“When I was your age, I was out in the backyard playing ball with the kids that lived in the neighborhood, making mud pies and staying out until the streetlights came on.”, the grownup would say. Conversations of such go on each and everyday and tends to make some wonder. Have childhoods been ruined? Children are no longer at the park playing tag or climbing the monkey bars. They are instead scrolling through their feed on Instagram, snapchatting their friends and condensing their thoughts into 140 characters. Porn, which used to be hidden and private, can now be accessed with the touch of a few buttons. This introduces children into very bizarre content that they shouldn’t have access to until they are grown. Julie, a 14 year old girl, was blackmailed into sending explicit images and videos to someone online who she thought she knew. She now wears deep, dark red stripes on both of her wrists from attempting to commit suicide because she was being cyberbullied. The internet opens the door for pedofiles and rapists into the homes of children. Once upon a time, people had to actually go out into the world to scream “stranger danger”. However, in today’s society there is a 14 year old Jake who in actuality is 43 year old Ronnie that is getting personal information out of children and preying on them. This can lead to rape, sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy and even suicide. The last way the internet is ruining childhoods is causing cyber bullying. There are so many kids posting selfies online and flipagrams. While there are so many other kids commenting mean and hateful comments under the pictures of these children. Cyberbullying can cause emotional and physical stress. In which both can have a major impact on a child’s childhood by causing them to become self conscious and
In “Violent Media is Good for Kids” Gerard Jones persuades concerned parents that violent media is more beneficial than harmful by appealing emotionally to them through a story about his childhood, establishing his authority, citing a trusted source, using empowering diction, and sharing a story about his son. The first paragraph begins with, “At 13 I was alone and afraid.” This creates pity for Jones. Parents imagine an adolescent boy, lost in the juvenile world, maybe in a situation comparable to that of their own child.
In the essay, “Violent Media Is Good for Kids”, writer Gerard Jones argues against parents and teachers by saying that violence is good for kids. Jones argues that violent media whether it be video games, movies, Television, or comic books is good for kids. Kids are often taught both in school and at home that violence is never the answer and cooperation was always better than resorting to violence because violence always leads to more violence. Jones starts off by describing the way he was raised by his parents. “At 13, I was alone and afraid.
In the article Violent Media Is Good For Kids, the author Gerard Jones claims media violence helps out children overcome problems. Jones uses several examples to back up his theory, such as his childhood and how violent media made positive changes to his life. As Jones stated he was “…afraid and alone”. Once he was introduced to violence through comic books, he immersed himself in them, leading to a fearless and social person. According to Jones “...people pulling themselves out of emotional traps by immersing themselves in violent stories”.
In the passage “Violent Media Is Good For Kids” written by Gerard Jones, Jones claims that violence through comics, toys, and the media helps kids to cope with everyday issues. The reason Jones feels this way is because as a child he was taught that violence was ba,d and he did not have a very good experience with coping with his fears. Jones argues that the Hulk helped him through tough times, that his own son using characters to overcome obstacles, and how violence can avoid some negative feelings. In the beginning of the passage, Jones talks about how he was told to stay away from violence as a child, which at first did not help him till he met the hulk.
All children are different so it is the parent’s responsibility to determine whether or not their children can handle the different media. Some media critics believe that violent cartoons, video games, movies etc. are good for children. Gerard Jones gives an example in his essay “Violent media is good for kids” which he explains how violent media can be good for children, Jones explains his point by giving an example of his son. Jones tells how he exposed his son to marvel comics which helped him in his kindergarten experience. The marvel characters gave Jones’s son the desire of “transforming himself into a bloodthirsty dinosaur to embolden himself for the plunge into preschool” (373).
Within Ellison’s article, she depicts an unfortunate scenario that the majority of parents are significantly apprehensive about, their own child being exposed to the negative realm of the internet world. Ellison
The growing and changing modern culture of today is affecting children in a negative way potentially ruining their development. Pop culture, technology, and the media all contribute to the corruption of children growing up in today’s modern society. The advances of today’s culture is deteriorating children’s minds and exposing them to information unsuitable for their age. Nevertheless, some critics argue that children are simply experiencing a new fresh society in which they are more connected to each other and exposed to more knowledge than ever before. As the time changes so does the culture and we should all embrace this change, disregarding whether it is beneficial or not.
However, many off turn a blind eye to the negative impact it has and will continue to have on society. For instance, although the ability to share images and videos with loved ones instantaneously regardless of where they are in the world is amazing; a simple oversight in the privacy settings could potentially place those pictures and/or videos in the wrong hands, which could be used to bully. In fact, “the depression and anxiety from cyberbullying are significant and have been the cause of many suicides in America” (Richards, Caldwell, & Go, 2015). Therefore, it is imperative that social media is not only monitored, but usage is
In recent years, the Internet has expanded to people all over the world giving them abilities to gain information on any region in the world. However, issues have arisen on the basis of pornographic exposure to children, censorship of material given to the people in the society by leaders of their country, and terrorist acts through the Internet. As a result, there is controversy as to whether censorship and control is needed to ensure that morals and ethics are still in place for children. Since the Internet can be seen as a portal that generates many complicated problems, parents feel as if the Internet should be controlled for their children.
