Jennifer Archibald Creates a Work about Olympian Jackie Joyner Kersee-Analysis Obtaining a renowned reputation of being the first American to ever claim a gold medal in the Olympics’ long jump event is not as simple of a task as it seems- though it was accomplished by a world-record heptathlon holder, Jackie Joyner Kersee (also known as Jacqueline Joyner or Jackie Joyner). Born on March 3rd, 1962 in East St. Louis, Illinois, Jackie Joyner-Kersee strived through poverty, racial discrimination, and tragedy with her athletic talent during most of her childhood. Joyner had won the National Junior pentathlon championships for four consecutive years, permitting her to receive honors in athletics, especially track and field, basketball, and volleyball.

Mary was born on October 13, 1754 and came from a German family who lived in Trenton, New Jersey. Not much was known about her childhood, but she was not taught how to read or write. At the age of 15, she began working as a domestic helper for a family who lived in Carlisle Pennsylvania.

Holocaust survivor Suzanne Butnik, born on the 26th of March year of 1939, born in Budapest, Hungary. According to Suzanne she is an only child to her Mother and Father, she and her Mother lived with her Mother's side of the family. During the war Suzanne explains that her Mother's side of the family was with them during the war in hiding. Shortly after Suzanne and her Mother came to America. Suzanne has a father who decided to immigrate to America when she was a newborn.

3-Madam C.J. Walker-Born Sarah Breedlove on December 23,1867 on a cotton plantatiion near Delta,Louisina,was one of the first American women to become a self made millionare. Both her parents were recently freed slaves and she,the fifth child,was the first to be born in her family to be born free. Her mother passed away in 1874,and her father passed the following year,becoming a orphan at age 7. After her parents passed,she went to live with her sister and borther in law. They moved to Vicksberg,Missippi in 1877.

Molly Ivins was born in Monterey, California in 1944. Her family moved a year after to Houston, Texas where she was raised (Reader 7). While she attends high school, she interns for the Houston Chronicles and is assigned to the Complaint Department (Reader 9). It is in this department that Ivins ' recognizes what customers are interested in reading—what attracts readers, what they expect from journalists’ and their articles (Reader 10). Eventually, Ivins gets a job as a police reporter for the Minneapolis Tribune.

Walker and she was indeed the first woman and Black-American to do so. She has a very interesting story and journey to getting where she was. It’s one of the best stories of someone starting at the bottom, and going all the way to the top.

Lucy is one the most remembered first ladies for all the stuff she did to help this nation. Lucy Hayes was born on August 28, 1831 in Chillicothe Ohio.

Esther Morris Esther Hobart McQuigg was born August 6, 1814 in the state of New York. Orphaned at the age of eleven, she earned her living doing housework for a neighbor. At an early age she started a millinery shop (Urbanek 5). Esther had been an antislavery worker, and, as a dressmaker, a successful businesswomen, and women’s rights advocate in her early twenties. Esther Morris helped build America through culture by redefining women’s rights.

Higgins was born on August 6, 1984 in the passenger seat of her aunt Janet's car. She was born in between Mallard and Emmetsburg while trying to get to the Palo Alto County Hospital. She grew up in a couple of different houses but they were all around the same area in Mallard, Iowa. Throughout

The interviewee Gloria Nipping, is from Church, she’s always gone to 5pm mass on Saturdays ever since I can remember. Her husband Lou, goes fishing with my dad occasionally and so we are in constant contact with each other. Gloria was born in New Orleans, she lived 40 miles out of New Orleans in a small town, and her parish was Saint Charles, parishes were named after different saints. Gloria went to elementary school in a little town, it was a two room school with two teachers and each teacher had four classes, it was segregated. Gloria stated, “I was in a time when things were segregated.”

(Hook). Mary Cecilia Rogers, whose body was discovered on July 28, 1841 in the waters along New Jersey shore created enough sensation to be in the annals of New York City history. Newspapers and books were made, talking about the disappearance and death of Mary Rogers. One of the most popular book written about Mary was called “The Mystery of Marie Roget” by Edgar Allan Poe with the help of Auguste Dupin. It took a lot of trials and errors, but it was never figured out to how Mary had died.

Nancy Hart A frontierswoman in Georgia during the American Revolution who should be seen as one of the most important women of the time, is Nancy Hart. She is an unsung hero whose mission was to get rid of Loyalists in Georgia’s territory. Hart was also a spy for the Patriot army and is very well known in Georgia but not as much in other parts of the United States. She is unsung because so little was documented about her early life and most people showed interest in her towards the end of her life and after she died. Also many courageous actions she took do not have specific details or they are told in different ways.

On March 30, 2008, eight teenagers attacked a sixteen year old cheerleader, Victoria Lindsay. This attack took place in Lakeland, Florida around 8:30 pm. This girl fight seen around the world would become known as the Mulberry Eight. This attack all started because Victoria Lindsay was trash talking on her MySpace page.

Mary was truly a stunningly smart, intelligent, and brave person. Her name was Mary Jane when she was born. It’s not known when she was born, but it was a bit of time before May 17, 1846. It is documented of her being baptized on that date at St. John’s Episcopal in Richmond, Virginia. Mary has been believed to have been born in the late 1830s or early 1840s.

Amy Tan is a Chinese-American author who was born on February 19, 1952, in Oakland, California. In Tan’s early life she had many struggles because her parents desired for her “to hold onto Chinese traditions and her own longings to become more Americanized” (Encyclopedia). While she wanted to become a writer when she was still young, her parents wanted her to become a neurosurgeon. When she got older and went to college she majored in English then started her career in the 1970’s. She was a technical writer and then started writing fiction stories.
