Goals, what are goals? Goals, for some, are the driving force that help people get out of bed in the morning. For others, it’s the objective that keeps them focused on attaining something they may initially not have thought possible. For me, my goal to become a law enforcement officer, is what keeps me pushing forward. I push forward through the struggles, the obstacles that are in my way. Even now as I write this essay, I’m pushing myself to new limits and learning that I’m capable of doing more than I originally thought possible.
By digging deeper and researching what I have to accomplish to reach my goal of becoming a law enforcement officer, I have mapped out some of the specifics that are involved in this goal. First and foremost, this

So how am I going to do this? I will be doing this in two ways, numerically and measurably. I will quantify this goal with each completion of my classes towards my degree. Then I will measure my success and progress towards my goal by viewing my final grade each time I complete a class. The next thing I want to touch on is the achievability of my goal. I’m going to need some skills in order to full attain my goal. The most important skills that come to mind are policing skills, customer service skills and communication skills. All these skills I will be able to obtain through school and the police academy. To complete my goal and learn the skills necessary the environment should be conducive to the goal achievement. For me personally, I feel my environment is a perfect setting for my success. I have friends and family who are very supportive of my efforts. The effort I can currently and am willing to put in is sufficient to meeting my goal and its …show more content…
First, let’s start with relevancy. Is this goal in alignment with the overall strategy? Simply speaking, yes it is. My strategy is to gain some experience in law enforcement by working in the armed security field while I gain the knowledge I need through school. Now on to the time bound portion of this. What is the dead and is it achievable? The deadline I set for myself is within three years. The reason I say within three years and not just three years is, depending on where I am during my schooling I may opt to join and agency as I finish my schooling part time. Three years will give me plenty of time if I do decide to finish school first though before searching for a job. To be realistic, have I afforded myself the time necessary to complete my goal? With a resounding ‘yes’, I believe I have. I have taken into account the different scenarios that could and may pan out and at the end of each path three years is more than enough time, I feel, to accomplish what I have already set out to
Q1: Working Thesis The benefits of having an experienced mentor are invaluable to up in coming law enforcement professionals. Reference Saint Joseph’s University (n.d.) The Importance of Professional Writing Skills in Law Enforcement.
Through this new education requirement, it will produce a higher caliber of officers for departments to hire. My target population will be lawmakers, police officers and the public. My goal is to increase the education requirement for police officers. My objective to achieve this is through writing a policy within Pennsylvania that increases the education levels of police officers. Once the legislation is in place, the effects will begin at the consortium testing for individuals to become police officers.
My undergraduate studies, volunteer service, and employment have prepared me for study and future employment in criminal justice policy and administration. While studying criminology and criminal justice (CCJS) at the University of Maryland, College Park, I had the option of completing three additional CCJS courses that were not required for my major. I chose to take classes about drugs, race, and human trafficking because I believed they were critical criminal justice issues.
Policing in today’s society has been impacted through a multitude of influences including social, political, and economical to name a few. One factor that has, in more recent years, left its imprint within policing is race. Race, brings up the subtopics of ethics, corruption, accountability, and public views on policing. The following paper will discuss these subtopics to help further understand why and how race plays such a significant role in current day society and policing.
Police officers encounter dangerous situations on a daily basis with moment’s notice. The police subculture and members of it encourage fellow officers to be safe and come home after their shift at all cost. It is a brotherhood and they look out for each other all the time. It is considered a good day in the department when a call goes on without any trouble and all the officers return safe to their homes at the end of their shift. A moto of the police subculture that is said around the United States is, “It is better to be judged by twelve than carried by six,” (Herbert, 1998).
Candidate’s interest in public service: The decisions for those of us who have decided to dedicate their lives to public service have made commitments to this effect for many reasons. For me, the inspiration to do so began around eight o’clock in the morning of September 11, 2001. At the time that I began to experience this realization, I was not exactly sure as to what I could do to help improve the situation. However, I knew instinctively that it was time for me to do something worthy, be a part of something bigger than myself.
These challenges shaped the evolution of police departments, prompting them to adapt, strategize, and reform, constantly reshaping their approach to maintaining the peace. This historical panorama provides an invaluable context for understanding the police departments of today. The twin ideals of authority and service persist, albeit in more complex and plural societies. Today's law enforcement agencies grapple with the same challenges, albeit amplified by technological advances and societal changes.
Career and College Research paper What is a police officer? Most people in the world today think they know or have there own idea of what the job title is. The career I chose is police officer. The best local college for this job is Oklahoma state university/Oklahoma City (OSU/OKC) because of their reputation for graduating police officers in Oklahoma.
A career in policing requires an individual to meet a high standard for character and demonstrated behavior, in order to be developed into an effective officer. Succeeding in a police academy requires the candidate to display and apply integrity, a skill which must be developed before receiving admission. Integrity demonstrated through a police officer’s personal life, provides the foundation for a respected career. When presented with the opportunity to leverage a peace officer’s position for personal profit, an individual who has previously made selfless choices, is more reliable for operating within the law. Integrity as a term has the social implication of following ones beliefs, regardless of the opposition.
I have always been the type of person that receives an immense amount of gratification from helping others. I believe this goal is realistic due to my preconception of the career, love for helping others and experience. I've always loved helping other, so when I made it to middle school I joined an organization called builders club were we gave back to the community in various
Many young people aspire to become police officers. However, not everyone is fit for the role as police work is extremely demanding both physically and mentally. It is easy to learn about a subject from a book, but it is an entirely different matter to learn about a subject through real life experience. I hope to learn how to serve and protect while implementing the law correctly, especially in today’s world when the level of support for police officers is very low and the level of misconduct cases concerning the police are very high. It is not easy to know what to do in every situation, especially when some reactions are needed with very little or no time to think about. It is one thing to hear about a crime happening and the response that would be best to give, and another thing to need
"Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible", (Tony Robbins). This indicates striving to be successful even if it means failure. I plan on achieving my main goal so I can have a bright future in my career path. In order to achieve my life goal, I have already begun to work towards my goal and I plan to continue with an organized plan. Both short-term and long-term goals will help me set a better understanding of a successful future.
‘’Most officers enter law enforcement with minimal experience in the field or in handling the moral dilemmas that officers typically encounter. They learn how to perform their jobs, as well as recognize the organizational norms, values, and culture, from their peers and supervisors. While supervisors provide direct, formal reinforcement, officers’ peers offer friendship and informal rewards that, in many cases, hold greater influence than official recognition from the agency’’ (Fitch, 2011). Officers who come across situations where they are unsure what is morally and ethically best to do often turn to their peers for assurance and guidance. Good ethical behavior can easily be influenced by officers and those in law enforcement.
One of the challenges includes job responsibilities and expectations. The law enforcement community and officers may have varying responsibilities when it comes to their jobs, missions as well as professional cultures with varying expectations in regards to the definition of bullying, what constitutes suitable response4s to bullying and the ways it can be prevented. Law enforcement officers and school personnel’s more often operate according to various rules. For instance, school officials have a set of school rules and codes to enforce while law enforcement officers must at all times uphold the law. Another challenge is negative perception.
