Jacob Sadres May 19, 2023 Ms. Edelman Macbeth on Trial Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, today we are here to defend Macbeth, a very complicated character. He is a complicated character because he is loyal yet easily manipulated into doing the wrong thing. Even though Macbeth did bad things he does not deserve to be killed because it was not his fault. At the beginning of Macbeth's story, Macbeth was celebrated because he was loyal to the king. Macbeth even said, “If good, why do I yield to that suggestion temptation Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair, And make my seated heart knock at my ribs, fixed Against the use of nature?”(1.3.136-139). The witches are talking about how they are killing pigs which sounds like they are making a spell to try and put on someone. The Witches exclaim, “Posters of the sea and land, swift travelers Thus do go about, about, Thrice to thine and thrice to mine, And thrice again to make up nine Peace, the charm's wound up spell ready” (1.3.32-37). It sounds like the witches are making a spell and right after the spell, Macbeth and Banquo show up which proves that there's something going on between the witches and Macbeth. Macbeth is found talking to himself and says, “Avaunt and quit my sight; let the earth hide thee. / Thy bones are marrowless, thy blood is cold, / Thou hast no speculation in those eyes / Which thou dost glare with” (3.4.97-100). In this quote Macbeth is talking to himself but he thinks he is talking to the ghost and admits that he is being haunted by this ghost. Macbeth feels super guilty and freaked out because he genuinely believes he is talking to ghosts.
