Fat acceptance: A basic primer Critique essay Cynara Geissler’s article “Fat Acceptance: A Basic Primer” was first published in Geez Magazine in 2013. Geissler addresses a lot of issues about fat acceptance and how it is affecting our society and people’s attitudes towards over-weight people. One of the reasons why Geissler thinks that is because many health industries now days have a slogan “Thinner is better” and that makes over-weight people seem lazy or just not willing to put the effort to become better. Most importantly Geissler mentions that health industries and causing people to make a negative attitude towards overweight people which can be seen.

Culture is different for many different people. There are many cultures in the world and how everyone’s culture aspects are different depending on your upbringing and your family’s lifestyle is. Culture can be looked at many different ways. Such as food, clothing, language, and many other aspects. Culture can be different for everyone and some people don’t really embrace there culture but on the other hand some people really embrace their culture.

Each person has their own unique culmination of experiences that make up their life. These experiences are the knowledge basis for one’s perceptions and therefore, affects how they interact with others and the world in numerous ways. A person’s background influences the way they view their own capabilities, future, and education as well as how they perceive other cultures. As a result, one’s cultural background and experiences predominantly affects how they view the world. A person’s past experiences affects how they see a certain place or culture.

Every day we use our culture. Whether it be to argue claims, express opinions, or make decisions, culture plays a part in each area. Culture is who we are, one’s identity, its extent is enormous over our views and actions. A person grows up surrounded with culture at a young age. This can affect how they learn and what they learn.

Without the knowledge of what culture is and does, we as a society would be lost. In the essay, “An Indian Father’s Plea” by Robert Lake, the author takes to explain to his audience that your culture can greatly impact your perspective of others. For example, when the teacher Wind-Wolf a slow learner, the father writes a letter explaining why wind-wolf is not, but in fact the opposite. The author said “If you ask him how many months there are in a year he will probably tell you 13. He will respond this way not because he does not know how to count, but because he was taught by our traditional people.”

Culture impacted my personality and how I act and feel. To me, culture is a very important part of every person’s life. Culture can influence my different types of values. My mom practices Mormon and my dad is Catholic and because of this circumstance, I grew up with both beliefs. In my family on Christmas, we celebrate the Birth of Christ.

Family builds a person to be the way they are today, without it every person would be ultimately a different person because family passes their beliefs and other things on from generation to generation. In the book How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, the reader follows a Dominican family with four girls that is forced to move to the U.S. Throughout being in the U.S. the four girls struggle with many things because of the difference in culture. The book talks about the struggles and transformations the girls go through as they adapt to their new lives in the United States. Along the way, each of the girls experiences something that is different from their culture that was passed on to them from generation to generation.

Culture affects our behavior which influences the way each and everyone thinks, therefore it affects one’s success. Culture legacies can sometimes be dangerous as Gladwell describes when he explained the cultural legacy through airplane crashes focusing on the Korean Air accidents during the 1990’s. In addition to gaining the opportunity to receive experience, someone successful also benefits from one’s cultural legacy (Gladwell 182). Gladwell explains how Asian cultures reward hard work more than other cultures. Most Asian cultures cultivate rice and rice farmers are known to work harder than any other farmers.

Even though growing up with two different cultures have its benefits, the challenges outweigh them and can potentially bring negative impacts on someone’s quality of life. Ni-Kan finally stood up for herself. She decided and accepted that she couldn 't become who her mom wanted her to become a “prodigy”. She didn 't want to be a part of that culture of being this amazing artist or actor that her mom wants her to be part of and ever since then Ni-Kan didn 't look at her mom the same or the prodigies. Wind-Wolf, a young and innocent Indian boy is struggling to fit in as he’s being torn apart between white culture and his own Indian culture. Having recently transferred to a new school, Wind-Wolf is trying to adapt to the new culture while holding on to his own. As his father describes to his teacher, “My Indian child is a slow learner... It takes time to adjust to a new cultural system and learn new things”(2). Wind-Wolf’s father is telling the teacher that she should try to be be patient with Wind-Wolf because he needs time getting used to this new and strange educational environment.

Definition of the word worldview can vary greatly, ranges from “we are all what we think” which has been inspired by Buddha, to a more current view being that it is a set of assumptions and beliefs that have an all-powerful effect , both on cognition and behavior. In brief, worldview influences and impacts the way a person view their surroundings, their lives as well as other people in their environment (Sue & Sue, 2003). Culture is only a single word that besets a plethora of categories which can influence a person’s thoughts, beliefs, actions and morals. Enclosing a myriad of life experiences, family values and lessons into a single word is quite a challenge. I am a product of Italian American culture.

Due to the constant contact between various people of the nation, there is some kind adaptation of one kind of culture from other. The impact of such contribution of culture is known as the culture legacies. Each national history and culture unfolds in its own particular way. Sometimes it could be the explanation for people’s previously inexplicable behaviors. In Chapter six of Outliers, Gladwell claims that cultural legacies “play such a role in directing attitudes and behaviors that we cannot make sense of our world without them”(175).
