Loyalty In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar

He tries to ally himself with the people labeling them as friends and fellow Romans. Starting out on a sincere note that will earn him respect from the crowd. Following this, Antony urges the crowd to join him in mourning Caesar, and eventually, he is overcome with distress. After regaining his composure he goes on to tell them that Caesar had been silenced, and he expresses dissatisfaction that the crowd wasn’t mourning with him. He puts the idea of rebellion in the minds of his listeners, but he urges them not to act on it.

. . " and that "as he was fortunate, I rejoice at it"(act 3, scene 2, 2). He humanizes himself to the crowd and swears that he loved Caesar just as they did. He also builds upon his existing reputation of honesty and nobility. Antony appeals to his own credibility by reminding the crowd of Caesars, reminding them of when "[he] thrice" offered to Caesar a crown and that "thrice [Caesar] refused" (Act 3, Scene 2, 4).

Lucilius, a faithful servant of Brutus, is captured by a solider of the army of Antony. Under the fake alias of Brutus, Antony is brought into his presence. However, Lucilius is devoted to never allowing any enemy to touch Brutus. Lucilius exclaims, “I dare assure thee that no enemy / Shall ever take alive the noble Brutus. / The gods defend him from so great a shame!”

With this quote, Antony is referring to how Caesar was presented with a crown but refused. Antony says this to make Caesar look unselfish and that he only has the best intentions for Rome. Antony successfully uses Logos to persuade the

Brutus blindly believes Antony’s loyalty towards Rome and the conspirators, which gives Antony the chance to foil their plans. After Caesar’s death, Antony immediately sends his servant to deliver a message to Brutus saying, “If Brutus will vouchsafe that Antony / May safely come to him” and give the reason why “Caesar hath deserved to lie in death” (Shakespeare III.i.145-147), then Antony “will follow / the fortunes and affairs of noble Brutus” (III.i.149-150). Knowing that Brutus is the least likely person to kill him out of the conspirators, as he is an honorable person, Antony takes advantage of Brutus’ overly trusting nature. Brutus was a traitor to his country because of his display of treason. However, Brutus may have done what was best for Rome, to improve and reestablish his beloved country. Similarly, people may claim that Brutus was, in fact doing what was best for his country, and that murdering Caesar was not a betrayal. He seems to feel that Caesar would not be an asset to Rome and Brutus wants to really improve the country.

Then, one of the last points he makes is presenting Caesar’s will. This shows the crowd what a monumental person Caesar was in that, even after his death, he wanted to give back to the people of Rome. The noble Antony reads out, “Moreover, he hath left you all his walks, his private arbors and new-planted orchards, on this side Tiber. He hath left them you, and to your heirs for ever — common pleasures,” (3.2.340-43). These precise instances of Caesar’s generous heart make the citizens wonder why such a respectable man was murdered.

In this area Antony is, once again, superior mainly due to his questioning of those who are against him. Antony uses the will of Caesar to back up what he’s stating. “Wherein hath Caesar thus deserved your loves? Alas, you know not! I must tell you then.

The last words spoken by Julius Caesar were “Et tu Brute? Then fall, Caesar!” These words resonate the feelings of disbelief and betrayal Julius Caesar felt the moment his trusted friend and fellow roman, Brutus came out from the shadows of his fellow conspirators to assassinate him. Though Brutus was an honorable person his flaws caused both himself and Caesar to succumb to brutal deaths. The decision by Brutus to commit this act of mutiny upon Caesar was immoral.

Brutus realized the great harm Caesar could bring to Rome if the was crowned king. Although Brutus was easily persuaded by Cassius to go as far as committing a murder, Brutus did it because he thought that it was the best for Rome. Brutus does what he thinks is the absolute best for Rome which really shows his great honor and

Would you trust someone who kills their best friend for the good of their country or some guy who thinks they knew the leader? Exactly, you would want and trust a leader who would do anything for the good of their country. Julius Caesar was murder by Brutus and the other conspirators but they said it was for the good of Rome. Brutus and Antony both gave a speeches over Julius Caesars death to appeal to the plebeians. Brutus funeral speech was a more effective speech than Antony because his use of ethos, pathos, and logos made the plebeians focus on his words more.

He is devoted and utterly selfless for the good of his country. For instance, Brutus stabs Caesar because he is tricked into thinking that the citizens fear Caesar. Keeping this in mind, Brutus kills Caesar to satisfy and ease his people, demonstrating that he prioritizes his country over his friendship with Caesar. Though Brutus ended Caesar’s life, Brutus still holds some loyalty to friends and says, “Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved/ Rome more.” (3.2.50-60)

Caesar encounters many incidents when he is directly warned about his death. However, each time, he fails to accept such warnings because of his pride. The first incident is during the feast of Lupercal, when a soothsayer warns him “Beware the ides of March” (1.2.23). Without taking the warning seriously, Caesar dismisses the soothsayer as a “dreamer.” Furthermore, when he reencounters the soothsayer on the ides of March, Caesar ridicules him by saying “The ides of March are come” (3.1.1).

There are two reasons why Antony gave this speech. The first was to get back at Brutus for murdering his beloved friend, and making him pay for it. The main reason Antony gave this speech is because he had a greed for power. He thought that if he could get all the plebeians on his side, that they would attack the conspirators and trust Antony, therefore making it easy to take on the spot for power. “Our course will seem too bloody, Caius Cassius, To cut the head off and then hack the limbs, Like wrath in death and envy afterwards, For Antony is but a limb of Caesar.

The play begins with Julius Caesar returning from a victory over Pompey to a cheering crowd of Romans. He is an ambitious leader who wants Rome to prosper and looks out for his countrymen over himself, though he has his own, darker, flaws. This selflessness is explicitly demonstrated by him saying “What touches us shall be last served” (III.I.9) when he is told to deal with a letter because it most directly related to him. His goal is to further Rome and gain the approval of his people, which he does very well.
