“Malcolm X”
Spike Lee’s “Malcolm X” takes viewers through the life of Malcolm X from the time his mother was pregnant until after his death, when his legacy lives on. This movie captivates the audience in a way that sheds light on the way one person can change someone’s life while also offering insights to the Nation of Islam. At the beginning of this movie, viewers are introduced to Malcolm Little, later to be known as Malcolm X. One of the first people who viewers see change Malcolm’s life is his teacher. This scene displayed the two sitting in the classroom where Malcolm tells his teacher that he wants to be a lawyer. His teacher tells him that being a lawyer is too high of an ambition for him, even if he does have the best grades out of all of his classmates. His teacher proceeds to explain that it would be in Malcolm’s better interest to think about working with his hands as a carpenter. There are many scenes in which Malcolm X is depicted addressing crowds of African Americans on the street as well as in a temple. As he speaks to them he explains that the Nation of Islam was created to empower and unite all Africans and advocate for both segregation and equality. In this movie, it was explained how the Nation of Islam lacked some Islamic teachings. When Malcolm X went on his pilgrimage to Mecca, he ate, drank, and talked with many Muslims who were white. This changed gave him insight on the teaching that Islam is a religion for people of all types to come together, which is the opposite of what the Nation of Islam had been teaching. In Malcolm X’s autobiography, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, he says “All of our experiences fuse into our personality. Everything that ever happened to us is an ingredient” (153). This quote holds true throughout the whole autobiography. Malcolm tells us about his whole life from the time his family suffered through the Great Depression to the time he was fighting for black rights during the civil rights movement. Malcolm goes through many challenges in his lifetime and throughout this book we witness him struggle to get by living on his own and eventually convert to Islam and find his path in life.
Summary of "Learning to Read" by Malcolm X In his essay "Learning to Read" from the chapter "Saved" in Malcolm's Autobiography published in New York (Grove Press, 1965). Malcolm was born in Omaha, Nebraska and his father was a political activist on behalf of Marcus Garvey. After he and his family moved to East Lansing, Michigan, where his father was killed and his mother placed in a mental institution. he became an orphan and ended up on the streets of Detroit where he was known as "Detroit Red".

Some people call him deranged, others call him too radical. But truthfully, Malcolm X was one of the most influential African Americans in history.
Malcolm X 's "A Homemade Education" uncovers a story of how he gained knowledge by himself and how it guided his thoughts and ideas in becoming a more knowledgeable speaker. Although Malcolm X is a very outspoken person about racism in the United States and throughout the world, he had the right to be upset but goes a little overboard on blaming whites. The main focus of "A Homemade Education" by Malcolm X is his endless attempt to increase his knowledge by teaching himself how to fully understand different words of the dictionary. Although he was inspired by a fellow inmate when he was in Charlestown Prison, Malcolm, young as he was back then, began reading intensely but couldn’t understand exactly what he was reading because of his writing and reading skills. Starting from being illiterate, Malcolm X used every resource he had to broaden his language abilities and be able to communicate to the world and his people.
MLK’s “I have a dream” speech promoted the idea of integration. He believed that the races were created equal and that blacks should be respected as American citizens. Malcolm X followed Muslim principles and believed that he would protest “by any means necessary.” He would do whatever needed in order to obtain freedom for African-Americans whether it be violence or nonviolent. Malcolm opposed integration and believed that blacks needed to fend for themselves in the fight against whites.
Malcolm X was an American Muslim leader who contributed to the Civil Rights Movement by spreading his ideas of black nationalism in the 1950s and early ’60s. He was an influential figure in a black Islamic organization, Nation of Islam, and served as a spokesperson for the organization. He was assassinated on February 21, 1965 while making a speech in Harlem. After his death, his life story was made well-known through his autobiography, The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1965) (Mamiya 1). Malcolm X is a man whose background and activism contributed to the Civil Rights Movement and America as a whole.

Therefore, starting on today, we should respect each other, understand others’ beliefs and spread the Islam not by force or not based on the skin color. Besides, in Malcolm X biography, I learnt that, an extraordinary person has an extraordinary characteristics. Like Malcolm X, whenever he has been an orphan at the young age, but he never stop to learn and study. Instead of crying and be depressed with his lost, he continued to study. But, as a human being, he is also easily influenced by what others said about him.
According to X, “The ballot or the bullet”... “Now in speaking like this, it doesn't mean that we're anti-white, but it does mean we're anti-exploitation,we're anti-degradation, we're anti-oppression. And if the white man doesn't want us to be anti-him, let him stop oppressing and exploiting and degrading us”(Malcolm #2). The essence of Malcolm’s argument is that he is not anti white, he is anti whites oppressing and disenfranchising African Americans and if the white person wants to not be hated, then he should stop hating himself. In a letter written in Mecca, Malcolm X says,“on this pilgrimage, what I have seen,and experienced, has forced me to re-arrange much of my thought-patterns previously held, and to toss aside some of my previous conclusions” (Malcolm X).

The authors tone of writing could at first be described as easygoing and unconcerned. He is aware of the obvious issue of racism and discrimination against African Americans, but feels as if it doesn't directly apply to him. Though he is still seen as a controversial figure, I believe that Malcolm X was one of the most compassionate figures in history. He once said, “I believe in human beings, and that all human beings should be respected as such, regardless of their color.” I really admire how he fought for what he believed in. Initially, I learned about Malcolm X in my AP English Language class, but I was reintroduced to his influence on the modern day black society in my college history class. Prior to being reintroduced to his philosophy in my college history class, I thought that X was a violent, racist man.
