In the beginning, many thought that the American Civil War would be very short and last only two months. They were wrong, it started in the spring of 1861 and ended in the spring of 1865 (Badertscher 7). Many people thought the Civil War was about slavery, this was incorrect. The reason the South favored states ' rights was because of popular sovereignty (Himan). This allowed states to choose if they wanted slavery or to be a free state. When Lincoln was elected, many Southerners feared that he would abolish slavery. The first state that broke away was South Carolina, then many other states followed. Eventually, it led to the Union (the North) and the CSA. At first the war was evenly fought, but eventually the Union started to gain an advantage …show more content…

When they returned, they had to “swallow the dog” (Padrusch). “Swallowing the dog” meant that for the people who opposed the United States were forced to say the United States oath or they would be shot. This was difficult for many southerners. One night, the six men were at a table, they decided to make a group called the KKK. The KKK was originally founded in 1866 and is still active today. During the mid 19th century, the KKK was known for their night rides. They rode at night and killed whoever opposed their beliefs were slaughtered. During America’s rebuilding stage, the KKK killed 300 people in Tennessee. They also spread into Arkansas and killed many others there. Terror wasn’t just after the Civil War it is also in today. Many people are affected by it. For the many who know it can put fear in a person’s mind, once they know fear they try to avoid it. That will not work if US citizens avoid the threat of terrorism we are doomed! We have to open our eyes and look at the bigger picture, that there is a chance that you can die every day, a person can see whatever they want in a tv, but when they actually experience they are mind blown. The Civil war started when the Southern states seceded by the Union. “Apprehension seem to exist among the people of the Southern States. The war still continued even though Lincoln believed there should not be any enemies against anyone in the United States. Glory for the private soldiers were different for the officers.
Uncompromising differences between the South (Confederacy) and the North (Union) created a civil war that lasted five years. During this war, Abraham Lincoln was president. His election led to the secession of many Southern states. After refusing to recognize the Confederacy as its own nation, the American Civil War commenced in 1861. The three main causes of the Civil War between the North and the South were industrial and agricultural economies, politics, and slavery.

The Civil War was fought during 1861 through 1865 between the Southern and Northern parts of the United States. The North, or the Union, wanted to abolish slavery, but the South, called the Confederates, wanted to keep slavery as well as secede from the Union. This war started at Fort Sumter and was won by the North. Hostility between the North and South grew noticeably after the year of the Missouri Compromise, 1820 (“Civil War” 1). In 1852, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, a book about slave life, became the second best-selling book in 19th Century America, behind the Bible, and opened the eyes of Northerners.
Founded during the Reconstruction Era (1865-1877), The Ku Klux Klan was an extremist hate group that violently challenged social and political laws which protected certain minority groups. The Klan’s deliberate use of terror and violence reflected the passion held for a racial hierarchy, with whites at the top of the social structure. The presence of KKK was seen not only during the Reconstruction Era, but also during the post–World War I era (1920s). There are distinct similarities and differences that define the motives of the 1860s Klan and the reincarnated 1920s Klan; however, I believe these characteristics hide the true representation of the intolerance of American citizens.
On April 12, 1861, a brutal war broke out between the north and the south called the Civil War. Some say the north, or Union, went to war to abolish slavery, but the south, or Confederates, went to war for states’ rights. Abraham Lincoln, who was president at the time, called the nation “a house divided” because the north and south did not agree. Four long years later, the Union won the victory on May 9, 1865.
The Ku Klux Klan first emerged in Pulaski, Tennessee following the Civil War. As we know today, the mere mention of the Klan triggers fear as the KKK is known for its various tactics of violence that came in the form if lynchings, murders, and mutilations. Following their emergence, the KKK were quickly symbolized and portrayed as the protectors of the South, following the defeat of the Southern states in the Civil War and the beginning of the period of Reconstruction by the federal government (Gurr, 1989, p. 132). During the 1920s, the KKK achieved its greatest political success and growth outside of the South. During this period, the membership of the Klan heavily expanded to the states of Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Oregon, to which the KKK obtained two to two and one-half million members at its apex.
The Civil War was a monumental bloodshed, which was fought between the United States of America and the Confederate States, from 1861 to 1865. The primary cause of the war was the Southern states' desire to preserve the institution of slavery, which did not please the beliefs of the North. At the beginning of the Civil War, twenty-two million people lived in the North and 9 million people, which included four million of whom were slaves, lived in the South. The North, led by President Abraham Lincoln and his trusted generals, had more money, more factories, more horses, more railroads, and more food than the south. These advantages made the United States much more powerful than the Confederate States, which ultimately led to Northern victory.
