Martin Luther: The Man Who Changed Church History

Martin Luther and his followers seized the right to read and interpret the bible in a new way, that paid the way for Reformation. Martin Luther challenged the church. He criticized the churches ideas and practices. He sought no revolution, but he tried to persuade church leaders to make reforms. Luther believed that gods free gift of forgiveness did not depend on taking sacriments or performing good deeds.

His major objection about his church are the indulgences because he knew that they were false. “Indulgences were payments to the Roman Catholic Church in return for pardons for one’s sins and grants of salvation in the afterlife.” Martin Luther stated that he didn’t approve of indulgences because they were false as well as expensive, so he didn’t want people to buy meaningless pieces of papers. Luther believed that getting rid of your sins with paper was not the right thing to be doing and that the church had been receiving money for lying. He said that the people who buy these indulgences will be “eternally damned” with those who taught them.

This is to clarify to the people the exact knowingness of their religion. When he went around visiting various churches he began to notice that no matter where he went most everyone had been baptized and were receiving the body and blood of Christ, yet they didn’t even know the Our Father, the Ten Commandments, or the Creed. This was very hurtful to Luther. He knew that all of these people were taking their Christian liberty for granted, and he wanted to put an end to this. It was not the peoples fault per say, but they weren’t able to get help.

Martin Luther Martin Luther was one of two of the greatest leaders of the reformation along with John Calvin. The Reformation was the period in the 16th century (1571-1648) where the was a cultural upheaval the divided the European catholic population. Not only did it create a cultural upheaval it created political and intellectual disruption. Luther believed that the Catholic church was corrupt, his 95 Theses was a list of 95 arguments about the catholic church which he wanted to resolve.

How Martin Luther Has Impacted His Time Period Before Martin Luther became a Catholic monk, his family had him learn to become a lawyer. His family soon became disappointed when he gave up becoming a lawyer and a Catholic priest because he wasted their hard earned money when he dropped out of law school. While he was working under the care of one of the Church’s Fathers, he went to Rome. When he saw how much Rome and the Roman Church had strayed from God's teaching he had to speak up against what was going on. While the Holy Roman Church saw him as a Heretic but, the people of his time saw him start to impact his time period socially, politically, and economically.

The church tried with all of the power it had gained to stop Luther, but power hungry men and pious fools thought him worthy of protection. Within his Ninety-five Theses, he questioned the authority of the Roman Catholic Church and brought to light the corruption surrounding the church while stating how Christianity should be practiced in different ways rather than what is being taught. It is important to understand his stances on religion to explain how different groups reacted to his ideas. While some parts of Europe accepted his ideologies into practice, others reject Luther for many different reasons.
