Watkins was known for his unique style of photography. His photographs were characterized by their large size, sharp detail, and dramatic composition. Watkins used a large-format camera, which allowed him to capture expansive views of the western landscape with remarkable clarity and depth. He was also one of the first photographers to use a tripod, which allowed him to make long exposures and capture the subtleties of light and shadow in his images.
