The students' self esteem will go up which will let them participate and do more to benefit the classrooms. They will also be less antsy because they will be focused on work, and not worrying about their uncomfortable seats. The value of the STEM system (science, technology, engineering, and math) is steering the education world in a new and positive direction, although some may believe otherwise. The entire letter of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter From Birmingham Jail” presents an African American view of cultural and political issues -- everything needs to take action. As King informs the reader, when he was participating in the parade, nonviolently as ever, he would end up arrested for not providing a “permit” while he knew that was not the truth. Everyone knows the chant from the introduction of the show Bill Nye the Science Guy. For some, Bill Nye is the reason they became interested in science in the first place to make a career out of it. Positive role models like Bill Nye can make a huge difference in a child’s interest in STEM education. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Sometimes Arts is included, changing the acronym to STEAM.

The word misperception is defined as “to understand or perceive incorrectly; misunderstand” (Merriam Webster, 2018). One way misperceptions occur happens when individuals do not fully understand a concept. In his essay, “The New Liberal Arts,” Sanford J. Ungar explains the common misperceptions people form about a liberal arts education; he also explains his reasoning and viewpoints toward it. In fact, a liberal arts education provides multiple benefits. Benefits such as job security and job opportunities result from this type of education.

I believe continued education is the best. Upon graduating high school, students are faced with reality of attending college right away or waiting to try and find themselves in the real world. Those who are not academically nor financially prepared to attend college right after high school will most likely take a break. Taking long breaks from education can distract one and may lead to taking more than one year of a break. While taking a break from school before going to college, may cause some people to become young parents, then going back to school will not be a priority because now the main focus will be about their child.

My middle school, however, was rather weak in the STEM field. I learned to love history and the humanities in that school, and STEM-fields, for a moment, seemed to be an afterthought. My current high school, Stuyvesant High School, is known to be a pressure cooker, and yet over 3000 students are willing to sacrifice their sleep and sanity to subject themselves to stress. Yes, my school offers the most AP classes out of any school in our city, and possibly the best environment for learning with similarly-minded high-achieving students.

In the agriculture industry, there is a unique situation. Agriculture production needs to increase to feed two more billion people by 2050. This needs to be done carefully as additional land cannot be used, so it is up to individuals with new and better ideas.

Between my liberal arts education and the internship that I have recently started at the Innocence Project of Minnesota both will be invaluable contributing factors for my career goals. My liberal arts education demonstrates to employers that my knowledge is not just localized to a single field, but instead it is a large breadth of subjects spanning multiple fields. The way I’ve always viewed my liberal arts education is that it makes me a jack-of-all-trades. My internship on the other hand serves a slightly different purpose. My internship demonstrates to an employers that I’m more than just a jack-of-all-trades, it shows that there is one trade that I’m trying to master.

There is no doubt that we, as a society, place high emphasis on finding the most efficient ways to prepare high school students for a future packed with technology and science. As we move away from industrial and hands-on jobs and instead seek out methods of automation and heightened productivity, it is universally accepted that the core STEM classes (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) are indeed crucial for educating the next generation. But this almost desperate race to push exclusively for technical courses has resulted in the complete monopolization of school budgets and the elimination of liberal and fine arts courses from a high school education. Seeking a liberal arts education presents an opportunity for me to grow as an individual in today’s modern world. It will prepare me in our frequently changing society which has grown more diverse than ever before with the help of the internet. A liberal arts education can provide me a greater view of the world. Day to day I mindlessly go through the motions of life like it’s the back of my hand. I have found it difficult to live a life with no real surprises or challenges.
