The first piece of evidence that relationships help Slava survive is that Slava grew closer to Buksa, befriended Marial and kept close to Uncle Jewiir as he traveled with the group. The quote that supports this is “ It was good to make a friend” (30). This means that because he had made a friend, life was a bit more bearable. Another reason why having relations was so beneficial for Slava is that when Salva’s only friend, Marial, was eaten by a lion, his relationship with Uncle Jewiir helped him cope with the loss of his best friend. This shows that when grief strikes, Slava held together because of his relationships with other people. The third and final piece of evidence is that when Slava has dreams of going to america but does not speak english, he finds and aid worker who teaches him how to speak the language. This shows that because of his relations, Slava overcomes a problem that he normally could not conquer himself. So the second factor that led to Slava’s survival is his relations with other

After Leah and her family arrived in the Congo, she describes the scene as “hot, arid...” and “wreaking with the smell of urine”. This depiction brings a stark contrast to the cool afternoons spent in her hometown. She had already began to experience the effect of what felt like exile from her native home. Immediately she notices the “naked and malnourished” men, women, and children.

A quote from the book is “The boy charmed all with his bravery and wit and was adopted by the king himself and was wise and arms and letters; at last he became king himself and was wise and good”(268). But Waltzer revealed that the boy set the fire himself (268). The quote represents Davy’s life before Finch and Basca intruded into Davy’s personal life: His girlfriend, his family, and his house.

The ferryman is somewhat responsible for what happens to the friends in the sacks, though it is an indirect association. Though he did take the creatures that were carrying the friends in sacks, he did not know what their intentions were or what was in the sacks until he had carried them all across and until carrying the second creature across, respectively. The ferryman most likely only realized what he had done after he carried the final creature across the river. In the quote, "It's a short trip and a fair price," the ferryman does not even know what the creatures are carrying in their bags. That is, of corse, is when he is greeting the second creature that he crosses the rive with.

The military use anger to manipulate the boys by making the boys blame the rebels for everything “ Visualize the banana tree as the enemy, the rebels who killed your parent your family and those who are responsible for everything that happened to you” (112). With all the built up anger that the boys have it was easy for them to manipulate them because with the loss of their family and friends they already hate the rebels and having them stabbing the banana tree was a way for them to
