Melba Pattillo Beals is a young colored girl who her and a group of friends called "LR9" go to an all white high school called "Central High". Melba with her skin color different, gets a rough life through the process. She got bullied everyday walking up and down the hallways. She kept a diary and wrote down everything that happened each day. She would get advise and have conversations with her grandma. Her grandma keeps her going when she wants to quit. I personally don’t have as bad challenges. I also over exaggerate a lot over something small. Reading this made me realize you should always be grateful for what you have. Melba did not feel safe with the troops and was constantly harassed and attacked by students during school. She was spat on, beaten, called repulsive insults. Teachers and the school administration, did nothing except enabled this behavior to persist, leaving Melba on her own to defend herself. Melba desperately wants to return back to her life before the integration started. She is unable to leave the house because her family is afraid she may be attacked.
Warriors Don’t Cry, is the story of Melba Pattillo Beals, a 15 year old girl who was among the first 9 black children to integrate Central Little Rock high school after the Brown Vs. Board of Education court case ruled that Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas would be integrated in 1954. Warriors Don’t Cry was written by Melba Pattillo Beals herself, describes her struggles and experiences of not just her year at Central High but also her entire life. Melba being only 15 was the youngest out of the Little Rock nine, had to spend the majority of her teenage years dealing with the abuse of her white classmates. Melba is the eldest child of her parents Lois and William Pattillo.

She had lost all her old friends, but she made new ones and stayed strong.
Melba shares her story and what she did to overcome the intense obstacles that tried to prevent her from an equal education. Beals was interviewed about her memoir and is quoted saying "Until I am welcomed everywhere as an equal simply because I am human, I remain a warrior on a battlefield that I must not leave. I continue to be a warrior who does not cry but who instead takes action. If one person is denied equality, we are all denied equality. "

The Secret Life of Bees is a novel about a girl, named Lily, who escapes from her home to end up in a house filled with black people. During her stay there you read the challenges Lily faces and how she comes to understand colored people. This book is a great description of the discrimination that colored people endured, for the novel took period during the passing of the Civil War Act, includes samples of Jim Crow, explains a young girl's perspective on colored people, and shows how far colored people have gotten to gaining more freedom. To begin, the Secret Life of Bees took place in 1964, right when the Civil Rights Act was passed. This act abolished discrimination founded on race, religion, sex, etc.

Why do you want to participate in the Bridges Summer Program? Participating in the Bridges Summer Program will help me greatly in the transition between high school and college. Reading about the program I have learned that this program is meant to help students transition to a college-level work environment and I know that I need this type of help. The good thing about this program is that they help students individually and this way students will have a better chance at really being prepared to start college in the fall.
