It all started off in an abusive common law relationship between Angelique Lyn Lavallee and Kevin Rust. The couple had been together for a few years and the abuse Ms. Lavallee endured was physical, sexual, emotional and verbal. (Morris & Pilon, 1992) As a result of this abuse, Lavallee had made consecutive visits to the hospital. (Morris & Pilon, 1992) One summer night on August 31, 1986 the couple had hosted a party. Guest and mutual friends who had been invited to the party had suspected previous abuse from Rust and noticed some of Lavallee’s injuries. (Morris & Pilon, 1992) Afterward, a police officer and a doctor had pieced together the injuries on Lavallee’s body and noticed that the injuries she had; represented the defensive stance she took during the physical

Continuing, the officers went floor-to-floor searching for a nonexistent sniper. After the failed search, the policemen gathered the seven residents downstairs and lined them up. “Foreshadowing the gruesome ‘game’ to come,” writes Hersey, “the officers began to take people from the line, one by one, into rooms, for what might have been called—and might strictly not—questionings” (264). The officers began an aggressive interrogation that consisted of pistol whipping. One of the survivors, Lee Forsythe, told Hersey that the policeman, Robert Paille, “started questioning us, asking us where the gun was.”

Witnesses testified to seeing and hearing the abuse committed by Rust onto Lavallee prior times to the party as well as at the party that evening. Also, it is made very clear that this story takes place in the middle of a war, hence the fact that the gunshots can be heard. It is even stated at the end of the paragraph that a civil war is being waged. If there weren’t a war-like setting involved, the story would definitely not even be close to the same.
