Discoveries can be both challenging and rewarding Introduction In the Life of Pi, Ang lee uses imaginative realism and metaphorical language to display Pi’s strong spiritual nature and will to live. Life of Pi is a film that is mainly based on fantasy and imaginative realism where the main character (Piscine Molitor Patel) experiences challenging and rewarding discoveries. Throughout the film, Pi navigates through hardships and spiritual awakenings in order to survive 227 days on a lifeboat with a bengal tiger. Pi runs into many physical and mental challenges whilst stranded, and, at times, loses hope and accepts his expected fate. Pi leaps up and hopes that help has finally come and his discovery will be coming to a close. He soon realises the aggression and violence of the storm and recognises the challenges ahead. One of the outstanding themes in this scene is the nature of religious belief. These spiritual beliefs are motivating Pi to continue his journey in order to complete his toilsome discovery. Thunder and rumble, I feel the wrath of God on the ocean we are sailing. Suddenly I hear a crash, and I fly across my cage violently, the yelling of the voices on the vessel in shock and suddenly I hear the words “We’re going down!” A zoo keeper comes down the the hull of the ship and begins opening the cages of animals- the zebra, the monkeys, the hounds, all released waiting patiently for my turn the zookeeper falls over. He does not move and water comes crashing into the hull-I’m going to die. I lie down on the ground as water pours in accepting my fate.
Sense after reading "life of Pi" Pi is a teenager born in India and at the same time believing in Christianity, Islam and Hinduism. His father runs a zoo, so he knows the habits of animals. Frankly speaking, the beginning of this story is not attractive, mixed with a religious belief in a teenager's growth experience. Then the story officially entered into the "fantasy draft". Pi family take boat to move to Canada with their animals, Pi's father wanted to bring the animals to a foreign country in order to sell a good price.
Pi continues his journey by learning how to live in a small space with these animals and even training one of them. In the wake of the shipwreck, Pi is the sole human survivor as he boards a lifeboat, and spends what seems like an eternity out in the Pacific ocean in the company of a 450-pound adult Bengal tiger. Throughout his 227-day journey, Pi becomes a clear archetypal hero. Life of Pi is a battle taking place in pi’s mind between his id, superego, and ego. Your id is the primal side of your mind “ I want to do that now.” Your superego is over corrective “You can’t do that now” Your ego is a compromise of the id and the superego. In life of Pi the id is represented by Richard Parker. Life of Pi represents how our id is hidden inside of us when we are in society but, when we need a primal side it comes out and keeps us alive.
Life of Pi is a movie about Pi, a shipwreck survivor, and his epic journey of discovery and faith. It is based on Yann Martel’s novel with the same name, and the movie, directed by Ang Lee, makes use of magical realism to convey many themes related to life and spirituality. Many significant symbols are also used to showcase the characteristics of magical realism. In particular, water and the carnivorous island were two important symbols that represented the theme of spirituality in Life of Pi.
The Japanese boat Tsimtsum in which the family takes to travel to Canada with all their animals unfortunately sinks. Pi is able to escape onto a life raft as for the rest of his family ends up not surviving the wreck. The big turning point in the story where Pi now has to find out a way to survive. A tiger named “Richard Parker”, a zebra, a hyena and an Orangutan named “Orange Juice” are all stuck on a lifeboat with Pi. Pi begins to start using the wisdom his dad had taught him through the years.
The theme in Life of Pi is without a doubt the hardships in order to survive. The whole novel is about enduring pain, hardships, starvation, dehydration and more. I believe the author wrote this novel to reveal the hardships one has to proceed through in order to keep living. Pi certainly shows how quick life can change from ordinary to a long lasting nightmare. Surely this can happen to anyone, but not everyone can survive the long lasting nightmare.
When Pi’s life is put in serious danger, he has to adjust his wants and needs of many different aspects of his life. Pi was living what he called a perfect life. From spending most of his days with animals to practicing swimming, he learned to love everything about his life. However, things changed when a ship that his entire family on sank in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

If you’re in a critical situation you’d want to be able to both outthink the issue and be prepared for the risks and calculate everything. You’d also, if necessary, want to be able to overpower the task at hand. In order to survive, and thrive under the best possible conditions one needs to be both mentally fit and physically fit.

" This idea is shown by how Pi used his free will to choose to think critically and positively to survive a desperate near death situation. With the combination of magical realistic events and Pi’s religious beliefs, Pi along with the reader a contemplates life’s concepts. From the very beginning, Pi makes his love and yearning for religion clear. As Life of Pi progresses, the protagonist picks up multiple religions as he travels through the novel. With the addition of first Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity, Pi gains attention from leaders and priests of these faiths. Conflict commences with the religious leaders of these individual faiths.
In the movie, Life of Pi, the main character Pi Patel makes convincing arguments for the existence of God through both natural religion and revealed religion. His argument is that God exists because that is the better story. The plot of the movie is Pi telling an author his life story, including his religious experiences before, and after the shipwreck. In this essay, I will argue that Pi makes a stronger argument for the existence of God through natural religion.
He is unable to understand why the Lord isn’t listening to his prayers and why everything is detrimental to him. Keeping his religious beliefs at sea is very challenging for Pi, this leads him to experience feelings of disbelief towards God. Despite his doubts, Pi continues to pray and practice his religions. He eventually comes to the conclusion that once everything is taken away from him and he is in complete darkness, he will always have his faith. He admits that loving God is difficult, but it’s something he must do if he is to survive his journey across the ocean.
