The English colonist who settled in Massachusetts received assistance at first from the local Indians tribes, but by 1675 there had been friction between the English and the Indians for many years. On June 20 of that year, Metacomet, whom the colonists called Philip, led the Wampanoag tribe in the first of a series of attacks on the colonist settlements. The war, known today as King Philip’s War, raged on for more than a year and left three thousand Indians and six hundred colonist dead. Metacomet’s attempt to retain power in his native land failed.
