As a literary genre, Magical Realism stands with its own methodology. Not adhering to a set of certain rules, realities appear distorted, demonstrating that this style of literature strays from conventional standards of writing. With this, reality conforms to a degree wherein characters behave naturally amidst their environment, despite exposure to the seemingly surreal. Within the genre of Magical Realism, one finds that a variety of elements constitute it, each warping the text in a way of its own. By exploiting this aspect of Magical Realism, authors communicate a broader message than what is written in the text. Of the known elements, metamorphosis stands to be among the exceptionally used. Author Rudolfo Anaya handles this specific feature in Bless Me, Ultima, throughout the entirety of his novel. One particular example can be found in Antonio’s innermost thoughts after his exchange with his father, where he states that “the tragic consequences of life can be overcome by the magical strength that resides within the human heart” (Anaya, 249). The novel, filled with an abundance of surreal occurrences, does not revolve around that certain aspect. On the contrary, the story gives a larger inclination towards the growth of Antonio and his battle with his innermost conflicts. Anaya gives power to an entity already present in the real world, rather than glorifying the supernatural items existing in the work. Likewise, Gabriel Marquez portrays the being of an angel in deplorable conditions in A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings: A Tale for Children. The angel, albeit an uncommon sight, is not a wholly unnatural creature discover. The short story instead concentrates on the old man’s treatment and exploitation, describing that “his only supernatural virtue seemed to be patience” (Marquez, 8). Despite his heavenly origin, the only thing accounted for as being impressive is his ability to withstand the constant abuse by others. Marquez accentuates on what is considered mundane and dismisses any real phenomenal traits attributed to his form as a way to berate the people around him. The townspeople leave the angel in abhorrent conditions, only interested in their own well-being, and it is this which Marquez tries to emphasize. In spite of retaining no real magical power, the villagers seem to behave with greater abnormality than that of the
First off, an angel is found. It is expected that the angel would be young, have beautiful wings, and clean. Instead, the angel is old, has wings that are falling apart, and the angel is found lying in mud, so he is dirty. In Marquez’s short story, it states, “He had to go close very close to see that it was an old man, a very old man, lying face down in the mud, who, in spite of his tremendous efforts, couldn’t get up, impeded by his enormous wings” (Marquez 1). The meaning of this quote is a dirty angel was found in the mud and he could not get up.
Consequently, the readers start to notice more and more repetitive things, such as the “angels” in paragraphs one, two, and nine. Gary depicts these angels following him as “shadows” and never actually saying what they look like. They are the watchers, watching his every move and making him think about his decisions and the people he is affecting. They are there to make sure that if he is one toe out of line, everyone will know. There is also the recurrence of the Christianity theme throughout that relates to the angels as well.

Each story focuses mainly on the way religion impacts a person and how their expectations of the unknown may not always turn out how they anticipated. Tony was unable to find a religion that suited his every belief, he could see the power of the witches, of ultima, and of the golden carp but never saw any physical sign of the power he originally believed in. Father Gonzaga was utterly stunned by the angel in an Old Man with Enormous Wings because all of his priestly teachings and catechism has incorrectly prepared him. The angel is completely different from what he expected, both visually and the level of his powers. He has to go back and consult his superiors leaving the angel with the townspeople.
In the novel, Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquirel, magical realism plays a critical role within the emotional, and physical responses in the book, and the audience. Magical realism helps set the tone throughout the book and allows the audience to empathize, and understand the characters in Like Water for Chocolate. Berger, “magical realism today is often connected to literature, especially Latin American works”( Berger, Bjørn J. Web.) which explains the connection, and involvement in Like Water for Chocolate.

When her son wakes up the next morning he asks if he’s missed the angels whom he thinks visit them during the night. She tells him “‘Darling, the angels have themselves a lifetime to come to us”’ (75). She still thinks that life will get better.
The Ordinary in Magical Realism The events that occur in magical realism seem like very peculiar events compared to events in the real world.. Typical events and people in magical realism, like giants and magic spells, are seen as events or people that would never appear in the ordinary world everyone lives in. The way characters react to magical moments with no fear of the event, makes it seem like it’s all too normal. Ordinary events in magical realism will never be seen as ordinary in the real world.
This is what we encounter in this tragic story. From the beginning of the story, the author presents a lively outlook of the village life and the different people who are
The author incorporates many occurrences of magical realism such as when Tita cries in the womb, Gertrudis hot sexual experience, and the way Tita is able to produce milk. One way magical realism is used in the novel is when Esquivel explains how Tita was brought into the world. “Tita was so sensitive to onions, any time they were being chopped, they say she would just cry and cry; when she was still in my great-grandmother’s belly her sobs were so loud that even Nacha, the cook, who was half-deaf, could hear them easily. Once her wailing got so violent that it
The essay, “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez describes a transcendent experience between an angel, Pelayo, and Elisenda. Although an angel has a positive connotation, the tale depicts this creature as repulsive and bothersome. Through narration of the struggle between the angel and the house owners, Marquez emphasizes faith and morality by symbolically addressing the humility of God’s work, the mockery made of faith, and annoyance elicited by morals. At the start of the essay, the angel’s humble aura reveals itself. Marquez describes the older gentlemen with wings as looking “like a ragpicker [whose] pitiful condition of a drenched great grand-father took away a sense of grandeur he might have had.”
There are fundamental questions that are posed in everyone’s life. The most asked, as well as the most daunting one is perhaps what happens when we die, and what is heaven like? Billy Collins in his poem “Question About Angels”, attempts to pose and answer such questions. As the poem is a statement on the outlook of how religion in interpreted, and how angels are perceived through the use of repetition, symbolism, and irony. Billy Collins attempts to show the reader a sense of mystery and unfamiliarity that leads to chaos when he is trying to describe how angels are perceived.
Magical Realism is so fascinating it fills your body with tremendous amounts of excitement causing your body to shoot straight through the roof. Magical Realism is a genre that incorporates mythical elements into otherwise realistic fiction. The books with the intense device of "enchantment" turn normal, "genuine" topics and things into something superb and engaging. The blending of these two components make the reader identify with the story and yet experience the fantastical within the mundane. One of the primary characteristics of magical realism focuses on the fact that the concept of time where there are notions of both fragmented history and the concept of timelessness; the idea
