In the Greek literary work Apology written by Plato, Socrates was convicted for refusing to recognize the gods recognized by the state, introducing new divinities and corrupting the youth. It is believed by many critics that Socrates knew he was going to be sentenced to death so, he was able to use his defense as an opportunity to clear his reputation, confront his accusers, but most significantly instruct the Athenians. He wanted them to look into themselves and seek virtue and wisdom before looking into personal interests. We notice throughout Socrates’ defense that there is a continued theme of wisdom and teaching towards the Athenians.

While this statement is a very interesting philosophical point, and one that will be addressed later for now this paper will ask “What does that philosophical point have to do with his innocence” Socrates claims to be wise, and his basis for saying so is, paradoxically, that he did not think himself wise. This paradox faces the jurors with a decision. Is Socrates wise or a fool? If he is wise, then he is not poisoning the minds of the youth, is not being impious, and is not guilty. In either case he should be tried as innocent.

I believe that Socrates may be guilty of trying to corrupt the young people because he did encourage them to ask questions and not follow others’ blindly. Socrates did not overtly challenge the gods and their word, however he did encourage people, especially young people, to make their own opinions based on various information, and, in the end, follow their own thoughts. I feel as though the types of questions Socrates was asking were not harmful because he was only testing Euthyphros on how he knew all of his facts, and wanted proof of his opinions. Therefore, I believe people should question, should analyze information, and should form their own judgments rather than listening to someone else’s opinion and blindly following that

Socrates is quoted as stating, “An unexamined life is a life not worth living” (38 a). Socrates was a founding figure of western philosophy, and a stable for many ideas. He lived in Athens, Greece teaching his students, like Plato, questioning politics, ethical choices, and many other things in Greek society.
