After the end of the American Civil War in 1865 our growing country was in desperate need of adjustments. The Union had beaten the Confederacy which left them in charge of how we were going to fix all of the problems in our country at the time. At this time Abraham Lincoln had been killed and new president Andrew Johnson had been chosen. The three major problems that Johnson decided to address and fix was slavery, the rights of the people, and the rights on voting. These problems would be resolved in the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments, also known as the “reconstruction amendments”, of the United States Constitution and they brought profound changes to our nation. The changes that these amendments made were so influential that many people today …show more content…
The first amendment of the “reconstruction amendments” that was instituted in our nation constitution is the 13th amendment, which abolished slavery as a legal institution. Although for our country at the time it was also equally as important for them to define the citizens rights and the voting rights it was even more important that they determine their decision on slavery. Slavery was the main initiator of the American Civil war because it divided the nation into two belief, the Confederacy which thought that slavery should stay because of its help financially and with labor and the Union which thought slavery should be abolished mainly because of morals and also many people in the U.S. at the time just wanted to support the federal government. There are two very good arguments when it came to slavery in the 1860’s. The first one being, supporting the confederacy, the fact that maybe …show more content…
The three amendments that led to the belief of “America’s Second Founding” created a new, more humane, and progressive nation that would become the united nation that we know it as today. The United States was completely changed after the end of the Civil War when the Union and the Confederacy finally joined back together as one nation, but also solely due to the profound changes in the Constitution with the addition of these amendments. The 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments had very profound effects on the United State by abolishing slavery, developing rights of the citizens, and creating voting equality. Although these amendments may have not been immediately accepted or put to use like they were supposed to, but this was a giant and influential step in the development of the country after the Civil
Finally, with the ratification the fifteenth amendment in 1870s, it secured the vote for the African Americans, and it forbid states from denying any citizens from the right to vote based on race, color, or “previous condition of servitude.” These three amendments were significant changes during the Reconstruction period because all people, not just white, can fully enjoy being an American citizen without worrying over their race or
13th- The 13th amendment was the one that freed all the slaves. The civil war was a bing impact of radifiying this amendment and making it a part of the constitution. 18th- The 18th amendment was the one that started proabition. Proabtion basicilly ment that drinking was illigal and it was made a law.
At the time that the Constitutional Convention took place, the North was industrialized and produced many finished goods. The South, however, still had an agricultural economy. Therefore, the South imported many finished goods from Britain. The North wanted the government to be able to impose import tariffs or taxes on finished products. They wanted this to help protect against foreign competition and encourage the South to buy goods made in the North.
After the Civil War, the U.S.A. had to reconstruct itself which means that it basically had to rebuild itself so it could go back into its normal form. While the U.S.A. was going into reconstruction they made many Amendments. But, the most important Amendment did not accomplish its goals. I am talking about the 15th Amendment that was created with purpose to let African Americans vote. But, thankfully one of the Amendments greatly succeeded and that is the 13th Amendment, which greatly succeeded.
As the war developed, he realized that slavery was the main reason between the split of the states. Intelligently, he began supporting the passing of this amendment until it was finally passed by Congress January 31, 1865, and ratified December 6, 1865. It abolished slavery in the United States and was the first of three Reconstruction Amendments established in the five years following the American Civil War. Is it now known that the 13th Amendment served as a the gateway to the 14th and 15th amendments which finally granted African American equal rights.
The Reconstruction took place following the Civil War that helped rebuild the United States, but in many ways the Reconstruction was a war itself with all the pain that came with it. The one of the only differences was that the military conflict no longer existed between the North and the South. The Reconstruction was brought by the Northerners who wanted the Southerners to pay for what they caused and the Southerners who wanted to keep their life the same as before. Nevertheless, the Civil war brought slavery to an end and altered the African-Americans rights by three new Amendments. Abolishing slavery in all states, the Thirteenth Amendment was the first of the three Amendments that brought African-Americans their rights.
America has been through many trying times, and we’ve somehow found a solution for every problem. Some solutions weren’t always the best but in that moment of time they were ‘good enough’. Slavery solved the labor shortage and created a cheap mass workforce for colonial plantations. Freeing the slaves was an attempt to solve post-civil war problems and stitch the nation back together. ‘Separate but equal’ rulings in courts were trying to smooth over the fact that blacks were not equal.
The United States Constitution is one of the only lasting constitutions in history. It has lasted longer than any war and is more contentious than any issue. Depending on your views and values, you may believe that only one amendment made a true impact on society. You could also believe that none of them actually mattered or that many of them influenced society a great deal from 1790 to 1820 and cannot pick just two. I just so happen to be one of the many people who value the First and Sixth Amendments, which are coincidentally the one’s that made a substantial affect on society from the years of 1790 to 1820.
Once Johnson was no longer in charge congress put into place the Civil Rights Act, an act that declared everyone who was born in the United states to be granted a citizen no matter their race or previous conditions. This meant all former slaves could become true legal citizens. Similarly, the 14th amendment made it so that each state was to give equal protection of the laws to everyone because it too declared all citizens were equal. This amendment also would not allow for confederate political leaders to hold positions and it would not forgive any debts of the confederacy. Following the civil rights act and the 14th amendment the 15th amendment and then another civil rights act were also put into effect.
With the beginning of reconstruction the amendment were created to abolish slavery, to give people born in America the right to be citizens and finally the allowance of men of to vote regardless of their race. With these amendments being put into place it cause a lot of kick back from the south and they didn’t agree at with these amendments being put into place. Although it took a while for these amendments to actually be followed it was a big door opener to slaves essentially giving them rights to be
These amendments also provided the building of many churches and helped community organizations to be started. In addition to the amendments the ten Southern state governments were, States Army. This was to recognize and protect the freedmen’s right to vote. Even though the Civil War was considered a “Lost Cause”, it did free the slaves. The Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments helped the slave’s to eventually come to know their potential in life after being ratified.
Imagine a world in which The Civil War and the events after never happened. Southern states still hold slaves, there are no laws on immigration or who can become a citizen. The Civil War freed the slaves and allowed laws that dealt with citizenship and immigration to be ratified. This was what led to the creation of the three Reconstruction Amendments, which includes the Fourteenth Amendment. The Fourteenth Amendment has rich history, various meanings and applications, and can be used to shape our nation for the better today.
One of reasons the confederacy failed was because the U.S. Congress, with Lincoln’s support, proposed the 13th amendment which would abolish slavery in America. Although the confederate peace delegation was unwilling to accept a future without slavery, the radical and moderate Republicans designed a way to takeover the reconstruction program. The Radical Republicans wanted full citizenship rights for African Americans and wanted to implement harsh reconstruction policies toward the south. The radical republican views made up the majority of the Congress and helped to pass the 14th amendment which guaranteed equality under the law for all citizens, and protected freedmen from presidential vetoes, southern state legislatures, and federal court decisions. In 1869, Congress passed the fifteenth amendment stating that no citizen can be denied the right to vote because of “race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”
The thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments were also passed after the end of the Civil War and abolished slavery, but this was all possible due to the first victory at Vicksburg. This battle and all the events that led up to it imposed monumental change in the United
Well the debates over the reconstruction amendments had actually begun before the end of the civil war, therefore President Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, but he wasn't sure that he had the constitutional authority to free the slaves and therefore it was part of his party platform in 1864 that he would pass constitutional amendments abolishing slavery. 16.2). Consider the differences between the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments. What does the Fourteenth Amendment do that the Thirteenth does not?
