During my freshman and sophomore years of high school I took Spanish. It was a great experience to immerse myself in a different language and culture. I think every student in high school should take a language course because it makes for a better well rounded education. People who speak spanish as a main language are becoming more prominent in the United States, so it would be good to know at least the basics in case of an emergency. For example, I work at a Dunkin Donuts and sometimes someone who does not speak english with come in. Although I don’t know much Spanish, I can communicate with them better to some extent. Also, learning a language can help you better understand the culture. In my case, learning Spanish helped me understand the hispanic culture better. Although I believe Spanish helped me, it was very difficult to learn. …show more content…
It has been proven that it is much easier to learn a language when you are younger, but practice makes perfect. In order to do well in the class, I had to study frequently to help understand and remember words, which is normal. I think learning Spanish helped me understand the culture. In class, we learned about holidays they celebrated, such as, Cinco De Mayo and the Day of the Dead. This helped me understand what they valued. We also learned about the foods they would eat that are much different than our food. I believe that knowing about the culture made it easier to understand the actual language, but I also believe you need to know the language to understand the culture. Culture and language go hand and hand with each other and are both important to the learning process. All-in-all, there were many mistakes along the way, but I had a great experience learning a new language and I think everyone should at least try
Rodriguez argues people should be encouraged to speak another language, as it will help a lot in many outside-world situations. Language should be something that brings many people all around the world together. Although, learning languages in America could be slightly
American, Asian, Russian, Mexican; we all belong to an ethnic group. While some let their culture and ethnic background define them others allow it to shape your life. Being a Mexican-American I’ve had to simultaneously learn two languages at once; Spanish for when I’m at home or with family and English only at school and with friends. Growing up, my parents didn’t speak much English, so my sister and I had to step up as the family translator. Speaking Spanish is important to my family in many ways, not only is it a way for us to communicate with our family in Mexico, but also a reminder of where we come from.
Although some elements of Spanish were easier to master than others (e.g., learning the alphabet and
Spanish was my first language and neither one of my parents knew english. I would go to school and just listen and try to learn every little thing I could get my hands
Their language has many differences from English that amaze me. Society tends to put pressure on them to morph themselves into our society when we should be more open to finding common ground in communicating with them. If you learn their language, it could help unify the division there is between the two societies. This can set a great precedent for years and generations to
In Mexico, my home country, I was able to successfully communicate with others and complete assignments just by the utilizing the Spanish language, but that was not the case on this side of the border. I had to learn a whole new language that seemed to be far different from my natal
Some of the kids I observed only understood or spoke Spanish and some others only knew sign language. Since I only speak English I found it challenging but so rewarding
The more language knowledge significantly helps towards your career as you know. Bilinguals have the privilege of get their information from a wider variety of resources. Also, it has great educational benefit to kids. Many studies suggest that bilingual children tend to have a higher concentration and are better at working through distraction while doing their school work. Research has shown that bilinguals score higher on average on tests involving creative thinking or problem solving.
Culture is something that is lived every day - everyone shares their culture with others, at home, at work or in public places. To better communicate with specific groups of people, it is important to understand their values, beliefs and daily activities. Latino communities are groups that are made up of people of different nationalities, including many races. This community also includes people of different skin color, sizes, hair types and accents. Also, its culture includes a wide range of attitudes, beliefs, values and behaviors.
Spanish is a very beneficial language to learn. For one if you're bilingual you will have better job opportunities rather than if you were monolingual. Just last year CNN Money named bilingualism as one of the biggest skill you could have while looking for your job. Studies have also shown that a person that knows more than one language can earn between five percent and twenty percent more money per hour than those who can only speak one language because they can talk to spanish speakers while some other employees can not. So it would look great on your resume.
