During the Civil Rights Movement two arguments were led by completely different people that expressed different solutions and ideas towards the problem. These two individuals were Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King gave the speech “I Have a Dream” while Malcolm X gave the speech “The Ballot or the Bullet” that showed their opinions toward the movement. Each speech showed opposite solutions to the ever present problem that faced them. While Dr. King argued for a peaceful solution, and showed this by his syntax and rhetorical language, Malcolm X would argue that violence was necessary in order to achieve the equality that the black community required.

Malcolm X was known as an aggressive activist during the Civil Rights movement during the late 1950’s and mid 1960’s. X, who would change his last name to “Little” for it was given centuries prior by his ancestor’s slave master, was a follower of Elijah Muhammad who is the messenger of Allah. During his years in prison, X was an atheist but regained his faith in God as he joined the nation of Islam. After he was released, he met with Elijah Muhammad in Chicago and became a minister for the Nation of Islam, establishing temples all across the east coast. “America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem,” remarked Malcolm X in this Letter from Mecca in April of 1964 (“Malcolm, X” 1). For the longest time, Malcolm X believed that there was no way White Americans and African Americans could get along as one. He was against everything Martin Luther King Jr. would preach as a civil rights leader. This letter showed an unbelievable change in the man he was and had been previous to his pilgrimage to the Holy city of Mecca. Everything he once believed had completely been wiped away.

Education is Power The Civil Rights Movement took place during the mid-1950s and late 1960s where African Americans protested against the injustice of not receiving the same civil liberties as white Americans. Activists who took part in the Civil Rights Movement, used a non-violent approach to protesting such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Greensboro sit-ins, and the march from Selma to Montgomery in order to bring about equality. African Americans began to receive equality as shown by the implementation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968. In Malcolm X’s, “Learning to Read”, he encourages his audience to learn from his mistakes through stories of his background that reflect his beliefs that under-educated people need to become aware of the less than positive history of the oppression of African Americans if they plan on attaining their freedom.

Malcolm X, who also known as el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz, was a prominent American Muslim human rights activist for those African-Americans in the United States. The book which I have chosen for my book review entitled “Malcolm X Talks to Young people” which comprises all his speeches in United States, Britain and Africa whereby his targeted audience was the youngsters. This book consist of all the original transcripts and excerpts of speeches produced by him to teenagers in the three countries which are the United States, Africa and Britain throughout the last year of his life. In my opinion, Malcolm X Talks to Young People is an immensely relevant and edifying for the youngsters nowadays as it gives impact to those adolescents as they reacted positively to the negotiation and he portrayed himself as the real case on what is actually going on in his country which is in the United States.

Malcolm X “You can’t separate peace from freedom, because nobody can be at peace unless he has his freedom.” These words came from the mouth of Malcolm X, but who was he? Some people call him deranged, others call him too radical. But truthfully, Malcolm X was one of the most influential African Americans in history.

DBQ: Martin Luther King and Malcolm X: Rewrite During the 1960’s there was a greatly increased in violence in America. There were riots, bombings, racism, and discrimination. Many African American were mistreated due to the racist people who intervened the African Americans from doing anything. Two civil rights activists wanted change for African Americans and were both fighting for the same cause, civil rights.

The “I Have a Dream” speech is well known throughout history to be one of the most famous speeches to be on the subject of civil rights. Throughout the entirety of “I Have a Dream”, Dr. King uses pathos more than logos. “We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities.”

MLK’s “I have a dream” speech promoted the idea of integration. He believed that the races were created equal and that blacks should be respected as American citizens. Malcolm X followed Muslim principles and believed that he would protest “by any means necessary.” He would do whatever needed in order to obtain freedom for African-Americans whether it be violence or nonviolent. Malcolm opposed integration and believed that blacks needed to fend for themselves in the fight against whites.

Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most influential leaders of his time and played a crucial role in the African-American Civil Rights movement. Luther was a charismatic leader who took a firm stand against the oppressive and racist regime of the United States (US), devoting much of his life towards uniting the segregated African-American community of the US. His efforts to consolidate and harmonise the US into one country for all is reflected in many of his writings and speeches spanning his career. As a leader of his people, King took the stand to take radical measures to overcome the false promises of the sovereign government that had been addressing the issues of racial segregation through unimplemented transparent laws that did nothing to change the grim realities of the society. Hence, King’s works always had the recurring theme of the unity and strength of combined willpower.

On August 28th, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr gave us one of one of the most rhetorically moving speeches ever given. Titled as the “I Have a Dream Speech,” he read this speech to the “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom”. As a civil right mover he gave this great speech to all Americans (black and white) so that he could give off the idea of equality on the same level. Because of his crowd of mix races King made sure to make his speech imploring to all no matter what the race that they may be. He uses metaphorical imagery, powerful diction,and symbolism to create an impact on the audience.

Malcolm X delivered a powerful speech on April 3, 1964 at the Congress of Racial Equality in Cleveland, Ohio. Black people in America came together to receive motivation to fight for equality. In this speech Malcolm X inspires black people to take a stance and fight for their civil rights. Malcolm X uses rhetorical techniques to persuade his audience to push for equality between races.

“I Have A Dream” “I Have A Dream”, a quote that many Americans hold dear to their hearts and a quote that is remembered and is associated with an unforgettable movement in history of the Untied States of America. From 1954-1968 one of the most memorable movements in history took place and will not be forgotten is the civil rights movement. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the many greats remembered and recognized in the movement for being an influential leader of his time. Having given over 2000 speeches, MLK(Martin Luther King) has one particular speech that stands out from the many and it is his “I Have A Dream” speech. MLK’s message being about peace, unity, fairness and freedom for and to all people shines through in this speech.

Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. were both two African American civil rights activists who were very prominent throughout history. They fought for what they believed in but in vastly different ways. Martin Luther King Jr. was born to a middle class family and was well educated. Malcolm X, on the other hand, grew up in a rather hostile environment with barely enough schooling. Both their speeches, “I Have a Dream” and “The Ballot or the Bullet” may have shared some common traits, but at the same time, differed greatly in various aspects.
