Metacomet's War: Friction Between The English And The Indians

In The Great Indian debate, there were two debaters, Mary Rowlandson and Benjamin Franklin. These two people had polar opposite views on the native population in puritan american. Mary Rowlandson was captured and held by native americans for close to eleven weeks during King Phillip’s war. Mary R. published a book titled The Sovereignty and Goodness of God: Being a Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson, six years after she was released. In her writings she describes how she was captured and her children 's life as well as her own during her captivity.

Tribal Sovereignty The article by Thomas Kaplan for the New York Times, titled “Iroquois Defeated by Passport Dispute”, is about the Iroquois national lacrosse team being denied entry into Britain for an international competition using their tribal passports. The reason for this, given in the article, is that Iroquois passports are not made with current technology that protect against fraud. Kaplan describes how the team officials are stuck in a last minute back-and-forth with the British government to acquire visas for the players. The author relates the incident to the ongoing issues in the United States regarding recognition of sovereignty of Native American nations.

On February 12, 1675, Lancaster, New England was attacked by Native Americans. The English kept buying the Native Americans’ land, and would not allow them to hunt on their land. They were starving, so they began to fight for their land. During the attack, twelve people were killed and twenty-four people were captured. Mary and three of her children were among the twenty-four that were taken.

The Second Anglo-Powhatan War was fought from 1622 until 1632, pitting English colonists in Virginia against the Algonquian-speaking Indians of Tsenacomoco, led by Opitchapam and his brother (or close kinsman) Opechancanough. After the First Anglo-Powhatan War (1609–1614), which ended with the marriage of Pocahontas and John Rolfe, the English colony began to grow. The headright system begun in 1618 granted land to new immigrants who, in turn, sought to make their fortunes off tobacco. As English settlements pressed up the James River and toward the fall line, Indian leaders devised a plan to push them back and, in so doing, assert their supremacy over the newcomers.

A very interesting time after the French and Indian War. There were a lot of things that caught my attention in this chapter. One being the fact that the French and local tribes worked together to fight the British as well as trade and supply one another for survival. Another was how Pontiac’s Rebellion and the Paxton Boys’ were early American race wars. It is not surprising that no one could identify or wanted to identify any of the murderers from the Paxton Boys.

Metacomet, a.k.a King Philip, screamed his first cry in Massachusetts some time in 1638 amongst a fraternity of local natives such as the Narraganset and Wampanoag tribes and subsequent son of Massasoit. He later became successor as sachem, after the bereavement of his father and brother. Metacomet realized the warrant required to become sovereign the natives would have to distance themselves from the colonists. He felt obligatory to sign an armistice in exchange for relinquishing the weapons that the natives had traded land for from the colonists. King Philips character ultimately led to the colonists to disparage him in every way; however, perceptions of him kept the colonist on their toes in excess of a decade.

The experience of the IROQUOIS CONFEDERACY in current-day northern New York provides a clear example of the consequences of the Revolution for American Indians. The Iroquois represented an alliance of six different native groups who had responded to the dramatic changes of the colonial era more successfully than most other Indians in the eastern third of North America. Their political alliance, which had begun to take shape in the 15th- century, even before the arrival of European colonists, was the most durable factor in their persistence in spite of the disastrous changes brought on by European contact. In document A, “King Philip’s Perspective” King Philip stated, “the English made them drunk and then cheated them ; that now, they had no hope left to keep any land.” Both authors in both documents wrote that King Philip lost land from the colonists. In document B, “Colonists‘ Perspective” Edward Randolph said, “God is punishing them for their behavior."

The Pequot war began during the mid-1630’s. The war began with the English religious radicals or better known as the ‘Puritans.’ The Puritans took over the Indian land as a “waste ground.” Alfred A. Cave states that it is a matter of record that the English assaulted the Pequot’s after the failure of efforts to persuade them to apprehend and surrender to Puritan justice. The Pequot War is one of the most important events in early American history, being the matter of records that the English assaulted the Pequot’s during 1636-37.

Class, One reason for the defeat of the Plains Indians was the decline of the buffalo herds, due to the killing by white hunters. The buffalo was one of the most sacred things to the Native Americans, but was their main source of supplies, because they used every part of the buffalo to help them. Second are the former Indian lands being settled by homesteaders, because this reduced the ability of tribes to migrate freely through the plains. This also did not allow the Indians to hunt for more buffalo herds. Lastly was the hostile encounter with the US Army which provided a few victories for the Indian population although Sitting Bull and the Indians fought stunning battles such as the defeat of the US Calvary at Little Big Horn, in the end

Historians who practice historiography agree that the writings from the beginning of what is now known as the United States of America can be translated various ways. In James H. Merrell’s “The Indians’ New World,” the initial encounters and relationships between various Native American tribes and Europeans and their African American slaves are explained; based on Merrell’s argument that after the arrival of Europeans to North America in 1492, not only would the Europeans’ lives drastically change, but a new world would be created for the Native Americans’ as their communities and lifestyles slowly intertwined for better or worse. Examples of these changes include: “deadly bacteria, material riches, and [invading] alien people.” (Merrell 53)

Lepore found the account of Mary Rowlandson of February 10, 1676 powerful, describing the day Nipmuc come into her town killing everyone and taking people as captives. Lepore found interesting was the concern the English had was that they had lost everything that they had created. After the war when everything was destroyed in a way the colonist no longer owned the land. What the colonists did to make reconcile themselves was to turn to God for an answer on why the war happen. The colonists figured that God had brought this war upon them due to their sins, some colonists believed that God was abandoning them and punishing them.

The French-Indian War of 1754-1763 resulted in political, ideological, and economic alterations within Britain and its American colonies. The French and Indian War, also referred to as The Seven Years War, began with British and French conflicts across the Ohio River Valley, as both nations wanted to claim the land for themselves. The first blood of the French-Indian War began with multiple British failures, including Washington’s dreadful defeat at Fort Necessity and General Braddock’s failed attempt at conquering Fort Duquesne, in which he died along with two-thirds of his army (Document C). The British would, however, gain momentum in 1759 with multiple victories, including their most significant triumph, Quebec.

The Yamasee War When the colonist settled in North America, conflict with the Native Americans began and they never ended. The Yamasee War was one of many conflicts. The Yamasee was a bloody war that killed over 400 colonist in South Carolina. The colonist vigorously stole, lied, and forced the Yamasee into slavery. To not be viewed as weak the Yamasee raided the colonist homes and plantations to kill and destroy them and their property.
