Leonid Fridman America Needs Its Nerds

Having never taken a college writing course before, I did not know what to expect and therefore assumed that I would choose my own topic to write about; of course, this isn’t the case. However, if I had the choice, I would not have chosen to write a response to Gerald Graff’s “Hidden Intellectualism”. After going through his essay with a fine-tooth comb, I have found a few flaws in his reasoning. Gerald Graff believes that schools and colleges are not taking advantage of “street smarts” by not using them in an intellectual setting when in fact, schools are providing students with a large assortment of other knowledge and skills. He explains how these street smarts are just as important as doing well academically.

Well known article writer, Leonid Fridman, in his article, “America Needs Its Nerds”, describes the truthful idea that nerds and geeks, in our society, are ostracized while the kids who play sports and party are prominent. Fridman’s purpose is to impress upon the readers that nerds should not have to conform to society’s unimpressive values of what it means to be “popular”. He adopts an indignant tone in order to convey to his readers that the idea of nerds and geeks needs to fought. Fridman moves to the idea that children who would rather read and build model airplanes are the social outcasts compared to the ones who would rather play football and get wasted at parties.

“How long can America remain a world-class power if we constantly emphasize social skills and physical prowess over academic achievement and intellectual ability?” Leonid Fridman uses this sentence to finalize his argument for why Americans should stop alienating its intellectual citizens. Fridman uses a few techniques to build his argument including word choice, factual based examples, and appeals to emotions. The text “America Needs its Nerds” could be very relatable for some people.

Daniel, he states that the quality of our college education has decreased in the last several decades. However, that is not true, now more than ever, we are learning new information in science, medicine, technology, art, and countless others. With the new advances we have made, we are able to study and learn new information in ways that where never before possible. Time after time throughout Neusner’s essay he rapidly says that students only earn good grades due to the professors being exhausted and just handing out the grades so that their students like them, he says that it’s easier. Then that means he has chosen to give up on his job, take the easy way out, he lost his passion or interest in teaching.

After I finished reading Gerald Graff's essay, Hidden Intellectualism, I found myself agreeing with the idea that intellectualism is not, and should not, be measured purely by "academic" means. "Street smarts" and "book smarts" are put at odds by Mr. Graff, and according to his writing, the rest of our culture. The essay attempts to make the assertion that at the heart of "real" intellectualism is the ability to turn almost any subject matter into something interesting, or even more important, a way to connect to the world and a community where the discussion is important. The theme of this essay involves the writer's own internal struggle with his personal history, along with the failing of our education system to bring out the best in students, using material in which they show real interest.

Paradigm Shift in Intellectualism Gerald Graff highlights the laxity of institutions to nurture supposedly non-intellectuals in his disquisition “Hidden Intellectualism”. Graff believes the predominant reason to be our association of these individuals with anti-intellectualism. Furthermore, he believes society’s notion of intellectualism lies in evaluating weighty and arduous topics such as Plato and Shakespeare, and real intellectualism constitutes enlivening the dullest of subjects. Essentially, Gerald Graff claims that pupils would be “more prone to take on intellectual identities if we encouraged them to do so… on subjects that interest them” (Graff 265). He describes his adolescent experience as an argument favouring his claim.

The main argument is that perceived throughout the reading is that the schools itself is failing students. They see a student who may not have the greatest test scores or the best grades, and degrade them from the idea of being intellectual. Graff states, “We associate the educated life, the life of the mind, too narrowly and exclusively with subjects and texts that we consider inherently weighty and academic” (Graff 244). Schools need to channel the minds of street smart students and turn their work into something academic.

The goal of the usage of this fact is to show readers this common term does not reflect real traits of smart people and can be treated as an insult because of that. It is one of the few examples of Fridman’s appeals to readers’ logic. The essay is based on general data; the author mentioned schools and universities promote negative attitude to smart students: “Nerds are ostracized while athletes are idolized” (Fridman). But he did not use any statistical or science data to support his position. For example, Fridman could provide data about scholarships and other types of funding for sports and other activities.

He uses this pattern of logic in this piece by observing that every American college is most likely going to defend and state that a college education is one of the most important achievement in a person’s lifetime. A college education will help them earn more economically, it will help them become an informed citizen, and to be more curious about the world through knowledge. However, Delbanco also makes a point by saying that the college education system will only improve if it is fair toward all different kinds of people. The argument is convincing how college still matter, but it will only truly be the best once it throws away all of the discrimination and includes anyone who seeks to pursue an education. Delbanco shows that the arguments are convincing but have failed to consider how discrimination in democracy still

A respected author John Green questions, "Why is being a nerd bad? Saying I notice you 're a nerd is like saying, ‘Hey I knows that you 'd rather be intelligent than be stupid, that you 'd rather be thoughtful of them be vapid, that you believe that there things that matter more than the arrest record of Lindsay Lohan and why is that?” Many people who are passionate about their studies question the same thing. Leonid Fridman wrote a passage “America Needs its Nerds” in order to raise concern that our society does not value intelligence. Fridman uses compare and contrast to get his point across to the readers.

Gerald Graff’s argument on how educational systems are missing a great opportunity to tap into “street smarts” and focus them into a path of academic work is indeed convincing (Graff, 198). After all, anyone who’s been through the American educational system knows odds are often stacked against the “street smarts.” This is especially true in english classes, where one is often required to read boring and somewhat heartless books like, 1984, Beowulf, and the majority of Shakespeare’s classics. This is not to say these books are bad or shouldn’t be read during one’s schooling years, instead, the problem is one of apathy. In the article, “The War on Stupid People”, Freedman depicted the emphasis the society has placed on determining or facilitating human capacity has failed the less intelligent people. Freedman detailed his argument by providing evidence on how intelligence played a huge role in employment opportunities and academic performance. Moreover, he illustrated the issue of the economically disadvantaged/less intelligent, the current approach is flawed in the favoring the intelligent. He asserted with the evolution of the view of intelligence to the point as becoming a detrimental measure for human worth. He developed his main message by first established a neutral tone by providing statistical evidence of what a significant role intelligence has played,

In the article, “Anti-Intellectualism and the “Dumbing Down” of America” Ray Williams discusses the increasing trend of anti-intellectualism in American culture. There is an anti-intellectualism that exists in American culture that is the result of the unpopularity of being smart in High School, the lack of the importance of teachers in the U.S. compared to Japan and the effect of reality TV and pop culture. Williams indicates that one of the reasons that anti-intellectualism exists is that education in the United States is not as strong as it once was. Williams says, “After leading the world for decades in 24-34 year olds with university degrees, the U.S. is now in 12th place. The World Economic Forum ranked the U.S. at 52nd among 139 nations

What is it to be a Nerd? When asked to write about a sub culture that I was apart of several ideas went through my head. I could write about my belief system or my family’s own sub culture. But I realized that one subculture that I am apart of and one that I am constantly growing in is this nerd culture. This aspect of going to the comic book store with my brother and talking with the people that work there and seeing what they have to stay about the new story arc of Thor or Hawkeye.
