How the Characteristics of Lady Capulet and Emily Strorm Affect Their Texts. Although written almost four hundred years apart, the characters Lady Capulet from the play Romeo and Juliet and Emily Strorm from the novel The Chrysalids, share numerous qualities that heavily influence the plot of their texts. The women affect the plot of their texts in similar manners. They create conflict with those around them through their personalities and flaws. Their qualities can be witnessed in our own lives as well. These shared and distinct characteristics are important factors that drive the plot of their texts. Families care for and protect each other, yet, the two women prove the contrary with their unloving and cold personalities. Emily’s unloving nature is evident when she refuses to aid her sister, Harriet, in receiving a certificate of normalcy. She berates Harriet for bringing a mutant into her home and abetting a concealment, two things that go against her morals as she believes heavily in the Waknukian faith. Harriet tells Emily that she had …show more content…
She resents Juliet as she would not consent to her marriage to Paris, which meant that her family could no longer achieve any further authority over the community. She could not view Juliet as a person but instead saw her as a tool for climbing the social ladder. She could not tolerate Juliet's disobedience. Juliet's emotions were irrelevant to her. This impacted how the play took place as Juliet is forced to devise a plan with Friar Laurence When the Capulet family discovered that Juliet would not marry Paris, they all abandoned her. Lady Capulet relied too heavily on the Nurse to give Juliet moral support. Emily is an even more narrow-minded person. She and the other Waknukians, do not see the value of change, leading them to be erased by the Sealanders. The mindsets of both women led to suffering as neither of them could overcome their views. The neglectful treatment of
Saying she can "An you be not, hang, beg, starve, die in the streets"(iii.v.193) if she decided to not marry paris. Which caused her to go to the friar and make the plan that ultimately got her and Romeo killed. If Juliet's parents allowed her to have a say in who she could marry, the story would have had a better outcome. There are arguments to my claim saying the capulets parents cared about peace in the city of verona. Like when lord capulet called off Tybalt when Romeo showed up at their party. "
First and foremost Lady Capulet was an overbearing mother to Juliet. She believed in things that Juliet did not and also forced a certain lifestyle onto her. Lady Capulet always viewed love differently than what Juliet did. The mother and daughter could never agree on anything either. “Ay, sir; but she will none, she gives you thanks.
Since Emily is so off from the world, this makes the understanding of what she is dealing with even harder. If she was more outspoken with the people of the town, rumors would have not grown about her, and caused even more
Romeo was reckless and did not love Juliet enough to save her. Lady Capulet had never truly been a mother to Juliet, their relationship was formal and respected, not kind and gentle. Lady Capulet thought she knew what was best for Juliet, she did not however care if Juliet was happy. She insisted Juliet to marry Paris “The valiant Paris seeks you for his love”(DBQ: Project, 2013), a man Juliet did not love.
At the beginning of the story, Juliet tried to listen to the everything her parents told her to do, including going to the party to meet her future possible husband, Count Paris. Juliet only wanted to be with Romeo, but instead of her father supporting her, he insulted her very harshly (3.5.160). Lord Capulet didn’t have the greatest reason to blow up with his daughter, especially since Juliet was only doing what she thought was right. Although Juliet only knew Romeo for a short amount of time, she thought their love was meant to be. She felt absolutely no connection with Paris and told her father she would much rather marry Romeo instead.
But we don’t know why Emily was the way she was or why she did what she did. Emily is like any woman or girl who feel insecure or not sure how she feels and is just confused on how to handle things going on in her life. Emily didn’t live the life like any other woman in her town. Being in the situation she was in was, what choices would you make? There are some things we can’t explain like why Emily kill Homer Barron and why she kept her father's corpse before letting anyone know that he was dead.
Capulet expects Juliet to be thankful for his ignorant decisions. He knows he is doing wrong, but continues to do so. Capulet’s inconsiderate actions break the bond between him and Juliet. Juliet develops a sense of urgency and starts to act without thinking about others. Capulet’s mentality is male-dominantly based; he won’t allow others to have a say in decisions, so consequently, his choices lead up to the
Although Juliet agrees to consider Paris because she feels it is her duty, this push from her mother which blatantly ignores her feelings likely causes her to feel betrayed and alone, contributing to her feeling she has no one without Romeo at the end of the play, which is what causes her to kill herself. Another instance of Lady Capulet betraying Juliet is when Capulet threatens to disown Juliet if she does not marry Paris, and Juliet looks to her mother for help. Lady Capulet refuses to speak to her, saying, “Speak not to me, for I’ll not speak a word. Do as thou wilt, for I have done with thee”(3.5.222-223). She essentially abandons her child at a time when Juliet feels entirely alone.
The Capulets are the main reason for the death of the two lovers and it can be seen in this quotation “soft, take me with you, take me with you, wife./How,will she none? Doth she not give us thanks?/ Is she not proud? Doth she not count her blest,/unworthy as she is,that we have wrought/so worthy a gentleman to be her bride?”(Shakespeare 3.5.141-145).This act of hostility that capulet shows when Juliet defies him displays to me that he sees Juliet as an object instead of a human whom he is able to control. This shock and disbelief that capulet conveys also solidifies to me the disregard capulet has for his daughter’s emotions.
That makes Juliet concerned because she likes Romeo. First, he tells Juliet to marry Paris which she doesn’t want to happen. This is found in Act 3 scene 5. Second, Lord Capulet rages at Juliet when he notices that she doesn’t want to marry Paris. He then tells Juliet that he will never see her again.
Juliet seeks to avoid these arrangements as a result of Lord Capulet's intention for her to wed Paris. While Paris thinks she has been sobbing for her dead cousin Tybalt, she has actually been grieving over Romeo's exile. Paris never even gets the chance to speak to his potential wife, which says a lot about Capulet's choice. He initially thinks she should wait because she is too young, but he eventually decides to be married without talking to Juliet. He disregards her emotions and even goes so far as to threaten to disown her.
Lady Capulet and the Nurse weren’t being understanding or supporting either, which caused her to go to Friar Lawrence. Lord Capulet wanted Juliet to marry Paris so the Capulet’s status would increase since now they would be part of
That connects to Juliet's identity, specifically as a woman in society. Her family believes Juliet's sole purpose is to marry into a good family. Here, Juliet's duty to her family conflicts with her duty as a woman, as she wishes to pursue love despite circumstances prohibiting her from doing so. Later in this scene, Lord Capulet expresses his anger at his daughter for defying his orders and gives her an ultimatum. He tells her that if she does not marry Paris, the Capulets will disown her,
She lived in an isolated world after her father’s death. Finally, she meets Homer; Homer was a man who knew what he wanted in life, and Miss Emily was not part of it. This drove Miss Emily to do the unthinkable, and she bought rat poison and killed Homer. Years passed, and no one knew that Miss Emily killed Homer and had him lying in the upstairs bed dead. It was intel her death that the towns people realized that miss Emily had become mentally ill with the death of her father and
Shakespeare once wrote in the words of Juliet from Romeo and Juliet, “I will not marry yet, and when I do, I swear it shall be Romeo, whom you know I hate, rather than Paris. ”(3.5.17-19) Juliet has just been notified that she will be binding her love in a marriage with Paris and she refuses. She is saying that instead of marrying Paris which will increase their wealth, status, and overall benefit the house of capulets she would rather marry Romeo, a Montague before she even held hands with Paris. In reality, she is already married to Romeo and is ignoring society's standards and opinions on the feud between Montagues and Capulets.
