Living with Sexism Men were always seen as superior and women have always been told to stay at home, do the chores, and raise the children. When women finally realized how discriminating the world was around the 1850’s they started to take matters into their own hands. Protests began to make an appearance and women fought and are still fighting, to be treated equal to men. People started to hear their demands and began to fix the problems that were at hand but they did not solve them to the extent that they need to be. Women now go to college and have full time jobs but they still are not as equal to men as we’d like to think they are. Men and women are still being treated differently in many places during life. Girls and women are very often taken advantage of in these types of situations. “...As much as 70% of women experience violence during their life, the U.N. said.” That rate is especially high for women between the ages of 15 and 44 who are more likely to experience domestic violence than cancer, malaria or car accidents (Friedman 3). Females have to constantly be on edge and alert to make sure they aren’t part of that 70% of women that are raped and or abuse. These types of things are happening to so many females that it is almost normal for them to go through something like this whereas it is less common for men. Human trafficking is also a huge issue regarding women and their safety. Of the 800,000 plus people a year trafficked across international borders 80% of them are women (Friedman 3). This puts perspective on how much more women experience something that could possibly leave a PTSD than men. Human trafficking, domestic violence, and sexual harassment target more women than men. These things are very prevalent in our society and still nobody talks about
Women are stripped of their ability to be able to live a life full of dignity and respect. A woman is assaulted or beaten every 9 seconds in the United States. There are more than 20,000 phone calls placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide daily. Weapons are involved in 19% of domestic violence. Victims of domestic violence have higher suicidal and depression rates.
From the 1800’s to the 20th century, women had gained a lot more independence than they had before. In the year 1777 when voting started to become more relevant, women were decided not to be allowed to be apart of voting, unlike now in the 21st century where women are allowed to vote. From the beginning of the 18th century, women were discriminated against until the middle of the 18th century. After the mid-1750’s, women started to gain more ground on rights and things that they were more freely allowed to do. Women slowly started to gain more ground on things to do such as being guaranteed equal pay starting from the year 1872 to current present time.
Women from the 1930s-the 50s witnessed their rights skyrocket into greatness because of WWII. WWII caused many women to work at men’s jobs since most of the men were at war. The job opportunities for women include engineering, mathematicians, computing, etc. After a while, people started getting dependent on women to get the job done. However, after WWII people were considering taking the women’s new jobs away and sending them back to doing housework or low-paying jobs, but since the women had proved that they deserve their jobs by working people decide not to fire them.
Today, most would think that all humans have equal rights. Unfortunately, though, women are still not treated as equal as men. Women do not get paid as much as men do, they are expected to stay home and take care of the children, and they do not have as many job opportunities as men do. All of this is in spite of the fact that women have been fighting for their rights in this country since the 1800s. Two of the most widely known speeches are “Ain’t I a Woman” and “Speech at Seneca Falls Convention.”
Men have given the media this unrealistic image that women cannot fend for themselves, cannot do hard jobs, or cannot get as far in life as a man. Even in jobs, though a woman and a man may be in the same position, women “earn just 74 cents for every $1 a man earns” (CNNMoney). This is truly unfair, yet men today still say that women are “equal,” though it is obviously false. Women today, though they have more rights than in the 1800’s, are still not in the place we need to be in ranking with men. Women are still abused, sexually harassed and mistreated more than men because of their sex.
In the past, women were not perceived as equal individuals to their male counterpart. Males were considered superior, they were allowed to own land, vote, work, go to school and many more. While the female was expected to stay home and take care of the kids. Eventually, women used their voices to reveal they had enough of inequality and injustice. Standing together, fighting for decades despite being disregarded; they continued to persevere through.
The gap between men and women has always seemed to be prevalent in our world it seems like it. From working wages to basic rights, women always seem to not be considered equal to men. In professional sports, for example, female athletes are paid less than their male counterparts, even if they execute better than them. "I cannot think of any other industry that has such a wage gap, really. Depending on country context and sport, a man can be a billionaire and a woman [in the same discipline] cannot even get a minimum salary" (Beatrice Frey, sport partnership manager at UN Women).
For as long as the world has existed there has been sexism. Even after the women rights act was passed in the 1920’s there has still been discrimination against women. Wether it be in the workforce, online, or just out in public sexism still happens. In the year 2018 women should not still be discriminated simply for their gender. Many people wonder as to what would be the best approach to end sexism.
In order to address the issue of sexism within the academic environment, we need to take a firm stance in combating gender discrimination and the attitudes that women are unlikely to secure tenure status and raise a family as a faculty within higher education. Sexism permeates within the higher education institutions on various. Though sexism manifests itself in the form of overt/covert discrimination, there are many instances that involve a more subtle entrenched inequity amongst women. Dr. Hill’s inappropriate comment towards women manifests itself as a microaggression towards the three female advisees as incapable of succeeding and securing a job as a woman. Leadership Approach
Equality among people justifies the development of human civilization. The history witnesses how people mistreated the others and how other people fought for freedom. It proves a permanent truth that the more civilized the people are, the less inequality would be promoted. However, there was no one period in the past, even now, without inequality completely. The slavery issue in the West and the gender inequality in the East both brought unimaginable damage for not only the groups of people who were mistreated, but also the society which is supposed to be peaceful, fair and justice.
Women face getting treated differently, lower paying positions, the opinions of men, and the idea that because they are women they are not capable of the same kind of work men are capable of. The more people that support the different movements for women’s rights the better chance of this issue becoming more well known. Although some may know the struggle women go through to be compared as equally to men, there is still room for more to learn about this issue. Just because women were brought on earth to make more lives does not mean they are weaker and should have to go through this everyday of their
In Igbo culture it is acceptable to beat women and look down upon them? Women are below men in this culture and in the eyes of the Europeans that is wrong. In Things Fall Apart sexism is shown in many ways such as the abuse of women, social expectations and the power of males. But the Igbo culture views that as normal while the rest of the world despises the cultures way of treating women. Although Chinua Achebe’s novel Things Fall Apart shows traces of gender equality among the Igbo, the European audience views the culture as sexist.
Women still fall behind in earnings and productivity, and in the strength of their voices in society. In some areas, such as education, there is now a gender gap to the disadvantage of men and boys. Gender inequality is seen at the very highest level, with women underrepresented in government decision making positions. Women
Gender Equality is the only way forward. What is gender equality? Gender equality is achieved when all genders enjoy the same rights and opportunities across all sectors of society, including economic participation and decision-making, and when the different behaviors, aspirations and needs of women and men are equally valued and favored.
The United States is currently facing an economical problem that involves males and female differences within the workplace. Males are given bigger and sometimes even better rewards for doing equal amounts of work as their female counterparts. Females are frequently not receiving the same wage even if they can complete the same job of a male. Also, females are less likely to get promoted within their job if they are competing against a male. A source states, “Women are now more likely to have college degrees than men, yet they still face a pay gap in every single education level,
