In the novel Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel, she created a cast of characters containing strong females that give dedication and great honor throughout their lives. Though each character has a different type of strength, it proves how strong a female can be inside without even knowing it. Tita shows her strength by breaking family traditions and affecting others with her actions. Nacha who is partially deaf can read what other people say and she raises a child who isn't hers. Mama Elena has a real strength by using her authority as head of the family and abusing said authority. Tita is the strongest of the female characters because she disobeyed her mother's rules, raised a child that isn't hers, and got revenge on Pedro for marrying her sister.

Mama Elena is known for abusing her authority by telling Pedro's father instead of marrying Tita he should marry Rosaura. For example, "But if you really want Pedro to get married, allow me to suggest my daughter Rosaura, who's just two years older than Tita"(13). She shows that as being the head of the house, she can do anything in her way. Her power is also showing that she can make somebody suffer. Another way she shows her strength is by beating Tita. For example, "The night of the wedding reception she had gotten a tremendous hiding from Mama Elena, like no beating before or since. She spent two weeks in bed recovering from her bruises" (41). Mama Elena has to have a certain type of strength by beating her daughter that bad. By Mama Elena feeling that Tita messed up Rosaura's wedding. She wants her strength to cause major sufferment on Tita. The difference between Mama Elena's strength and the other females is that she has cruel
The playwright utilizes household rules, perseverance, and her plant to show us how strong Mama’s beliefs are. Mama’s stinginess in respect to household rules was evident when she slapped Beneatha for denouncing God. Mama demonstrates strength in her beliefs by not allowing Beneatha to impugn God in her household. Despite everything she’s been through, Mama maintains her beliefs, showing perseverance. This is evident throughout her adult life; as her dream of providing a nice life for her family never panned out.
She aids in reinforcing Mama Elena's cruel traditions not only on Tita, but on her own daughter as well. Throughout the book, Rosauras actions support Mama Elena’s ideas on the youngest daughters being subservient to her until she dies. “Fine, if that's what you want, let's start there. With your wrongful claim to a boyfriend. You had no right to have a boyfriend…
In my opinion, Tita is not a strong character. In fact, it seems like she is the most emotionally vulnerable of all the characters shown so far. From what we’ve read so far, the problems in the story mostly come from Tita not being able to control her emotions which also leads to her powers to manifesting. From the cake of depression to the aphrodisiac quail dish, the complications that happen after consuming it are because of Tita and her emotions. Her character so far does not seem so strong.
In the Dominican Republic, a leader named Trujillo oppresses the people of the country hurting everyone who happens to get in his way. It was Minerva, one of the sisters, who spoke out and declared the cruelty the people are faced with. Her passion and leadership is shown from the very beginning as a child. Her influence also carried on to the other sisters making them become more strong in their beliefs. Sadly, the other sisters had plans and their own ideas of how to live their lives.
But what inspires such submission to control? The mother and Daughter’s characters are more action that voice. Their only lines of dialog are responses to the father’s dinnertime badgering. The mother appears broken down, a shell of a person struggling to speak. The daughter spite and fire lashing out at the father's insults.
Firstly ,Elena Vilkas. A selfless, hardworking, fearless mother who installed strength and determination to those around her who may not have survived without. Also known for her unselfishness which she exhibited in many situations of the novel. For example, when Elena gave up her bread ration to a starving boy who was already dead but had his hand outstretched as if he was asking for food. The incredible thing about it was that she herself was also very sick and that bit of food could’ve ended up being very critical between life or death.
She is also one of the strongest women in the plot of the story. This makes Esperanza look up to her mom and make herself want to be a strong woman when she grows up. Esperanza's mom helps influence the way Esperanza wants to live her life in the future. The last of the three most influential characters is Marin.
Formalist Plot You know what they say; you are what you eat! What kind of food you eat and prepare shows a little bit of who you are and in literature it can sometimes be used to convey meaning. In many ways the heart shaped cookies that one makes in february can represent their love for somebody in a way that words can’t. Sometimes we have to recognize that the smallest actions we make can tell a lot about our lives and our stories.

She is very emotional and is easily attached to people. This is to some extent diminished because of her unlucky streak with people she get 's close to. She is my choice to illustrate the elements of character because she is the character I could think of that the story 's events had changed the most about. Her brother, the protagonist turned out to be a serial killer and she had to learn to "cope" with that, which flipped her around as a person. She eventually even became an accomplice in some of his killings.

As the protagonist, much of the story is centered around Alexandra. Because of this, Alexandra is the most developed and three-dimensional character in the book. We see many sides of Alexandra, but something that is apparent early in the novel is that she is a strong character. One of Alexandra's strengths in the novel is her toughness. Even from her physical description early in the story, Alexandra is shown as a tom-boy. "
