In our daily life, conflict is a nature part of human relationship which cannot be avoided. It can be a good or bad thing which may depend on how you handle it. If people put effort to deal with it, it can provide you an opportunity to understand more about each other. Otherwise, it may affect the relationship between both parties. However, people with different cultural background will lead to have different leadership styles, which can influence the use of conflict resolution strategies even in the same event and bring various outcomes. As nurses can act as different roles including educators, communicators and managers, they will involve in so many types of interaction with other healthcare professionals which increase the chance for conflict among them (Higazee, 2015). For the causes of conflict that occur in hospitals, they can be related to competition for resource such as staff, financial sectors and space, inadequate communication, and the opposition of opinion, priorities, roles, beliefs, perceptions, practices, authority and values (Finkelman, 2015; Warner, 2001). Managing conflict can be divided into two aspects, one is conflict prevention, another one is resolution of conflict. It is about the degree of a society to tolerate ambiguity (Hofstede, 2011). However, Hong Kong is an uncertainty avoiding country so that the nurses are relying on a stable life that they do not want to make change. Therefore, nurses in Hong Kong are trend to withdraw from or prevent conflict according to this cultural characteristic, since conflict is considered as a threat which may bring a lot of uncertainties such as change of relationship between colleagues.

Throughout countless lives, conflict is regarded as a common fact of life that one must endure. People must learn to handle stress and pressure while also being open to the ideas and feelings of others. Many more people over the years have tried to decipher the best way to deal with these unfortunate happenings and some have come within the smaller measure to achieving the great feat. While this may be a complicated and sinuous road to travel, the benefits of various practices can add amazing improvement to one’s way of living and can even help others in order to benefit all of society. Perhaps the best way to deal with conflict is to simply not give up or not stay silent when conflict and wrongdoings are happening such as in “Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat” by Winston Churchill and in “Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech” by Elie Wiesel and perhaps a closer look must be taken at how these methods affect the situation, how they affect those involved, and how this can help with a person’s emotional well-being.

As humans, we each face conflict in our everyday lives. Conflict is basically anything that happens that a person may disagree with, or not be happy with. Conflict could be something as little as losing your pencil, or something as horrible as the holocaust. For example, Anne Frank was forced into hiding at the age of 13. There was nothing that she could do about it, so she kept her thoughts on the positive side by writing in her diary once or twice a month, and hoping for the best.

It is in observing how people deal with and react to conflicts that we see clear differences between cultures. Some cultures view conflict as a positive thing, while others view it as something to be avoided. In the United States, conflict is not usually desirable; nonetheless, conventional wisdom in this country encourages individuals to deal directly with conflicts when they do arise. In fact, face-to-face encounters are usually suggested as the way to work through whatever problems exist. By contrast, in many Asian countries, open conflict is experienced as embarrassing or demeaning.
When looking at the function of professional nursing, the attitude, experiences, as well as factors such as demographics, social class, education, and values, can determine how the nurse will view violence in the workplace. These factors that have contributed to the development of the professional nurse can also determine how the nurse views and even reacts to workplace violence and aggression towards them. The qualities of the professional nurse and their background can determine how the human behavior from the patient is viewed and can lead to de-escalation or escalation of violent situations. The behavior of the patient can include cooperation, calmness, anxiety, aggression, or anger. Behaviors of aggression, anger, frustration, and acts of intimidation when patients are experiencing an illness can exacerbate stressful situations which can turn violent.
This situation presented an unresolved conflict between myself and the vice principal in my clinical placement. This conflict can be linked with the nursing concepts of interprofessional collaboration and communication, role clarification, and power. Therefore, it is understandable that nursing students working within an interprofessional team that does not demonstrate respect and understanding will result to ineffective care, health promotion delivery, and impede professional development. Interprofessional collaboration amongst health and non-health professionals is integral in optimizing health outcomes and promoting health.
