Literary devices are used to bridge the gaps and fill in the cracks for me where simple words do not suffice in some stories. I find myself constantly searching stories for and identifying different types of literary devices. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, three uses of literary devices were demonstrated and used consistently. These literary devices are: repetition, imagery and flashbacks. This literary narrative is centered on an epic journey that utilizes literary devices to enhance the complexity and understanding in the story.
Flashbacks are a great story telling device mostly used in narratives, such as the epic. It's almost a hand and glove fit in this story while adding depth to the story and a more intricate background. Flashbacks also draw the reader in and make story more interesting, and provide a better overall understanding of what's taking place as it takes you back in time. In “Gilgamesh” the example of a flashback that is used is the Story of the Flood. This flashback provided the reader the ability to go back in time to get portions of the plot explained and get more engulfed into the

Imagery can be so beautiful and vivid, it really engulfs you into the reading. It holds significance because we as humans like for things to be drawn out for us or painted out. Creating a narrative that's easy to understand, of course no one wants a story that's filled with misconception. Imagery provides a deeper connection with the deeper and takes the reader back to a time or a place just like repetition.
In “The Epic of Gilgamesh” the Imagery of the Forest is very important. Our two heroes, Gilgamesh and Enkidu must pass through this intimidating and dangerous forest to validate their heroism and slay the monster Humbaba. This imagery could represent several different things. Often forest imagery is used to represent danger. In this case it probably represents the heroes’ dangerous rite of
In the novel Anthem written by Ayn Rand, flashbacks are used by the author to show the readers events that they did not get to hear about. Flashbacks also help the readers understand what one character was doing while another was doing something else. Anthem is written after the protagonist, Equality, had already reached his goal therefore the whole book is one large flashback however each scene in the book can be defined as on flashback. With help of flashbacks in Anthem, readers are able to see the whole picture and the whole story behind what has happened in their society.
By using flashbacks, the author is connecting the reader to Melinda, allowing the reader to feel how horrible Melinda’s trauma is on a personal level. This is significant to the thesis because the book highlights the theme of healing through Melinda's character development, and her flashbacks are a
A flashback is when you look back at something in the past in your head. Another one is point of view. It is a device that shows who the story was told by. It also supports the setting. It also supports the characters.
Metaphors and similes create picture by describing something using a comparison. Pathos, Ethos, and Logos are also used to make or persuade a reader to feel a certain way. These
Throughout the novel, Ishmael Beah uses flashbacks as a way to address the loss of his innocence. When Ishmael Beah has to partake in murder of other innocent people, his innocence is taken
The reason why Orson Welles particularly chose a flashback was so we can get to know the history of Charles Foster Kane. A flashback is a tool used in writing to allow a character to explore events occurring at a different time. The reader follows the characters thoughts as they examine and earlier situation. This can be essential to the story in that, it can give needed background information. However, sometimes a flashback can upset the rhythm of the story and, therefore, have a negative effect.
Wolf uses “flashbacks” to help structure the plot to show her style. In both stories, it helps the reader understand what has happened because both stories first talk about a death. A reviewer also stated how “The author has done a good job of helping readers understand the accident as it is told in flashbacks
Imagery allows a reader to imagine the events of a story within their mind through mental images. Imagery can describe how something looks, a sound, a feeling, a taste, or a smell. Imagery is especially important when the author is describing a character or a setting. The short story The Man In The Black Suit by Stephen King has several excellent examples of imagery.
Specifically speaking, flashbacks are shown mostly through letters or journals that were written by Cheryl and read by April. For example, one of the most influential flashback to the overall plot would be when April found Cheryl’s journals. April read that “[their] mother took her own life. [s]he killed herself” (199). Through flashbacks the author was able to fit the missing puzzles to the plot.
Using repetition and duality is a great way to express people’s feelings and reactions. The authors of the Epic of Gilgamesh used repetition to emphasize their viewpoint in showing that Gilgamesh was a powerful king. Duality meant to better illustrate points about Gilgamesh, and to catch the reader’s attention. Dualities gave a good picture of Gilgamesh and life in Uruk, and this picture was better when these dualities were repeated, because that made Gilgamesh 's personality brighten up. Although immortality and power were not big themes in the epic, the use of repeated dualities by different characters emphasizes the importance of power and immortality.
Gilgamesh and David are presented as the best kings, but their reigns are also marked by serious personal failures. What does the relationship between the kings’ successes and failures show us about kingship? During the reign of David and Gilgamesh, they are known to be the greatest king among all the other kings, but there are moments that portrayed them as wicked rulers and tyrants. Being a king means they both possess divine and absolute power, and with the power comes along the complications such as corruptions and misconducts.
Flashback and foreshadowing is two literary devices that are usually used in order to create an anomalous effect. Flashbacks are the events which are occurred before the present time the narration follows. Flashback is used to comprise a background to the present situation
“The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury focuses on many craft moves throughout the story. Some specific ones he focused on was dialogue, imagery, and suspense. He focused on these to explain the character's tone, draw a picture in the reader's mind, and create tension. In the story he used a lot of dialogue to show the characters speaking, he used imagery to make an imaginary world come true in the reader's mind and he used tension to make the reader more interested in reading the end. These craft moves all make the story better.
Together, they balance out the tamed and untamed worlds and with Enkidu ’s help Gilgamesh becomes a hero king. Together they go on to defeat Huwawa, the monster in the cedar forest, they defeat the bull of heaven sent from Ishtar, and at the end Gilgamesh is shown to represent a real hero king due to the friendship of
The Epic of Gilgamesh is an example of a piece of literature that uses symbolism frequently. For example, it uses “garden” meaning paradise and even refers to The Garden of Eden. In the Epic of Gilgamesh by anonymous, the symbols cedar meaning immortality, mountains which represents proximity to the gods, and gates and portals symbolizing a passage to the unknown are very important within the epic itself. Cedar within the epic does not only mean a tree, but has a deeper definition as well. Cedar can often represent immortality because it doesn’t decay and it is very hard to break.
