“With my feet still bound, I lunge for him, just as flame bursts from the barrel.” In the book, Liars Inc. by Paula Stokes, the main character, Max Cantrell, begins a company called Liars, Inc. with his best friend, Preston, and his girlfriend, Parvati. One event leads to another, and Preston goes missing. Max has to figure out what happened to Preston without getting in trouble with the police. Max lied to the police about Preston’s location, he lied about dating Parvati, and Preston lied about who he was his whole life. Max gets accused of murder, has a restraining order taken out against him, and almost gets killed. After this, he began to realize that lying can lead to fatal consequences. To start off my argument, Max lied to the police about Preston’s location when they were out camping together. Preston had asked Max if he would cover for him while Preston traveled to Vegas to meet a mysterious woman named Violet Cain. Max didn’t hesitate to say yes to help his best friend. But little did Max know that the next day, Preston would go missing, and Max would be the first person to be accused of causing his disappearance. Max didn’t think that anything was wrong until his stepmother, Darla, told him, “Claudia DeWitt is on the phone. She wants to talk to you. A family.” As it turns out, the Cantrells came into the adoption home to adopt Preston, but they fell in love with Max, so they adopted him instead. In the loss of Max Powers, Max hosted a housewarming party with four of his acquaintances. Coincidentally, all of his friends were named in his will and all had very extensive reasons to kill Max Powers. Due to her motive, faulty testimony, and multiple pieces of physical evidence Beverly has one of the greatest opportunities of being the guilty suspect. One reason suggesting Beverly's guilt in Max Power’s murder is her compelling motive for the crime.

He was drafted during World War II . During the war, his plane crashed in the middle of the ocean and he was stranded with little resources to survive. This book follows his incredible story battling starvation and abuse in Prisoner of War camps (POW).

Hitler took many things away from Max, including his parents. Max’s book The Standover Man was about a “bird” (man) that was always being told what to do. Max helps Liesel to understand how he was treated, and that he was afraid of loosing his life. However, Liesel helps Max to understand that he should not be afraid of “The Standover Man”.

Max and Liesel gain a very strong friendship until he must leave for the family’s safety. In the end, the Allied Powers bomb the city, leaving Liesel as the lone survivor, leaving Liesel to face an extremely difficult time. In the end, the narrator, Death, reunites her with Max. When Max’s father showed up in the middle of the night to “take Max with him”, Freak does the brave thing of helping the police look for his best friend. As the police find Max and his father, Killer Kane, Kevin stands up tall and sprays Kenny with a concoction that burns when it touches Killer Kane’s eyes. After the struggle is over Kenny Kane is arrested and is sent to jail for the murder of Annie Kane, attempted murder of Loretta Lee, and attempted murder of Maxwell Kane. Max wakes up next to Harry, and senses something wrong. She sees a kid with wings and recognizes him. He comes up to her and gives her an extended hug. She loves the contact of her old flock member: “When he folded me into a hug, I loved the way he squeezed me a little too tight, held on a little too long.” (261) As shown here, she is reunited with one of the people that she loves, and she is clearly happy.
