The Ku Klux Klan a secret organization in the southern United States. During the past years, the KKK have changed dramatically. To only attacking African-Americans in the 1860s, and 1870s to attacking African-Americans, Catholics, Jews and immigrants in the 1920s. In today’s decade, the KKK sadly still exist, but the organization was in my opinion at its worst in the 1920s. The organizations were both the same at during the years because the organization had one primary focus, and it was to eliminate the people that they did not like. In both of these cases, it turned out to be African Americans. They both started because of a disagreeing to some sort of event that was happening at that time. In the both years that the KKK was “alive”, the organization seemed to grow with new members each time, but in the end the organization was “dead” toward the end with little people.
When the KKK had begun in the 1860s, the organization consisted of white terrorist that opposed of Reconstruction and they killed blacks, and their white supporters. Before the 1920s, William Joseph Simmons, tried to recreate the Klan but, the organization had only a few hundred members. Then in the early 1920s Henry Wesley Evans took control, he managed to have the Klan to be at as many as five million members. This new Klan was different than the old Klan because more people were involved in the organization. Not only was there a Ku Klux Klan, there was also WKKK which stood for Women Ku Klux Klan. The Ku Klux Klan, with its long history of violence, is the most infamous and oldest of American hate groups. Although black Americans have typically been the Klan's primary target, it also has attacked Jews, immigrants, gays and lesbians and, until recently, Catholics. The Ku Klux Klan, they believed, they were protecting in Traditional American values. They treated blacks by Lynched, raped and beat blacks for petty crimes. The Klan was not only anti-black but also took a stand against Roman Catholics, Jews, foreigners and organized labor.
The new Klan was against anyone who was not an American Native. This group was based near Atlanta, however there was a large group of the Klan in New Jersey. The new Klan was a sign that the people of the United States were sensing a change in culture and they were not comfortable with it. Therefore they decided to take it upon themselves to make the change stop. In 1924 it was reported that there were four million members in the new Klan.
Originally designed as a club for ex-Confederate soldiers, the KKK became a “vehicle for Southern white underground resistance to Radical Reconstruction” (The Editors of). Members would attack recently freed slaves in an attempt to assert white superiority over blacks. Members could be found spread throughout the southern United States, including in levels of state and local government (The Editors of). The KKK was a group of white southerners who did not want the policies establishing political and economic equality for blacks to be successful. The KKK engaged in underground campaigns of intimidation and violence directed at Republican leaders, both white and black. One of the most notorious areas of the Klan was South Carolina. In January 1871, five hundred masked men attacked a Union county jail and lynched eight black prisoners. Acts like these would go “unnoticed” by officials and other influential citizens in the area because of the fear of how the Klan would retaliate and also by the lack of care for what the Klan was doing.
The KKK was a group of white planters, merchants, and Democratic politicians. In Colfax, Louisiana, in 1873, armed whites assaulted this town with a small cannon. Hundreds of formers slaves were murdered, along with fifty members of a black militia, even after they surrendered. This was their bloodiest attack. The KKK was a racist group that strongly hated blacks and anyone who helped or supported them. The KKK thought that the U.S was better off without blacks and that blacks were not equal to whites. They formed a klan that all had this belief and hung blacks, burned down schools that blacks were getting a little education in, and many other stuff to show their hate. The KKK also burned a cross to intimidate blacks and others who supported blacks. It was very hard for a black to be elected for something.
The Klu Klux Klan was a terrorist clan that consisted of the white elite or white plantation owners. This terrorist group started in 1865 and was a hate group for many different communities. The KKK was considered as a secret society who did their own form of oppression to the black community. Thankfully the government stepped in and the 3 enforcement acts was enforced. The 3 enforcement acts restricted the klan which was a huge success.
Almost every American state had some type of KKK group and all had the same beliefs as what was being preached by their leadership. Over the years the groups have been responsible for not only lynching’s and intimidation but also increasing their tactics of terror by using explosives to kill or maim colored people and those who supported or fought for their rights.
They used modern advertising method to gain 5 million members by 1925. The KKK in this time period were not against only African Americans, but also Catholics, Jews, foreigners, and suspected Communists, due to the Red Scare. They used cruel punishments as tactics to intimidate anybody deemed as “un-American”. From whipping, tar and feathering, and even hanging, the KKK was ruthless.
The Ku Klux Klan first emerged in Pulaski, Tennessee following the Civil War. As we know today, the mere mention of the Klan triggers fear as the KKK is known for its various tactics of violence that came in the form if lynchings, murders, and mutilations. Following their emergence, the KKK were quickly symbolized and portrayed as the protectors of the South, following the defeat of the Southern states in the Civil War and the beginning of the period of Reconstruction by the federal government (Gurr, 1989, p. 132). During the 1920s, the KKK achieved its greatest political success and growth outside of the South. During this period, the membership of the Klan heavily expanded to the states of Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Oregon, to which the KKK obtained two to two and one-half million members at its apex.
The Ku Klux Klan or KKK has created centuries of fear. They originated in Pulaski, Tennessee. The famous hate group was out to re establish white supremacy. The KKK has influenced local governments and people in power. It has also had an impact on American people and specifically black minorities.
