fear and promotes violence, rather than strengthening security and working towards the mitigation of terrorism.

In our project we will be analyzing the media’s rhetoric of the “war on terror” and the word terrorism. We will also be examining how this rhetoric forms our perception of the word terrorist. Our goals are to explore different aspects in the rhetoric surrounding terrorism and their effects on the viewer 's perception. We will focus on three different topics and each group member will be tasked with mastering one. The first topic will focus on the use of the term terrorist in reference to select individuals.

Introduction Religious terrorism - is the most dangerous form of terrorism based on religious fanaticism. This phenomenon threatens not only the Middle East but also States that are far beyond the areas traditionally associated with the religion of the Prophet. (Mozaffari 2005, pp.34-36). One of the key actors in the Middle East was Osama bin Laden. With vast resources, bin Laden financed the Taliban.
